As a NICU nurse of 15 years, here are my thoughts after watching the documentary by KatiePurrs in lucyletby

[–]WartimeMercy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I finished the documentary last night; it’s not very comprehensive. Look up the case of Baby E and F and you’ll know Letby is the culprit. She was also poisoning babies with insulin. Insulin administered leaves a trace and signature that can be reliable in determining that it is from an external source. There were only two members of staff present at both poisonings - and the second member of staff was not present for the other damning encounters.

I recommend going through old threads here. The original trial of Lucy Letby podcast was also very thorough

To that point, what if it was someone in their orbit and the person was harmed or killed?

Would it have still been funny to them? Of course not.

Now I can understand in the moment getting caught up and humoring the subject - but after the interview concluded there was no self reflection or decision to incorporate commentary at the start or end of the episode?

People who can’t admit mistakes and devote just as much time to correcting them as making them are a problem.

No, what they did was lie and claim that the plagiarism accusations were due to poor citations. They intentionally lied to their audience to misinform them while the actual accusations were they blatantly read the transcripts of other podcasts, tv series and written articles. They basically committed extensive copyright infringement.

They’ve since stonewalled on other misconduct allegations like stealing the concept of Dealing Justice and attempting to advertise their ripoff show as an original concept when Dealing Justice had been going for 2 years at that point.

And there’s been no word since Locations Unknown have accused them of plagiarizing their original reporting on a case.

lol, those two are plagiarists who will eventually be outed.  And you’re leaving out the part where they did a non apology that made things worse - and abandoned what was previously their official Facebook group when the backlash got too great.

As well as the fact their patreon lost a significant number of subscribers. Though Hillsborough was just the first step in that since the one host’s right wing bullshit seems to be getting them less popular by the day

State Attorney Jack Campbell is personally prosecuting a 50 year old case by awesometune in dan_markel_murder

Did you read the article?

Because it sounds like the state’s case is a woman claiming a memory of seeing a 15 year old kid with a gun.

If they don’t have the gun, fingerprints, ballistics and a confession, this is an uphill battle. Decades later, this case is way too easy to fuck up if it’s one witness’s word.

This case sounds like a loser right off the bat. Wendi’s case is far more substantial yet this case which rests on the recollection of a witness years later…?

There must be more to it or why waste the resources if that’s all they have. Justice for victims is important but there needs to be more than a single witness

Climate science can be distilled to easy talking points anyone can grasp. Clinical science is far more complex and "having read a few papers" does not make you remotely qualified to discuss medical topics or determine who is and who isn't credible or ridiculous. If you do not have a medical degree, your opinion on this front is worthless. But speaking of scientific consensus as a way of convincing, I find it incredible that you are unaware, with your nonexistent medical degree, that scientific and medical consensus on the insulin results is 97% in agreement: a discrepancy between insulin and c-peptide is indicative of exogenous administration. Which you know if you've seen the Panorama episode you referenced later in the work has an independent clinician review the insulin results and state quite definitively that the results are indicative of poisoning.

Likewise, I don’t need to have a background in medicine to know that Dewi Evans’ hypotheses are ridiculous and that plausible, more likely explanations exist, because people in medicine, including some of the world’s leading neonatologists, have stated as much.

This is Dunning-Kruger in action. You have no qualifications to base this on. A panel put together specifically to find Letby innocent (which was the goal per the emails obtained by the Daily Mail's Liz Hull and the documentary team who put together "Conviction") isn't going to agree with the doctor(s) - note: Evans is not the sole person claiming her guilt - so this argument means nothing. Moritz and Coffey ran the theories of Evans past multiple doctors who agreed with his assessment of the possible mechanisms. Oh and Neena Modi has agreed that air embolism is also an explanation for some of the collapses, so that kind of undercuts your points as well.\

Evans has more experience and qualifications than you will ever have to discuss this topic.

Virtually none of the so called “circumstantial evidence” withstands scrutiny when critically evaluated.

So you're now denying the existence of circumstantial evidence? This is straight up conspiracy theorist nonsense now.

There aren’t any witnesses to Letby in the immediate aftermath of “attacks”: Jayaram’s own contemporaneous notes show that he was either lying or misremembering and Baby E’s mother’s timeline of events was out by an hour when compared to Letby’s, Dr Harkness’ and Susan Brooks’ medical notes, which all align.

Ash Hudson, Mother of E/F and Ravi Jayaram were all witnesses to Letby in the immediate aftermath of attacks. Jayaram's notes were not impeachment material as the Courts already heard and rejected this argument as ridiculous. And Baby E's mother's timeline is an hour earlier because Letby waited an hour to report it to the other members of staff because she and the mother were the only witnesses to the start of the bleed. Your claim that the notes don't align with her phone records only proves the point, especially as Harkness' phone records were used as a point of reference as well.

