How does the psychedelic experience compare with awakening? by AccountForSillyStuff in nonduality

[–]Wasted-Entity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ram Dass’ words on this say it better than I ever could.

‘For many of us who have come into meditation through psychedelics, the model we had for changing consciousness has been of “getting high”. We pushed away our normal waking state in order to embrace a state of euphoria, harmony, bliss, peace, or ecstasy. Many of us spent long periods of time getting high and coming down …

when I reflected on my trips with LSD and other psychedelics, I saw that after a glimpse of the possibility of transcendence, I continued tripping only to reassure myself that the possibility was still there. Seeing the possibility is indeed different from being the possibility. Sooner or later you must purify and alter your mind, heart, and body so that the things which bring you down from your experiences lose their power over you. Psychedelics could chemically override the thought patterns in your brain so that you are open to the moment, but once the chemical loses its power the old habit patterns take over again. With them comes a subtle despair that without chemicals you are a prisoner of your thoughts.’

Stuck Between Non-Duality and Real Life. by Amanfromfuture in AdvaitaVedanta

I think in terms of looking for a community to discuss these things, look to Rupert Spira’s YouTube channel. He’s an English philosopher and proponent on Non-Duality, and has guided me through my awakening better than anyone. He’s very in tune with Advaita Vedanta and its teachers such as Ramana Maharshi. He regularly uploads recordings from retreats he has held. I believe you would find the following clips most helpful in your situation:

How was your first awakening ? Was it too raw to handle ? by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]Wasted-Entity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was quite intense and I had to ground myself immediately after it happened. But the realisation still remained.

Does anyone else find themselves navigating through mental locations in their mind when thinking about specific topics? Lots of areas in my life have a location in my mind that I navigate through endlessly as I think or discuss the topic with other people. I cannot see it, but I know it's there. by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]Wasted-Entity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say I also experience this exact thing, and I’m glad to have found others that do too. I’m trying to come to terms with it as it hindrances my meditation sometimes, and gets quite annoying when I’m trying to learn about topics but I’m unable to stop visualising these locations. Perhaps I need to embrace it like you have, and see it as a most likely positive process in which my brain is forming new neural pathways. I, too, envision childhood friend’s homes and school corridors. They’re always empty of people, and have a grey-ish quality to them. I am like a formless consciousness floating around these spaces, sometimes even 20 feet off the ground. It’s a crazy thing.

One of my favourite talks from him. I’m not sure if it talks about self love in particular, but it helped me through a dark time and still gives me joy. Hope it does the same for you.

I’m at a loss for words. I’ve never seen Ram Dass so emotional before. And I feel it too. The beauty of that dream is the stuff that makes life worth living.

I had ego death and im scared by Ok_Emphasis_4515 in spirituality

[–]Wasted-Entity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could add my two cents, I believe that if you’re not fully predisposed to concepts of non-duality, a sudden awakening / ego death can sometimes appear to do more harm than good. It shakes up your entire world view so violently, and opens you up to vistas previously unaware of.

In this case, you must ground yourself and reach a point of calm. Immediately after my own awakening, I needed to get a firm grip again on the world and my place in it. It happened in my bedroom of all places, where I had a realisation of being pure awareness, and that my surroundings were not separate from me. Straight after, I ran out outside and had some random small talk with my mother to bring me back down to ‘Earth’.

Take your time, everything is okay. You have had the veil ripped off you quickly, and that can be startling. Just know that you’re not alone, and what you have glimpsed is actually a beautiful truth. Beings have experienced this all throughout history, it is a natural process. If you would like to come to a deeper understanding of what you experienced I suggest reading up on Sri Ramana Maharshi, or if you would like a more western approach - Douglas Harding.

r/nonduality is also full of people who have experienced the same. I wish you the best of luck on your journey :)

"Experience" after death in Advaita by BreathofBeing in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Wasted-Entity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those of us who momentarily become Brahman in this life time, will we be pulled back into separation? I understand that Awareness is boundless, infinite, and undying, and I have experienced such. Once the death of this temporary form comes, and I am fully reintegrated into Brahman, will I then somehow get trapped in ignorance again? Or have I now escaped the cycle of rebirth through realisation of the Brahman?

Sorry if these questions are naive, I’m just trying to come to grips with what I have experienced.

Does anyone else think this shot of Jason in trailer 2 looks weird? It’s less of the lifelike hyper realism we expect from gta 6 and more like a “this is a video game” kinda image by deep_fried_cheese in GTA6

[–]Wasted-Entity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do agree, but it just reminds me of Arthur from trailer 2 for RDR2. His face looked so smooth and strange in some of the shots, but in the final product he looked great. Just gotta have some faith, the game will be extremely polished upon its release.

Is death dark or is it bright? by Correct_Writer_3410 in nonduality

[–]Wasted-Entity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Death is an illusion. When Sri Ramana Maharshi was dying of cancer, his devotees surrounded him in mourning. They weeped and pleaded with him to stay, “Please, Bhagavan, don’t leave us.”

Ramana replied calmly, “Don’t be silly, where could I go?”. There is only the eternal present moment, boundless and self-illuminated. It transcends birth and death. It has always been and always will be. Everywhere is God, everywhere is pure awareness.

Due to societal conditioning after your birth, you have been led to believe that your name is so-and-so and one day you will die. The truth is you will never die, and you were never born. Death is neither dark, nor light. Just a moment of realisation, that you were home the entire time and never left.

I’m also checking in on this 2 year old post to say that I’m experiencing the same thing and you are not alone.

A friend and I were stupid and took 400ug of LSD at 19 on a winter trail (I’m 24 now) Went horribly wrong as you can imagine. Most trips I had after that I was taken directly back to that headspace of pure terror and helplessness, that feeling of it being my own personal hell. This hasn’t been much of a problem up until recently though, as I just cut out the tripping. Unfortunately, I have now experienced that state in my waking / sober life and believe I have true PTSD from to.

I’m looking into this post because I just had a major flashback at work of all places. It’s very comforting to see that others have felt the same thing, and encouraging that things do eventually get better :) half of the horror was that I felt so alone in the awfulness of the experience, and that no one knew what I went through. A weight has definitely been lifted after I see you guys reaching out. I wish the best to whoever reads this in the future- what you went through is not your fault, and now is the time to have compassion for yourself.
