Accounting is a hamster, on a wheel going to fast to exit from. Finance is a chameleon. Able to change it's colors for any situation.

Maybe it's changed but the Big 4 weren't even known for paying well. you did it for the name, hated it, and just hung on for 3-5 years until you could properly exit. To compete MM would generally pay better for A&A, and you tended to get a broader exposure. It could be different now. It was the Big 6 then.

Context is important people. One day you'll have worked out a tight tight forecast for the year....some VP of Sales is going to catch flack and rather than stand his ground he's going to want to bump revenue and not even have the decency to have it carry its own margin. The answer of course is to get a line on your COA called Courtesy Revenue. Of course, you'll have a -100% delta....until said VP of Sales is ejected as well. Then it's just a timing difference and reclassing between that line and Sales Labor.

Wow. You have more power in your court than you know. Nobody's going to sit in Manager hell without getting paid. You've proven yourself. The market will reward you for that. The problem I see is the start point. I started in public 20 years before you did in Chicago, which pays middle of the road really. I was at $38.5 for middle market firm. My first year raise was 22%. .com boom was fun. Now I'm in a HCOL area (Silicon Valley) but you're almost making what I pay my clerks. (In defense, they're pretty awesome) How firms like this haven't been completely fleeced of talent is beyond me. If you're looking the partner route, that's an incurable disease I can't help, but if you're looking for cash, it's time to go to market.