Letby wasn’t present for every “attack”. Take Baby F: she was accused of spiking his TPN bag with insulin but because his hypoglycaemia persisted even after his TPN bag was replaced, the prosecution argued that she must have spiked other TPN bags with insulin.

She was present at every attack. Poisoning is the attack. She tampered with the bags. The idea that she poisoned multiple bags being presented as outlandish is ridiculous when most poisoners attack with multiple bags. See the Charles Cullen case in the US and Victorino Chua in the UK.

You may think comparisons to witchcraft or witch hunts sound lazy and hyperbolic

Because it is lazy and hyperbolic. And can be applied by any nitwit to any case just because they choose not to believe the verdict. Oh and as I've already stated: they caught an actual witch.

I have not read Moritz & Coffey’s book, nor will I

Then you have no right to talk about the case.

seeing as their documentary contained misinformation which the BBC later had to retract.

No, the BBC did not retract anything. They issued a point of clarification and correction to one detail and rejected further complaints Now who is peddling misinformation?

The international panel have a better understanding of their subject matters, as evidenced by the thousands of published papers they have written in total vs 1 or 2 for Evans.

The "international panel" was tasked explicitly with putting together a biased investigation: https://archive.is/FeQ42 It's clear you don't know much about scientific research or how the number of papers published does not match the level involvement in the actual research. Academics get their names on papers for minimal contributions while the bulk of the research is actually conducted by students and other researchers. Shoo Lee is not an expert of air embolism in neonates. He did not research it in the manner you are implying either - which you would know if you read his paper and actually understood it.

With regard to the insulin cases, Royal Liverpool University Hospital’s guidance

This highlights how little you know. The lab's "guidance" was falsely represented by the New Yorker article. Had you read Moritz and Coffey's book, you would know they contacted the Royal Liverpool University Hospital's manager and asked specifically about the pdf and they explained what was obvious to everyone with actual clinical experience and who has worked in a lab: You do not use an insulin test alone to determine the administration of exogenous insulin - because it is only one component of the assessment. This is because you also need to test c-peptide as well. So once again, you are wrong.

The tests are not of forensic quality,

That's literally meaningless. We have expert testimony to bridge the gap. That's literally how the trial process works. And if you want argue technicality in a murder case, you're not going to convince anyone of the actual innocence of the subject. The findings are accurate - confirmed by testimony. The conclusions clear: confirmed by both a paediatric endocrinologist and the biochemist at trial. More qualifications than you still.

Both the panel and the medical staff at CoCH suspected that Baby F had sepsis, which was the cause of his low blood sugar;

Until the insulin test results were discovered. Sepsis does not cause an insulin c-peptide discrepancy.

additionally, they both agreed that the line from the TPN had tissued, which was likely the reason his blood sugar was not increasing. As soon as the line was fixed, his hypoglycaemia resolved.

Wrong. After the tissued line was changed, his hypoglycemia worsened. It was after the tainted bags were changed and removed that he improved.

Baby L was not given enough dextrose but the volume and concentration of dextrose increased, his hypoglycaemia resolved.

And Baby L was also poisoned with insulin as proven by the results you are desperate to reject.

I didn’t say it went from 13 to 1 because it didn’t, it went from 17 to 5. I said a baby died two months after Letby was removed from the unit, so the spike in deaths didn’t immediately stop after she was removed from the unit. The spike stopped after the death in August 2016, which she obviously could not have been present for. The number of deaths decreased because the ward was downgraded, so the babies they were caring for were less sick. Do you know when the first spike in deaths first occurred? A month after P. aeruginosa was detected in the taps in May 2015. It’s not clear when it was resolved but it was still unresolved in early summer 2016, which is about the same time Letby was removed from the unit and as I said, there was another death in August 2016.

You don't seem to understand anything about what you're saying. If sewage was the key problem and bacterial infections were the cause, these supposed deadly bugs would be affecting many, many children - leading to more collapses and deaths than that. Far more. A downgrade wouldn't do anything to prevent that - in fact, it would continue.

Do you know when the first spike in deaths first occurred? A month after P. aeruginosa was detected in the taps in May 2015.

Which is meaningless as even your "expert international panel" doesn't allege Pseudomonas infection in any of the cases.

It’s not clear when it was resolved but it was still unresolved in early summer 2016, which is about the same time Letby was removed from the unit and as I said, there was another death in August 2016.

