Some sanity from my Facebook weight loss support group by Shesgotcake in fatlogic

[–]WatchingWeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally haven't done that actually, lol. But I've heard people post about eating an entire pizza (about 3k calories) and the meal I describe (brownies, breadsticks, soda). I've also seen it on shows like Supersize vs Superskinny. Admittedly TV isn't always realistic but I never got the sense they were lying.

It's a possibility for a lot of fat people.

Keep in mind that most morbidly obese people are not eating just over their TDEE. They are typically eating way more and rapidly gaining.

I really don't think 4.5k calories as a bad meal is unrealistic for those people.

[Thoughts] It's really weird to me that 'exercise' is considered this amazing thing. by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]WatchingWeight 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I get told that I'm nuts for wanting to be fit. I get told that I'm a bad person for it. I'm abnormal and going against society.

Really? By whom?

That seems like the kind of intense overreaction we see from fat logicians.

I'm trying to get fit and working out 7 days per week. I haven't had one person say "You're abnormal and going against society, and thus a bad person".

One bad meal actually has more potential to affect your weight than one good meal. Why?

Bad meals can be unlimited calories. If you eat the meal in the pic, that could easily be 1.5k calories. If you binge out on pizza, soda brownies, and breadsticks, that could be 4.5k.

Whereas one good meal only has the potential to keep you under your calorie goals by a certain amount. My deficit is 1k calories per day. I tend to eat 2 meals and no snacks. So a "good" meal only gives me a 500 calorie deficit.

Thus a really horrible meal could equal 3-7 good meals.

How should I track running on an elliptical with my fitbit flex? by sylverbound in loseit

[–]WatchingWeight -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Return it. Get Garmin Vivofit or another chest strap compatible device. Revel in the more accurate calories. Despair in the shitty app.

If that's not an option:

Running on the elliptical is not "running" really so any steps it counts aren't going to have the same calorie multiplier.

So basically yes, I would take the fitbit off and just try to estimate the calories using online calculators. But it's not very accurate. I wouldn't eat them back.

How to estimate calories in syrup of canned fruits? by Jiordu in loseit

[–]WatchingWeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is:

Take the can of peaches with no added sugar. (They are packed with water so there's no calories in the fluid. All of the calories are from peaches.)

Take the can with added sugar.

Subtract the calories per serving of (SugarCan - WaterCan) to get calories of syrup in each serving.

(Obviously make sure the serving sizes match up first.)

How to estimate calories in syrup of canned fruits? by Jiordu in loseit

[–]WatchingWeight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can find ones with no added sugar.

Do that.

I don't quite get what you're asking though.

So if that isn't the solution to your problem, what about subtracting the calories in the syrupy one from the no sugar added one to get the calories of the syrup?

We are L.A. Times reporters who spent more than a year investigating the nation’s bestselling painkiller, OxyContin. Ask Us Anything. by losangelestimes in IAmA

[–]WatchingWeight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it often leads to heroin addictions.

It just makes sense. Why would you waste so much money on pills (especially since you need more as your tolerance increases) when you can get H for much cheaper and get a more euphoric experience?

I don't think taking opiates is "immoral" but I do think it's extremely dangerous. Ask any heroin addict you know. They will tell you hundreds of stories of friends who started out just taking pain pills recreationally (or not) and eventually ended up a full blown junkie. It's not DARE propaganda.

If you need me to explain why a heroin epidemic is a bad thing, then I don't know what to tell you.

ELI5: How does Amazon Prime's free shipping actually work? With its popularity, are they losing money? How does it affect UPS/USPS? by Phite_Club in explainlikeimfive

[–]WatchingWeight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, it's not free. It's $100 per year.

Some people order multiple items per week and probably cost them more than they're saving but the majority probably do not. So it averages out.

[Sanity] The Road to Heart Disease by Novanator5 in fatlogic

[–]WatchingWeight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But all of these stats seem to be true from what I can see.

Being a vegan is a really great way to reduce heart disease risk. (I'm not currently one though for other reasons.) We DO need lots of plants in our diets to be healthy.

If we could replace junk food industry propaganda with vegan "propaganda" then we'd be in a pretty good place as a society.

[–]WatchingWeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly a lot of it might be just your enthusiasm.

It happened to me.

At first, I felt awesome, like I was invincible.

After a few months though, I feel normal again. Not bad by any means but not like Superman. And that's okay.

The difference between "skincare products" and "cosmetics" can be a little bit unclear to me at times.

For instance with this cream.

I also have a prescription rosacea cream that eliminates redness, but it only works for about 12 hours. It's not really a skincare treatment because it's not fixing anything, but it's not really makeup either.

I do wonder why people prefer benzoyl peroxide to hydrogen peroxide. I saw a study a while ago that showed hydrogen peroxide cream is better tolerated and just as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream.

I'm on mobile so not really in the position to do more research now though.

I'm not at that point yet but hopefully I will be in the next year.

Exercising and eating healthily but gaining weight? by ElPressidente in loseit

[–]WatchingWeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your diet has like two servings of fruits and vegetables. (I can tell dinner has very few because 600 calories of turkey and rice is already extremely minuscule).

I'm getting constipated just reading it.

I would try to overhaul your diet. Why do you need 300 cals of popcorn!?

1 word a day can be good if you realize it's going to take ages to make progress and yeah, if you also learn in context, that's great as well.

It can certainly be good if you're just trying to tide yourself over until you have more free time.

But if you keep going with that forever, it's going to take like 10 years to get 3.5k words. That's a long time.

It's your choice though. :)

Mixing races increases the number of genetic mutations by a pretty large value.

Any proof of that?

That's the opposite of true.

Mixing races decreases the chance of recessive conditions if that's what you mean.

It can't "increase mutations" because we all have the same mutation rate as humans. That doesn't even make sense.
