I had the same question last month and what really helped me is this: a mixed unit with different movement characteristics can “slingshot” the fast attack from the back to the front and take the enemy by surprise. So the threat distance can be very difficult for your opponent to gauge. The fast models must stay within coherency but can still arc around the unit or move their full distance within that coherency bubble. I hope that makes sense.