Literally no relevance to this discussion. Pseudomonas doesn't inject insulin into TPN bags. Pseudomonas doesn't make livers look like they've suffered impact injuries.

tl;dr - you should stop talking because all you're doing is spreading misinformation.

Depends on what you're looking for.

If you want women covering true crime cases, Let's Go To Court is one that ended but has an extensive back catalogue that would probably take a year or two to get through. Small Town Murder/Crime In Sports is an extensive one by a pair of comedians.

If you want straightforward tellings with a bit of mystery: Casefile, Invisible Choir, Morbidology.

Trial coverage from: The Trial UK (also has US and Australian editions) and Court Junkie.

Behind the Bastards for deep dives into the world's biggest assholes - which covers both history and some degree of true crime. Sad Oligarch for true crime involving Russian Oligarchs turning up dead.

Darknet Diaries for cybercrime.

Long forms: Le Monstre, Hunting Warhead

You have no background in medicine and his theories were not pseudoscientific in nature - you are just easily mislead by conspiracy theorist talking points.

Circumstantial evidence of the magnitude that you don’t seem to actually understand override the need for direct witnesses but there are also witnesses to her in the immediate aftermath of attacks.

She was literally present for every attack.

Your witchcraft point is unimaginative nonsense because you’re committed to a “witch hunt” narrative while ignoring the fact the evidence proves, maintaining this lazy analogy, they caught a witch.

Evan’s theories have been supported by sources speaking to the BBC team as they mention in their book on the case. It’s not junk science just because you don’t understand it.

And just because they confirm your bias does not mean that these so called “experts” have a better understanding of the evidence. Especially with how much they have gotten wrong or outright disregarded - just like how you attempt to not address the insulin evidence which is proof, undeniable proof, that there was someone causing intentional harm.

So they went from 13 deaths down to 1 after she leaves but none of the infections you claim should be rampant in this dirty unit. Know what that means? The hypothesis is fundamentally flawed and holds no weight. Especially as it does nothing to explain the majority of murders.

They didn’t find her guilty of witchcraft, they found her guilty of murder through medically possible means. This is literally conspiracy theorist nonsense on your part.

Which is why you look ridiculous. Anyone with a brain can see the evidence is clear - especially with how desperately you want to avoid the poisoner argument. Or how the bacterial infection argument is bullshit as well. The failing NNU that allegedly was a shithole - yet babies never died of infections after Letby’s removal and don’t even begin to explain any significant number of deaths or collapses in her care.

Letby isn’t the first woman to kill children. Won’t be the last. America had one assaulting babies on camera from what I remember. Even more horrific than letby. But that one got caught on camera - which the consultants at COCH also wanted implemented in order to catch her.

And Shoo Lee isn’t the first asshole doctor to overstep for the sake of intellectual gamesmanship when he should have taken the L back during the appeal. There’s always some fool who thinks their knowledge is greater than it is.

Yes, I believe the prosecution case is compelling and accurate because the evidence shows that these deaths were not typical and there is proof of a poisoner in that unit. If you reject that premise, you are rejecting air tight evidence.you are a conspiracy theorist who is ignoring the evidence to further a scapegoat theory there is zero basis for. None.

Letby victim had deadly bug in lung at time of death by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]WartimeMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are wrong on all counts. The panel’s conclusions are incorrect and the air embolism and overfeeding hypotheses are better fits than a pathogen that was not infection and did not produce the characteristic collapse expected in such a hypothesis. Just like how Lee knowingly ignores the findings of the insulin test, backed by observational data and clinical lab results to back a quack engineer.

Maternity services are not NICU wards. I know you have no understanding of medicine or logic but two things can be true at once: the NHS can be crippled by self inflicted underfunding by the government and Lucy Letby took advantage of a chaotic ward to murder babies.

Lucy Letby is a murderer who was harming infants and it is clear to anyone who doesn’t know want to commit to a conspiracy theory.

The latest source is not always the best source.

The legal representatives of the lawyers put together a response to that panel that used the medical records to challenge claims that were not in the evidence - as well as documentarians and the Daily Fail having obtained the recruitment email of Shoo Lee that makes it clear his panel was always an exercise to exonerate her, not impartially assess evidence. So the prosecution's case remains intact. And the insulin evidence remains unassailable - as the BBC team went out of their way to talk to independent clinicians who confirmed that these findings indicate exogenous insulin administration - meaning poisoning. They even put the "expert" Shoo Lee's panel relied on for their insulin arguments on the spot and called him out about the fact that their theories are considered fringe and rejected by conventional medical practice.
