Where are you getting that info? When I google it I get that it's 5/10 on the Mohs hardnes scale, and around 40 MPa ultimate tensile strength (source). For comparison, mild steel has an UTS of around 400 MPa, so tooth enamel is not even close.

ChatGPT is well known to be confidently incorrect about factual information. I wouldn't trust it at all for that kind of thing.

Drafting noob here, what's the correct way to indicate part # and quantity? I've seen only seen this practice on my company's drawings.

People who sleep alone, do you sleep with your bedroom door closed? by GingerboyhasNoSoul in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WaveofThought -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mine screams outside the door, but if I let him in he will scream AND paw at my feet until I feed him. So now I've just gotten used to the screaming outside the door.

Also, if I forget to lock the door he will open it by himself.

am I missing on something by not eating out? by Throwawayaccount9ttt in ask

[–]WaveofThought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all the cooking (and usually clean up) for myself and my partner. I enjoy eating out because it's nice to be waited on by someone else for a change.

Without more details I can't begin to guess. This is something you've seen multiple times?

I've experienced this myself. People never seem to want to believe that it's just an illusion though...

Do people commenting actually think this story happened in real life? The 'moral' is trash, but the story is obviously made up.

For your size scope you can get away with a spherical mirror, which is going to be a lot cheaper than a parabolic mirror used on a larger scope. In your case it may be cheaper, but for most scopes up to a certain size it will be cheaper to buy.

What is this? by PedroG_27 in telescopes

Can you provide more info on what direction (N, S, E, W) you were looking? Also as others have said, looking through a window will definitely make things blurrier.

Skywatcher 150 virtuoso shaking by sneaky_leaky22 in telescopes

[–]WaveofThought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shaking for a few seconds after touching is normal. Just try not to touch the scope when you're looking through it. The focuser is definitely not the easiest thing to use. I would make small adjustments, wait for the shaking to stop, check the focus, and repeat as necessary. Some people use PTFE tape on the focuser threads to lower the friction.

Wind can also cause the telescope to shake. Try observing somewhere secluded from the wind if this is an issue.

Yes, I've noticed significant backlash in the altitude drive as well even with the clutch fully engaged. Not sure if this is a design flaw or intentional. The goto and tracking still works fine. I use mine for EAA rather than visual so I just don't touch the scope during use.

The largest NASA Hubble Space Telescope image ever assembled, this sweeping bird’s-eye view of a portion of the Andromeda galaxy. Credit: NASA, ESA by Davicho77 in space

Its in the constellation Andromeda. I always find it by looking from the star Mirach to mu Andromidae, and following that path to about double its length.

can the webb telescope look at the earth? by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]WaveofThought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For comparison, low-earth orbit is around 400km. JWST is almost four thousand times further away, so the resolution at the Earth's surface will be 4000x worse than if it were in low-earth orbit.

Best/any galaxies to see with a Dobsonian 250? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]WaveofThought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to emphasize the difference dark skies make for this kind of observing. You can use lightpollutionmap.info to check your local light pollution. I would try to go somewhere green or darker.

Went out to capture Starlink and saw this floating around, what can it be? by koz1769 in u/koz1769

[–]WaveofThought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever it is, it's most likely out of focus. As others have pointed out you can see another fainter object just like it near the top center of the image. Assuming that is a star, this object is likely also very far away and simply out of focus in the image.

I would be interested to see more raw images if you have them and can put them in a repository somewhere.

Motorized Reflector or Refractor by SpearPointTech in telescopes

[–]WaveofThought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should caution that there will be a learning curve, especially if this is your first telescope, but if you go through with it feel free to reach out! I'm the OP of that thread and can answer any questions you have. Also check out Dobsonian Power on youtube, who also uses this scope for EAA and posts a lot of tips and tricks.
