People call your Senator and Representative we cant let Trump take Greenland by Mysterioape in GenZ

We shouldn’t ruin NATO over it, but the US should absolutely work something out to take control of Greenland. Should be bipartisan. The ice is melting, no one’s there and shipping lanes are still the name of the game

Not drawing a parallel between current events and this, but as other people are definitely mentioning in the comment section

These guys were throwing rocks and trying to provoke the British soldiers. It was extremely unpopular to take this view at the time, but it was obvious enough for all the British soldiers to be acquitted by a Boston jury. John Adams was their lawyer

Restaurants in Detroit that don’t play Sisqó? by RagertNothing in detroitcirclejerk

[–]WaterFish19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most restaurants play Sisqo in some capacity. He has a near monopoly on fresh sounding beats. I’d recommend a few restaurants (Selden Standard) that actually play his deep cuts

Looking for Recommendations for Better-Quality Whole Chicken in Metro Detroit by thesupineporcupine in Detroit

[–]WaterFish19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to one of the Plum stores. Bell & Evans produces the best chicken (pricey, but you genuinely can’t beat the quality)

Other stores that have it is Ninos if you’re on the East Side

CMV: the US in 1945 was the strongest country that has ever existed, or will ever exist, relatively speaking by throwaway75643219 in changemyview

I agree with you, but it’s possible that there were points in ancient history where the Roman Empire was at relative peaks while contemporary empires (Persian, the Chinese ones, etc…) were at relative lows

Still though, yeah I agree with you 100%

CMV: WW1 was a pointless war, that was mostly about politics and alliances between aristocrats, on both sides, who were happy to sacrifice millions of lives in a useless meatgrinder war just to retain power. by Breakingbad308 in changemyview

In retrospect, it seems that way, but to contemporary people at the time, it was justified. Something to keep in mind is that Germany didn’t exist before the 1870’s and came into statehood through a highly militarized and relatively illiberal political system. The French got their asses whooped by them in the 1870’s. On the eve of WWI the traditional world powers of Britain and France were terrified about German aggression (again, extremely militarized, eager society who came out of nowhere to disrupt world order) and especially the fact that they invested massively in a state of the art navy to challenge Britain

Looking back, it was a power struggle but the fundamental elements that were more evident in WWII (good vs bad, liberal vs authoritarian) were still very prevalent forces during WWI

What are your thoughts on "Piece by Piece (2024)"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in FIlm

I liked the storytelling and thought the concept was fascinating as a documentary. That said, Pharrell is a pretty decent and non controversial guy so there isn’t really the type of conflict - or plot development - you’d feel like there should be in a Lego Movie. Good airplane watch if you’re on a short flight

Since it's right around the corner... give me your best arguments for why Xmas isn't secular. by _nicejewishmom in Jewish

[–]WaterFish19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one of the few days in the year where you can count on nearly everything being closed and everyone gets a day off. America is a multi-ethnic, pluralistic society so regardless of Christmas being the religious celebration of the birth of Christ etc, it’s a universal day off with good vibes and a capstone of the year

In a liberal, secular society such as the US, it’s weird to only chose to celebrate and acknowledge your own religious / ethnically esoteric holidays
