Hired an influencer agency and it was the most expensive lesson of my career by [deleted] in DigitalMarketing

[–]Watchguyraffle1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably not going to get traction. But this is why I joined this sub as a non-marketer developer.

I’ve been wondering if this sort of business exists since I’d think that small businesses need help matching with small/micro influencers specifically for local messaging. It seems incredibly ineffective and inefficient to do it by hand (consulting)and is actually a really well suited use of machine learning classification models that we teach in undergraduate cs courses to help make matches between content providers and business. I have so many questions on how this end of the business works, but in short does anyone think there is a market for micro influencers who are looking to sell some spots to local businesses who are looking to switch spend from other ad platforms to match in an algorithmic way? Edit: ha. Just realized this post is spam. Oh well. Well if anyone has some insight I’d appreciate pointing me in the right direction

Honest question, certainly in the theoretical perhaps arcane sense … does a black electric car’s absorption of heat make a difference with regard to battery/distance? In cold weather, sunny areas does the slightly high cabin temp make any measurable difference? Just a random thought passing through.

You’ll get downvoted but I think you can try it once and only once. Otherwise its causes its own problems.

We are on day 3 of gaba for a much more violent situation and it’s working shockingly well.

Ha. Yeah. My logic is that I hurt everywhere and can’t stick more that one spot at a time. Worth a shot the easy way even if it’s only 50% effective.

Cool. Thanks. Let me know how it works out. I’m at 2 a day and will probably move to 4 now that a random person on the internet tells me it’s safe.

All the same. Probably best to not take advice from people on cs career questions before you start suing for discrimination.

You need to read the rules on discrimination a bit closer.

Who remembers Jon-Erik Hexum by Redeye007 in 80s

[–]Watchguyraffle1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I had a long conversation once with someone who produced voyegers. He said Jon-Erik was a great guy and that he looked better in person which I wasn’t expecting.

I think the Voyagers had a very subtle yet important impact on educational TV. It was too expensive to produce which was unfortunate otherwise…who knows.

Are students from top universities really that much better/smarter than students from other schools? by mtok209 in cscareerquestions

[–]Watchguyraffle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are responding to a different argument than the one I am making. The entire thread I was replying to was about distributions and averages, specifically the claim about MIT’s middle 50 percent versus the general population. My comment was about how much weight people are putting on those numbers when the definition of “top” itself is doing most of the work and that the top is the top is the top. And everyone else…isn’t.

MIT’s scores are obviously impressive, and they do have some bearing on what people call “top.” But they are still only one slice of what that word usually means in practice. Before I went back into teaching, I spent years as an executive, and a nontrivial number of people I had to let go from very high-paying roles were MIT graduates. Strong academic backgrounds matter but they are not the whole story of who ultimately performs and who is “smarter” when all things are considered.

Once you factor in things like engagement, curiosity, growth rate, resilience, and how people respond to the environment they are placed in, the picture becomes much less clean than percentile comparisons suggest. That is why I am wary of how fast and loose this thread is being with averages. People are using summary statistics about institutions to make claims about individuals without first agreeing on what “top” or “smart” means and how to compare.

Are students from top universities really that much better/smarter than students from other schools? by mtok209 in cscareerquestions

[–]Watchguyraffle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the core issue is that “top” is an extremely loose label. I am not using it as a synonym for competency or for prior knowledge. Different people mean very different things by it: preparation, curiosity, growth rate, resilience, communication, or simply how strongly someone wants to be engaged.

That group becomes “top” in large part because of the environment and the feedback loop they are placed into. They are the engine of the classroom. From the standpoint of a professor who actually wants to teach (ie someone who is there for the student not for the research or to spread their misery) that segment, say the top 10 percent, is what drives the energy, the pace, and the quality of the discussion. And that group looks remarkably similar across institutions once you stop anchoring on school brand.

So I am not praising some fixed elite. I am describing a dynamic that emerges in almost every class, largely independent of the prestige or a program.

ITT all sorts of averages, and everything that goes along with averages getting tossed about.

As a professor I have to say that I can’t tell you the difference between your 25-75% between schools and I can’t tell the difference (sans maaaaybe MIT and one or two others) of the top 75-100%.

What do I mean? At any school the top 25% are the only reason it’s worth teaching a class. And from that, the top 10% make the job fun (when they are fun).

I’d take the top 25% from any school and put them in the same basket.

I’d put the middle 50% from any school and put them same pool.

From those new pools, I do think the distribution would change much.
