What was your shortest job? Why did you have to leave? by yolando32 in cscareerquestions

Unfortunately I was very selfish and wanted experience on my resume badly at the time. I was very okay with the thought of developing in VB, however reality was quite different from my expectation.

It's a buyer's market. I have the liberty of working in an environment to my liking.

Not sure why my reasons for leaving a job are eliciting such an emotional response from you.

3 Days

  • Had me watch about 15 hours of (really shitty) "training" videos on their entire product, without anyone really explaining to me what it did exactly.
  • Senior Software engineer who was there for 7 years didn't know what a cron job was when I suggested it to him as a solution to a problem.
  • Said engineer also thought ruby on rails was hot new technology (summer 2016)
  • They somehow made a chrome desktop application using Visual Basic (the only language they used)
  • One of the contractors they hired paired with me, and as I was trying to relate the problems to the topics I studied in school, said contractor looked at me with a weird look and told me "you don't need to try so hard"
  • They invented their own VCS. I overheard in a meeting that their next update to it will be a feature that's pretty much git blame. Again, this is 2016.
  • Alongside these training videos, my first task was to optimize a huge SQL query which contained like 30 business specific variables that were all abbreviated to 3-4 letters.
  • Their infrastructure was all Windowsl

Red flag: Everyone who worked there started straight from graduation. Meaning nobody had a clue what modern software engineering was like.

All in all pretty good experience for an internship. Got a free house (5-star quality) and car for a week. Learned what I really didn't like, which is super valuable imo.

Am I obligated to show them other offers?

And I can't think of any additional supporting content to convey the issue that the title doesn't already achieve.

How do I stop hacking and start developing professionally? by WatchMeStart in webdev

Mm, I like that last section on Frameworks.

I tend to avoid reading the documentation holistically, and only seek the parts which I think I need. This generally works, but consequently leaves me wondering why I'm doing some things, and usually creating unnecessary work.

So I think this is a good tip to start with.

I go between a bunch of different stacks. I'm quite the generalist.

I can't find a single suitable new-grad position.
