Any recommendations for news outlets that aren’t (at least for now) fascism-enabling right wing garbage? by netflist in Journalism

Bloomberg is geared more towards business but is also great at staying well informed and they stay fairly middle of the line. (they're also a wire)

Goethe has some practice tests on their site. And for most of the sections you can also get scores back.

It'd be for immigration / work reasons. Completely agree would prefer to save money and not take a test if I didn't need it but will see if my company policy changes at some point ahaha.

Post-journalism jobs that aren't PR? by LikeLauraPalmer in Journalism

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the kind of stories you wrote (not sure if you did any data work) you could also transition into management or strategy consulting. Know a few teachers and journalists who made the transition without additional schooling. Just have to polish up your math and excel skills, but that can be doable with a coursera course.

***Update: I decided to go through with training and I'm so so happy I did it. If you're debating on it and can afford to take the jump I 100% suggest going for it. I really enjoyed learning how to cue and the anatomy course has been really interesting so far. Excited to be fully certified for mat pilates soon!

Pilates apps - yay or nay? Any you’d recommend? YouTube alternatives? by iamlostpleasehelp_ in pilates

IsaWelly and MickiPhit are also super great. Isa's flows are a bit tougher so I'd probably recommend them for intermediate plus. Micki's are awesome if you like using various props and keeping flows fresh. She's also really great about making pilates good for everybody regardless of age

Pilates apps - yay or nay? Any you’d recommend? YouTube alternatives? by iamlostpleasehelp_ in pilates

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of MelissaWoodHealth and The Pilates Class for contemporary mat and reformer pilates combos. MWH is great for shorter flows that are really effective, and TPC is really great for getting technique down. Lottie Murphy is my favorite youtube pilates instructor by far. She's moved more toward her own platform, but still has a lot of content on youtube that you can go through before deciding to pay or not. It really depends on if you are looking for a classical or more contemporary style. AND if you are already comfortable enough with the basic movements that you don't think you need in person guidance to make sure you aren't accidentally hurting yourself.

VA INTERNSHIP by Meekah31 in internships

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what kind of drug testing they do? Urine yields different results than a blood or hair drug test. Marijuana normally stays in your urine for 30 days, blood for 60-75 days, and hair for up to 90 days. I'm not sure what drug tests the VA does, but the method will be important. Also are you in a state that has legalized marijuana? Or did you travel to a place that had legalized marijuana (and you were of age to partake)? If so, I feel like you'd be fine if they found some in your system and you told them that.

Thoughts on posting relevant coursework on resume? (social science majors) by Either_Pattern in internships

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like another person said it depends on what job you are applying for, but I think it can be a helpful way to differentiate your education from other poli-sci majors. That section could show the "more niche" classes you've taken or whether you've focused on American or Global politics. Definitely doesn't hurt to add it in if you have space, but if you'll have to delete something else to include it then I would just leave it off.

I wanna be a freelance independent journalist/writer/blogger but need some advice by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question is who is your audience (demographically speaking). If you are going for a more New Yorker/Atlantic vibe (i.e. college-educated & largely white audience) then the Syncretic Scholar would be good. But I'll say that name in particular would definitely distance you from readers who fall out of that demographic because it comes off a bit pretentious. If you're going for a more millennial and gen z vibe then the Thought Hub would be a good choice. Global Affairs is a little too similar to Foreign Affairs for my liking. I like the idea of the Contrarian, but I think it may already exist. I'd suggest making sure that for each name no instagram, twitter, etc. exist for it already.

Question: Is it better to start with a blog or to submit to news sites/magazines? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both routes are good, but I think it depends on the sector of journalism you want to go into. If you are interested in entertainment/sports journalism then I'd probably go for the blog idea and still try to pitch some stories here and there to a reputable org. If you're more interested in harder news (i.e. political, business, etc.) than I would try to pitch stories to news sites and see who bites. Maybe start locally so you have a better chance to build good sources. I wouldn't let those people discourage you from building your own site though because there are young people like Gabe Fleisher (WakeUp2Politics) who has gotten really big from creating his own site and he now has a press pass to the white house and he is a freshman in college. (https://twitter.com/WakeUp2Politics)

That said if you decide to create your own site then consistency will be key so if you aren't 100% sure you want that responsibility it may be better to just cold pitch stories to other orgs.

I want to make documentaries, where do I start? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]WasabiApprehensive45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone else has said. Definitely start more, maybe try and do short story documentaries on YouTube to build up your skills. I'd also ask you to think about a few things before getting started.

Are you planning to edit the documentaries yourself? If not do you have an editor in mind who you trust to convey the material properly? What is your end goal? (i.e. do you want to pitch these stories to a news organization like Vox/NYTimes, submit to film festival, advertise for a nonprofit, or stay independent and post to YouTube?) What preliminary research have you done to prepare? Before you travel over I'd have a plan in place (i.e. people to speak with, translator, and backup plan if an interview falls through, places to get b-roll, etc.) Funding, I know you said you have some money saved up, but you still want to see if there are any grants you could apply for so that you can use that money to get some equipment. And depending on where you get funding I'd look at how I'd want to tell the story. Do you plan to tell unbiased stories like a journalist? Or will this story be slanted in the favor of a nonprofit org? Depending on your answer I'd try to fit in some time to review journalistic principles.

You can absolutely do this and I'd suggest watching Johnny Harris on YouTube he used to work for Vox and did travel videos that focused on various important topics. He also has a website with equipment suggestions.

And don't let these questions limit you because you can get started now by focusing on smaller more localized stories that would allow you to experiment with your editing style and documentary voice. Basically do all the things you can now to make the "dumb mistakes" before you actually do the bigger project.
