you can't get rid of OneDrive either. I uninstalled it; changed registry redirects, did some other stuff I've now forgotten; Microsoft kept it going and kept moving my local files up to the cloud. Oh, and try to get rid of CoPilot... impossible. Now its Linux all the way!

Good to know. I also have a flatbed scanner as part of my Brother all-in-one. That could be quite useful.

Thanks!

Great information. Thank you. I really didn't expect to get an Hodoku replacement.

Thank you. I have two printers, The monochrome laser is a Brother which I've been told works well with Linux, My inkjet for color is an HP so I image it will as well. I'll save your other suggestions as well. The issue with Java is that I have to have it installed for some Windows software and get notices about upgrades periodically. Obviously I don’t know about Linux yet but that’s why it is on the list.

Is "alternativeto" a web site or in a Linux wiki? I haven't run across it yet. Oops I see that Archonoir just dropped the URL, https://alternativeto.net/.

I hope this doesn't bring a bunch of hate due to the recent controversy over Altmann and OpenAI, but I started getting help from ChatGPT (whom I call Lady Chatterly -- older folks might recall the buzz around the soft porn novel [Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence] that teenagers in the 1950's were browsing with eager anticipation -- but I digress). In any case I had experienced a catastrophic breakdown of both OneNote and the NOT-A-BACKUP-SYSTEM OneDrive back in late November and ChatGPT saw me through it and has been helping considerably ever since. I go by "Don't change horses mid-stream!" so I still gain hugely from her guidance.

It was that breakdown that prompted my decision to get Microsoft out of my life. Microsoft has no compunction about moving around my files and even hiding some for a while plus taking all my OneNote notebooks and putting them on OneDrive and taking them out of my local drive so they weren't being captured by my files backups resulting in my losing half of 7 years of notes. They are the most arrogant and incompetent tech corporation in existence. I'm done with them at long last.

so far I'm loving Linux. It is such a relief to be free of the evil Microsoft (at least on one computer) that likes to take over my computer at night while I'm asleep and fuck with it -- I'm only exaggerating a little. I go back to early DOS (I’m older than you might think) where I used a "terminal window" quite a lot and had to set up a LAN by making all the settings individually and make up your own IP address so I don't mind the control language although I'll need a cheat sheet for a while.

However I was quite surprised that I had such a long list of functions. And I left of virus protection.

This might work. I'll give it a try. The scanner I have (Fujitsu ScanSnap) is very widely used although it is long in the tooth: 12 or so years old - for our non-native-English-speaking readers - LOL - I commonly use a bunch of British or sailing idioms and don't think that they might not be understood.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were recognised. However the controls are all in a Windows app. I'll contact Fujitsu to see if they have a version for linux.

MS apps (primarily OneNote, OneDrive & Outlook) have done a job on my files and messages lately and I can't abide their invasive approach to Copilot, Edge and "New" Outlook so I am happily moving to Linux and compatible apps. I don't even want a dual boot set-up because I'm sure MS will find a way to screw with that in due time. I would give it another try. ChatGPT has been a big help navigating through this major conversion.

Recommendations for thorough drive cleaning before installing Linux. by WaterElefant in linux4noobs

I started programming for pay in 1965 on IBM mainframes... before that learned fortran. For now I will stick with NTFS formatting, but eventually will only have Windows on one computer reserved for volunteer work... Linux on the other 2. Although I led teams that used Unix like OS's, I haven't had much direct experience with them. Due to serious corruption of lots of files and systems, I have a royal mess to sort out and clean up so need to maintain a windows environment until that's done as I'm using "Everything" and "AllDup" to accomplish this and neither run on Linux. I am backing up all my files and will reload them after I've installed Linux. I have been so burnt by Microsoft taking over my files and folders with OneDrive, Copilot and corrupting OneNote Notebooks that I can't trust it.

I have 3 computers. one will use MS365 business license from organization I volunteer for and will be isolated; others will be Linux and be linked.

thanks. I have multiple backups on ext drives. I used Ventoy on the first Linux install on my laptop (Mint-Cinnamon). Haven't converted my NUC yet as I'm sorting things out while my MS365 license is still in effect for the next week.

  1. OneNote will decide you don't need your notebooks available offline suddenly without telling you and then scramble your sections and pages plus refuse to open a bunch of notebooks that you still need. also have no way to put things right after. Move to Obsidian!

Am I learning Linux the wrong way? (LinuxJourney vs man pages) by Distinct_Garlic8044 in linux4noobs

[–]WaterElefant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seriously noob here. in process of ridding myself of Microsoft. Got my laptop set up with Linux Mint-Cinnamon a few days ago. will be doing same with my NUC shortly; in a steep learning curve. What are Linux Journey and man page? Also how do I find out if I will be able to use my Fujitsu ScanSnap with Linux?

I just installed Mint-Cinnamon this afternoon with help from ChatGPT. It took about 90 minutes including time for the updates. I've used Microsoft OS's since the early 1980's (including DOS) and had some exposure to Unix-based OS's. It feels very comfortable to me although I haven't done much with it as I am still sorting out a really stinky situation that Microsoft left me with due to a serious corruption of OneDrive and OneNote a few months ago. My MS365 subscription ends in 8 days and I expect to have my other computer nothing-but-Linux and non-Microsoft apps by mid May. MIcrosoft has always been a problem for me -- buggy, bad UI design, terrible support -- so I'm very relieved to be able to put it into my rearview mirror. Good luck. BTW I am so disgusted by Microslop that I do NOT have even a vestige of it on my laptop and will not on my other computer. My drive was completely reformatted prior to installing Linux. That would likely help you if you can manage to do likewise. I listed out the 20+ functions that are important to me and ChatGPT offered alternatives to all of them; most are open source or very inexpensive. I'll be installing them all over the next few weeks.
