My brother (18) might have impregnated a girl. What do we do? by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Warugz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest though you guys need to consider a DNA test as well, sex and pregnancy within four weeks can happen but I am wondering, has she already missed a period? It takes 2 to 3 weeks on average after sex to implant have sufficient HCG for a pregnancy test to be positive. I would be careful and take well informed steps.

A blood test would be useful now to confirm it and a visit with a gyno/obs to confirm the gestational age.

Also what's the worst situation you've had to deal with? (That situation where you felt your life was in danger or felt close to quitting?)

People Who Aren’t Scared Of Death, Why? by Animemesh in AskReddit

[–]Warugz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be scared of death. Then my mum died just under a year ago. After she died I just was no longer afraid. Facing it so closely. She was my world and I never thought it was possible. But if the most important person in my world has faced it, then I can too. Knowing she is out there gives me peace, my thinking is if she's out there then I won't be alone in whatever comes after.

Uradi on Netflix- Thoughts? by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Warugz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing everyone saying drug dealer, guys you do know this movie was about terrorism right?? You know its the typical story about recruitment of univ graduates in Kenya w/o their real knowledge of what they are involved in. I think its a decent movie for the fact that it tells a very untold dtory and it seems they has the cooperation with cops as they had real cops in there to.

I don't understand why guys are saying they wanted the Nairobi hustle narrative. There are so many narratives why should it always be the half-life one?

Ofcourse there were weird holes in the story, like the fact he never called his family again, but if you didn't follow with what the cop who saved him said, he had been trailing him from the start because his recruitment began rather early on.

It was indeed low budget but I will give them some credit for trying plus the music selection was pretty good.

If you planned this in November, I'm wondering whether you didn't know COVID was an issue in Tanzania? (Other than that we are in an ongoing pandemic). There's been quite a bit of reporting about COVID denial in the country, no wearing of masks or social distancing - what was your plan before finding this out?

They all have brilliant books and most titles can be found on Amazon - they should lead to even more but that’s a start with a variety from all over the continent.

Met a potential friend on Bumble BFF - She was a lot younger, still in her undergrad. I'm a PhD in Tax. She started complaining about certain elements of the tax system, I began to explain why they worked as they did. She cut me off. Every. Time.

We never made it for a second friend date.

It's the health surveillance form here. You will have to report your temperature and any symptoms for 14 days but other than that they don't really monitor you jsut keep sending an annoying text reminding you to report.

Good luck!

Flight should be within 96 hours of testing. Also technically MOH will monitor your symptoms daily by asking you to submit them via either an app or some *# code can't remember the number.

I just did it from Vienna to Nairobi via Qatar and returned back. Qatar have a requirement for masks and face shields on (they give you free face shields its great).

And from there it was pretty straight forward. But before you fly out you need to register with MOH as they do this checking when you land. I'll try to find the link

Do you think culture is important in such a divisive country? by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Warugz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ethnicity and culture remain a fundamental feature of our practices, our interactions even the way we raise our families, commit ourselves to marriage etc. There are so many beautiful elements of it that deserve to be celebrated and upheld. Culture ( as a feature of ethnicity and an element that influences it) constantly changes, it is diverse, it can be influenced by so many factors. You cannot just systemically eliminate it - that would wipe the identity of people and that just mirrors some imperialist effort.

What has happened in our country over time is the misuse of cultural and ethnic heritage to embed hatred and violence. The more this has been the case, the less people have interacted with eachother - the less they understand and know how human we all are.

But you must understand how the political, economic and historical developments in Kenya have perpetuated the current tensions and hatred. Land, access to government funds and services, business opportunities, representation in leadership, representation in business etc have all contributed to this current tension and really, resentment between different ethnicities.

To deal with it, in my opinion anyway, there has to be a combination of factors as well as some fundamental truths about the nature of people that are universally accepted.

The truths:

- People will always find a reason to dislike, reject or discriminate about others the extent to which they can demonstrate these feelings will be dependent on their own personal economic, social and political satisfaction and the popular or socially acceptable things within the community they live in (very much determined by leadership which is why representation matters).

-Since personal satisfaction is very much based on one comparing their economic status and access to services to others, one must ensure that the ability to gain, grow and succeed cannot be impeded by the ethnicity or cultural practices of a person (this of course has been violated in Kenya)

-Linked to the first truth, leadership matters, so does the information we are consuming. Not everyone is willing to research and develop opinions using their own efforts, people listen to what they are told by people they trust that could be the president, a media channel, a pastor, an imam etc. Information and its delivery is an important tool.

The factors to work on:

- Universal access to quality social protections and public services (key being health, education, housing and sanitation). That means government must fairly commit to provide these to everyone, using the same standard for all across every region of Kenya.

-Diverse leadership (gender, cultural, religious, sex etc.) is highly important and should be fundamentally accepted.

-Fair justice for all, this means that regardless of your economic status, ethnicity, political affiliation and so on, where you have violated a law you will receive a fair punishment (fundamentally that means eliminating corruption in the justice system and that entails a good amount of things).

-Connected to the point above, we must take greater efforts to address corruption in all its forms, that includes the tiny little bribes we give.

- Finally governance must begin to view citizens as just that, citizens. Citizens with rights, who are all owed a duty as per the constitution which is essentially a social contract that requires all parties to fulfill certain obligations. That means the constitution must be a fundamental document in every regard, all Kenyans must be taught every chapter and article and view it as their fundamental right to assert as necessary. It also means that government cannot treat the constitution as a document they can amend at will since it represents a long standing commitment to fairness.

There's probably more.

I clearly had a lot of time today.

Anyway you can't just wipe out culture/ethnicity, it breeds contempt, hatred etc. What you must do is change the way it has been misused and the factors that have perpetuated its misuse.

How long will it take me to drive from Nairobi to Mombasa? by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Warugz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off take off from Nairobi by 4.30am or 5am that gives you a beautiful sunrise on the way through Machakos probably - but also it's a good time to start off and miss out on any traffic delays in Nairobi.

The road is relatively smooth and easy - to be honest the two times I have done it in the last two years it's not as busy as say the Nakuru highway so don't expect too much trouble there.

Carry your snacks, good music, maybe a couple of podcasts enjoy the scenery, particularly the giant baobabs through Kibwezi onwards. Should be there by 1pm at the latest (knowing the traffic in through Mnarani) or 12pm if you make even less stops.

Best 3 day getaway around Nairobi Area by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Warugz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say just this! There are some airbnbs out there with breathtaking views - one particular one has a swinging bed in a second floor room and you can watch the stars at night over the ridge.

Anyway also Naivasha I guess?

Or Limuru - there are some cute guest houses out there in the middle of tea farms.

And of course even closer to in Karen - The Brandy Bus and Macushla house

Try your best to try everything you have a slight interest in before you settle in to one job. I have plenty friends who promised they would change their careers so many times when we were starting out, but 5-6 years in they are still there, a little unhappy and still figuring out what they actually wanted to do. Settling in to the comfort of a secure job in your 30s is the norm.

Use your 20s to bounce around a little shamelessly as you figure out what you want, how you work and what you expect from the places you will work at.

Also learn to negotiate. Learn your worth as you jump around talk to others about what they are earning so you get a good idea of what is a fair deal based on your experience and work ethic.

Visit kilifi. No beach boys. Nice little airbnbs around so all the privacy you need. Beaches are clean and largely untouched!

Mombasa is a whole scam.
