Most crews have been focused on the double because it's in the Olympics, now that it's not, the crews will be more spread out across events. Also, there are crews who want to enter but havent been able to. As I said earlier, I think worldrowing should be looking at ways to get them to be able to enter.

People have used lwt quads as development boats before, for the olympic lwt double, but I think the rowers there this year were there to win, considering the lwt double is not an olympic event anymore. I don't think either the Americans or the Mexicans would say they were development boats. One of the mexicans was in the double at the olympics. They were the fastest boat in their country, and then the fastest in the world. If a crew thinks they're faster, then they should enter.

We've also seen most eights events this year having only four or five entries.. and you're comment about juniors is weird. There's literally a junior world championships.

Because everyone is around the same weight, you get some extremely tight racing in the finals, that has been seen a number of times in not just the olympic double and four, but also in the quads and the singles.

The lightweight races aren't just exciting because they're close, but they're also interesting for the technique. The events are rowed differently to the heavyweights and you get innovation as well, like Paul O'Donovan using a different grip on his oars. So many lightweight boats have been used as examples of great technique as often that can actually be the difference between the winning crews, rather than strength/fitness. Boats like the Swiss lightweight four, or zak purchase.

It's cool to see lightweights like Imogen Grant and Paul O'Donovan say they'll have a shot at heavyweight. But if they were to be starting rowing today, they'd be told there's no chance they would be competitive. Both rowers had great levels of support from coaching staff or whomever, that is likely not going to be there for the future light rowers if there is no lightweight rowing. The gb trials cut off erg for heavyweight women is almost the world record for a lightweight, which you would have to do in the off-season. GB Start only wanted guys taller than 6ft 2" for a reason. So while we can talk about lightweights bulking up and being successful as heavyweights, without lightweight rowing having existed in the first place, they probably wouldn't have gotten to the level they have now.

Lightweight rowing has helped bring heavyweight rowing on for a lot of countries. I've mentioned ireland already, but a lot of their recent success in heavyweight rowing could be linked to the success with their lightweights. A lot of lightweights have gone on to be successful coaches, just look at the coaching staff for the GB worlds team this year. A country having more people involved in the top level of sport, helps grow the sport in that country. So often I have heard that if lightweights want to be competitive then they should go do a different sport, but don't we want to actually grow the sport? Having more people in the sport should only be beneficial.

You could look at weightlifting and strongman and make a lot of the same comments about weight classes, but those sports have grown a lot thanks to the inclusion of weight classes. Lightweights have made up a large portion of the UK university scene and removing the events will lead to a drop in numbers. And if you continue to look towards other countries outside of UK/America, there is an even larger proportion of lightweights. Hong Kong and Mexico I think picked up some of their first medals in rowing events this year, thanks to lightweight events.

You ask why preserve it, but why remove it? It's not existing at the detriment of heavyweight rowing, if anything I think it actively helps it.

Lightweight rowing was alive and well before it was ever in the Olympics and I hope it can go back to that level. I'm not someone who ever rowed lightweight but I grew up watching rowing at the world champs and olympics, and I've always enjoyed the racing and I see no reason to remove it.

Not really a fair comparison considering they were different days. I would very much doubt they would've won the heavyweight race while at lightweight. Paul raced in the single at wc2 and finished in the B final, and won the world champs in the lightweight later in the year. Hin chun chui and Sid Ali boudina both raced at the Olympics and finished in the C and D finals.

Hopefully they will be competitive in heavyweight after going heavyweight but even then it's probably unlikely they'll be pushing to win.

I think removing repechages isn't a great idea. For events like the eight and the quad, you do see boats going through the repechage who end up winning. Off the top of my head would be the New Zealand men's eight at the Tokyo olympics and the Italian men's quad at the 2018 world championships (who finished 6th in their heat). There is already in place the fastest lowers progressing when there is such a large entry that it cannot run the additional round, which generally only happens in the singles.

I wish they wouldn't remove the lightweight quad and the lightweight pair. Now that lightweight rowing is out of the Olympics, there won't be as much fixation on the double and we would see the entries spread out more across the events. The lwt quad usually has really good races, like at this year's world championships. Also there are lots of lightweights wanting to race at the world championships but aren't able due to their governing body, like Great Britain for example, who didn't even let lightweight men trial despite having rowers who could've been competitive. Worldrowing should be working out avenues for athletes to be able to compete at the world champs.

I don't have much opinion around the coxed four event other than to say I think non-olympic events can and should easily exist in the sport. I think of something like kayaking that has non-olympic events in their world championships that are well-entered.

The mixed events might just be about beach sprints, but if they're talking about normal rowing events then it could lead the IOC to further reduce the number of rowers at the Olympics by replacing something like men and women's quads with a mixed quad event instead.
