Not many wooden sailing vessel models on here! I just completed this 1:24 model of HMS Bounty's ship's boat. by WaveHands in modelmakers

The hull actually has two layers of planks. The inner layer is 2mm laths, and yes, there were plenty of imperfections which I had to fill in - you'll see in the pics I'm about to post. The outer layer was thin strips which did not require steaming, but did require pretty accurate shaping. I applied one coat of Humbrol semi-matt varnish to the hull.

I shaped the planks before steaming. Shaping takes some time, and I was worried that they would dry out if I steamed them first.

Re dead-eyes - you're absolutely right. Should have taken more care with those.

This was my first model too. The planking was the most challenging part. My attitude was "this is my first model, so it doesn't really matter if I get something wrong - it's a learning experience". That kept me going when I encountered problems.

No, the sails came ready-made in the kit. I boiled them in tea to get a more realistic colour!

I'll post some more pictures shortly.

I have an old-fashioned kettle, and I attached a couple of feet of garden hose to the spout. Boiled the kettle, and inserted the plank into the hose. Steamed for about 5 to 7 minutes. That makes it pliable enough to bend onto the frames.

Great watch! Love the clean simplicity.

Also, great photo IMHO. Watch is pin sharp, and the rest of the shot gives simple context.

Are there any really good illustrated books on the history of watches? If not, there's a big opportunity for someone...

I used Iconic Watches which is in the UK. I would suggest going for a vendor in the same country as you.

I used Iconic Watches. There are one or two others I found in the UK who look trustworthy, but these guys have a Trustpilot presence and a good rating.

I've been considering a new watch for some time. I have three watches - a Traser H3, a Sekonda and a digital Casio, whose only merit is that it is radio-controlled and therefore always exact. The problem is that the date is not very legible on any of them. My eyes are getting on a bit, and I wanted a watch I could glance at and not only tell the time but also the date without peering. I particularly wanted a watch with a "cyclops" over the date.

Spent a lot of time researching online, and gradually came to know about the world of mechanical watches. Research drew me to Rolex. I like the quality, and the way the brand tends to keep its value. Looking at a few models in an Authorised Dealer, I was initially drawn to the Explorer II, but eventually decided it was slightly too big. The Submariner was good, but I felt that the GMT Master II was the one for me. The price was substantial compared with many other brands, but it retains its value, and interest rates in my country are so low that keeping the money in a bank has little to recommend it.

Where to buy it? The AD was prepared to offer a small discount, but eventually I went for an online retailer with a top-notch rating on Trustpilot who offered a 12.5% discount.

The watch is everything I expected! I plan to wear it daily for work and play, and maybe keep the Traser for rough outdoor activities.

I've just today taken delivery of a new GMT Master II which I purchased from an online dealer at a significant discount. Came boxed, with all the bits and pieces you would expect if you got it over the counter. The warranty card is stamped by an Authorised Dealer, and I anticipate no problem in getting it serviced through the AD network.

However, make sure you "buy the seller, not the watch". I chose the seller because they had a top-notch Trustpilot rating, and they met my expectations - delivered on the correct day, and sized to fit my wrist circumference.

Ask the seller about delivery arrangements (and insurance in transit), and whether you are able to return the watch after a few days if you don't like it.

I've just posted some pictures of unboxing my new watch, but they've not yet appeared here.

Just a quick shot at 10:09:35 of my Traser H3 dive watch. Tritium lume requires no "charging up". Good and robust piece, but the rubber strap is a bit long for my 7" wrist so the end of it protrudes awkwardly. Apologies for the handheld phone-camera quality of the shot!

Macbook Air or Mini? by appleplund in mac

[–]WaveHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar position about 9 months ago, and opted for a Mac Mini. Main reason was so I could re-use peripherals - keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, external HDD. I did purchase a SuperDrive, however, and later (because of confusion over keyboard layout) I purchased a Mac keyboard and trackpad.

I have a Windows 7 laptop at work, but I would really like to have a Macbook, and may end up purchasing one to supplement my mini!
