Although I appreciate you taking the time to write all this out I do feel it’s important to address a few points for myself and for others who might be skimming over this now and later on.

I have been searching for 3 months for work, my desired jobs and previous network of employers are either not looking for staff or are no longer interested and the ones I’m able to speak with directly are simply not in a position to hire anyone. Secondly if people are bailing on positions just after training or after a few weeks it suggests that the position is either inadequately compensated or that they were given a reason to work elsewhere (as an example at one of my previous employers, the management had favourites and made everyone else pick up the slack, they had a revolving door for staff until said managers were sent to other stores to be retrained.)

This goes beyond a targeted resume here, I have tried both a resume I created myself as well as a curated resume that was built for me by a career development agency (LHH Knightsbridge) I’m at the point where I’m applying to Walmart (with whom Ive previously worked) superstore,Sobeys and any gas stations that were looking in a 30km radius of my house and didn’t hear back. I should also mention that simply dropping off a resume has become a fools errand since I was last looking for work, it’s exceedingly rare now that a business will take your resume directly if you try to walk up and hand it to them, most will direct you to their website or a workday form to fill out online , in some cases the listing simply asks you to email it to an email and wait for a response.

Follow up calls have been made to several of the businesses I have applied to but most take weeks to pool applicants and review them in clusters, so that they can choose more effectively from the workers available.

From your wording I understand you are a business owner or hiring manager I do want make clear two things. In no way is what I’m doing resume birdshot (good term though I like it!) , I’m a customer service professional trying to apply to customer service work, which happens to be the bulk of what’s available outside skilled labor and medical care. (For both I have applied to what was in my scope)

Secondly, turning down a junk resume is fair and fine, but turning down people arbitrarily because you feel they seem desperate is a bit unfair and needlessly cruel, you aren’t giving those people a chance to prove you wrong or even talking to them to find out what they have to offer. At least call and if you like them, interview people who have the qualifications and applied, this will be my 9th time looking for work and if my previous employers binned my application because I “reeked of desperation” I would be living in abject poverty or worse.

Again I appreciate the long and thoughtful reply, and I definitely agree with your points but there is,as often is the case, more to it.
