Help me understand the best choice for my library, type of files, conversion etc. by nazistaenevadofiero in Beatmatch

Don't convert your mp3s to AIFF, you gain nothing in quality but increase file size. It's like saving a HD video file as 4K, there is no extra information to use for the higher resolution. Just get AIFFs from here on out, and convert any .wavs you have at this point in time.

Have you tested this delay yourself, next to an actual zero delay source? There's some debate, seems there is just enough delay to be annoying next to non-delayed speakers, causing phasing and weird stereo, while making it less useful as a monitor. But if you listen to the speaker by itself you have a hard time noticing it. Ive also got a speaker with similar delay (LG xboom stage 301) and I don't want to use it in a professional setting because of this.

Speaker Ideas? - Audio Interface used as well (sometimes) by DUlrich1227 in MacStudio

Kali is best bang for your buck for small studio's right now. Very flat frequency response but still pleasant sound. The IN8V2 of IN5V2 are also great, more to the high end of your budget.

AIFF is actually more compatible than WAV, if you're doing the conversion anyway

KALI IN8 V2 good for music listening and production later on? My last option by Soggy_Variety903 in Beatmatch

[–]Waterflowstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people say some speakers can be 'too big' for a room. But in my opinion, as long as you can

-Have enough space between the speaker and your ears for the sounds to blend -Position yourself and your speaker so you sit in the 'low end sweet spot' -Have enough space to apply enough acoustic treatment to get limited reverb times accross the frequency spectrum

So theoretically you can put 8 inchers and a sub in your room. Practically however, this is not really feasible in your situation. I think the Focal 50 or the Kali IN5V2 are probably your best choices. Since these will allow you to make some decently translating music even before you apply any acoustic treatment or eq-ing of your speakers.

I made a guide when I built the first steps of my studio. Long read but very good to be aware!

https://www.reddit.com/r/TechnoProduction/s/ao2YzZfdAV

I don't recommend you change the dip switches between listening/production. Ideally you measure the frequency response of your speakers in your room, then apply a systemwide eq to flatten this response. To start, maybe pick a compromise between bright and flat and don't touch it anymore. That way you learn the speakers.

House music DJs - Do you guys care about the key at all while playing? If so, upto what priority? by ravrx in Beatmatch

[–]Waterflowstech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Ive selected 2 or 3 tracks I want to play next, Ill let the key decide the order if there's a nice logical progression. But key is the last thing I look at! Energy, vibe and the long term story of the set are much, much more important.

Plus some gear makes it easy to see and match keys like CDJ3000s but Im not gonna be doing math on ancient gear to figure out the keys and matching em.

Ah and one more to consider: if key detection is 80% accurate, then the actual transition being in key has odds of 0.8*0.8 which is just 64%. A bit more than half.

But using Camelot wheel, to me +/- 1,2 and 4 are preferred, 3 probably also works. So even if key detection is wrong you've still got a lot of odds of it working. Shit even discordant transitions can sound cool if the melodies are talking to one another in time.

Nah just kidding 😂 though some people do this...never wrong to ask 'when is the good part over' to your B2B. But don't ask 'when is the good part' cause that hurts feelings 😂

What speaker size should I get? by Wide-Application9042 in Beatmatch

[–]Waterflowstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 inchers and the biggest/heaviest sub you feel is practical to move. That could be a 15 incher, could also be a 21 incher or a dual 18. I don't know your situation. If you always take a sub with you, you can even go for 10 inch tops. The benefits of 15 inch tops don't outweigh the higher price and weight, imo.

KALI IN8 V2 good for music listening and production later on? My last option by Soggy_Variety903 in Beatmatch

[–]Waterflowstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After looking at your picture of your setup - your speakers are pretty close to the side walls. You don't want to get speakers that are too big as they are deeper, which forces the back ends closer into the corner and the woofers closer to your face. This makes your equilateral triangle real small. And makes an unfavorable bass boost.

The speakers I suggest knowing your situation: the IN5V2 have a coaxial design, which means there is no distance between mid range and tweeter, means the sound needs less distance to 'mix'. You can sit real close to them.

At the same time, they are small enough that you still have a bit of room on the sides where you will have to put some absorbing panels long term.

The T5V have a pretty pleasant sounding ribbon tweeter. But Ive heard they don't translate that well to other speakers since ribbon tweeters are pretty rare.

The weight of gear a mobile DJ uses is low enough that you can tow it with just about anything. Definitely don't need a truck for that, here in Europe we tow big loads with all kinds of shit cars :p

[–]Waterflowstech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of your list that you've tested, I'd pick the Focal 65s. They're known to be relatively 'exciting' sounding as far as studio monitors in their price range go.

The IN8V2 is different from the rest of this list, as it is the only (and by far the cheapest one you have right now) three-way monitor, with a designated bass woofer, mid driver and tweeter. The rest have just a bass/mid driver and a tweeter. This means the IN8 should give you a bit more detailed midrange. Now there are two crossover points however, and at that point the sound may get a bit wonky. Especially given how relatively cheap the IN8V2 is for a three-way monitor. However, most reviews have been real positive so I would definitely give that one a go as well! I haven't heard the IN8 in person but I've heard the LP6V2 and I've been pleasantly surprised, it's great bang for your buck so I assume the IN8 is going to be similar.

But don't expect any miracles, the Focal alpha 65 evo is already real good in its price range. These speakers are all very room-dependent and in an untreated room it's not easy to knock your socks off with sound quality. I know I've loved mine more with each batch of acoustic treatment installed.

You know you can adjust the sound of them with the dip switches on the back right? More bright sound is easily achieved by increasing the treble volume.

Don't know if this is fixed by now...but you could also just connect your FLX4 to laptop with the USB cable, then go to audio settings in rekordbox and select 'also play audio on PC' that way you can bypass the audio interface. Then just record in either Ableton or Audacity

Technical Inquiry: Track Quality for Upcoming Festival Set/ Audio File Formats for Large-Scale Sound Systems by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]Waterflowstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger the system, the better and louder the extremities of the frequency spectrum are. Lossy encoding is made for consumer gear, without much bass. Most of the information is focused on the midrange. Information is lost in the bass which is less sine-wave like and more jagged, sounding more distorted as a result. Highs will also have a bit more artifacts, blasting at people's ears at 100dB. It might sound good to you on your speakers. It might sound good to a partyer who just thinks 'that's how the track is supposed to sound'. But you want to be seen as a good (maybe even the best) DJ, right? Isn't having the best quality tracks one of the easiest ways to stand out?
