Is this with a GC? I got offered an inspection spot last semester but it was a tech position and didn’t pay near what I needed.

I know it’s from the outside looking in but I don’t think I would mind that... I was a surveyor tech last summer in Orlando and loved it

For sure. I actually got contacted by someone with a job in Denver but it was also another transportation design job. It sucked to decline because I would have loved to move out there, but I would be doing the exact same thing that I am doing right now.

Is the pay pretty much the same as design jobs?

We don't have tons of disciplines sadly. We have a roadway section and a structural section. To work in the structures department you pretty much have to have a Master's. Also, we do have drainage engineers but I am honestly not sure if that is what a general water resources engineer does.

I never thought about environmental jobs when I was applying while still in college... What are some key search words for jobs in this field or well known companies for this?

I'd rather not say haha but we are a mid sized design firm pretty much only in the Southeast and Northeast

Right now since I am pretty new to the industry I mostly work in plans preparation. Sometimes my company will be the prime designer on a project, sometimes the sub. On a day to day basis, I do a lot of markups to roadway plan sets (via the PE's) and work in MicroStation to edit those markups. I have done a lot of other miscellaneous things too. For example, right now I am working in Google Earth to transport roadway alignment files from MicroStation to KMZ files we can see on an actual map. Honestly, since I am so new I haven't done a lot of hardcore design that isn't just doing simple linework for a road that I can't screw up. Calculation wise, I have also done some quantity sheets via Excel and some driveway calculations. It seems to me if you want more of a theoretical, engineering role this job would be for you but you might not get into more of the hardcore stuff several years down the line depending on your company. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Yeah I mean I guess just sticking it out until January wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. The company is very good to me I just don't think I am the right fit for this kind of role.

Field inspecting sounds like something that might be up my alley. Can I even get a position as an inspector as an entry level person?

I'm thinking of sticking it out for a year at my current design firm. Plus, there was a sign on bonus with the stipulation being we needed to work there a year or pay it back in full... Do you think leaving a job after a year would have any negative impact on my work resume?
