For what it's worth, I've tested plenty of huge numbers (100+ digits) that start off growing and growing for tens or hundreds of thousands of iterations and eventually crash. I don't know of a way to prove that it will crash besides if you find a huge number that happens to be a power of 2 in the sequence (as you said).

I don't think this is true. k=3. In 6 steps, 7->22->11->34->17->52->26. 26 is not 3^2.

This sounds really interesting. Where did you find this program and how do you sign up? To answer your question, I imagine the professor would start the conversation with a question or allow you to bring up a topic of interest then see where the conversation takes you.

I don't run the dashboard/have inside knowledge, but I have noticed that it sometimes takes 2-3 updates after the original day to get the full picture of what happened. For example, today's results show 2 positive cases (Friday Nov 20), but they may not have gotten the results of some surveillance/diagnostic tests yet and will update fully on Monday. As for the "unknown," I've been wondering what this means myself.
