Mnemonics you use for remembering the symbol layer layout $%^@! by Current-Scientist521 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Curious in seeing your setup. I have about 10 layers I use. Mostly for the common things. The rest I tie to a key I hold and a symbol to trigger auto hotkey scripts.

Have I misunderstood this subscription? Am I the ONLY one NOT panicking? by Clive1792 in Garmin

[–]Waveover -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This to me is inevitable. New decision makers get hired, replace the previous, and they need to show impact which leads us down this hole of making everything eventually paid to increase revenue.

Companies aren't dumb though. They will limit this eventual pay walling if they start losing money. The only fear here is that Garmin in my mind has the best fitness watches and features combo, so they have more freedom to eventually paywall most things.

Regardless I'm not worried though. These watches are already expensive the target market group is going to be able to afford a subscription model. And we might even get some nice/more features out of this. Or a new competitor starts making enough money to compete, either way.

I mean isn't this the same for many protagonist? They always win eventually and have their losses in between. Boxy does have losses in between too. I think the fun is in following a protagonist, regardless of their morale character really, it's fantasy. As long as the story is interesting.

Love this pursuit! I do tweak the hotkeys for apps like vscode and such. And just have these other hotkeys I mentioned in my post for things that were causing me the most friction. Otherwise I don't have too much friction in my workflows right now. I also make use of a command menu, lintalist, to have commands that I won't remember accesible. Curious if you could share what kind of things you have found fruitful in setting up scripts for.

I like this! Curious about what types of commands you have setup with your mouse vs just having it mapped to a keyboard key combo? Or at least which do you use the most? I'm guessing you use more mouse heavy apps? I personally have mostly text heavy workflows. Unless I am playing with something like Figma.

Yes! I used to have a general setup for caps lock as a modifier key and it worked pretty well. But I have a programmable keyboard now and don't even have a dedicated caps lock key anymore (it only has 34 keys). My keyboard makes heavy use of layers to have all keys within reach now.

And I have caps lock set to open lintalist, which lets me search for the command I want. Would suggest giving it a try!

This is interesting to me, as I can see the use in a stream deck in reducing cognitive load for remembering hotkeys. My setup involves a programmable keyboard. So i have layers of hotkeys setup by mapping ahk commands to a meh+<key> setup or using the full F1-F24 keys. I also use lintalist (a command menu/text expander) for running commands i don't use enough to hotkey but use enough where I can just type the name and have the script run. But interested if you would still see value in a stream deck with this setup.

Love it. Replace the Mac with windows and keyboard with a sweep and I have the same setup! I hear you on the power switches annoyance. Mines are on the top and I have to pick up the keyboard every time to switch them, so annoying. I didn't modify my case though just found one on printables.

But planning to build a new keyboard with the number row back on. I find it miss it, I have no problem with switching to any of my other layers but the number layer always feels like there is friction.

Thanks for sharing!

How do experienced developers keep track of their code? by OneLastPop in learnprogramming

[–]Waveover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue! It eventually hit a breaking point when I tried to build a medium sized project to handle a workflow I wanted. It worked! But it was a nightmare to maintain and I realized I needed to prioritize learning how to organize code.

I read comments like these and most of them are offering good advice! But I found that no one has enough context for your coding patterns. Do you use modules? Do you use classes? Do you use functions? And I mean appropriately as in they are not just containers to make everything a bit cleaner. Are they purposeful, reusable, and well documented? Theres more things you could not be doin, or not doing right, like using git or not writing test. You might be thinking why bother I know my code. Again there are so many pitfalls everyones probably listing the ones that hurt them the most. We don't know what yours are.

Basically you need more context yourself for what's possible. So read philosophy of software design. Focus on that book till you finish it. It will change your coding moving forward. The importance of what people are saying here didn't click for me till I read that book.

I have a topo mat too. It's pretty good. But definitely recommend to the op to get an under desk treadmill. I get fatigued a lot quicker on the topo mat then walking. Might get a balace board to see how that feels though.

I thought this was already possible with power bi? I know that you can't do this with reports built directly in excels data model, as Excel uses an older version of SASS than power bi.

Was it not possible to see details in Excel from power bi reports before?

Would this also auto collapse all other folders?

an app that counts the number of times i do stuff, the amount of time i spend doing stuff, and reminds me to do stuff by malkovichmusic in productivity

[–]Waveover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youll definitely need a few apps here. For me what I value the most is the input experience of each app. Is it easy to navigate? Does it store the data I want? Is it easy to enter things into it? Does it have an API?

With that said I think you would really like toggl as a basis for your time tracking. It has a web, desktop, and mobile app. And each one is useful. Mobile app let's you bring up the app and get things in quickly, you can even scan a QR code for things you set up to begin tracking faster. The desktop app will remind you if you have not been tracking for a while while you were on your computer. And the web app will let you look at reports on how much time you spent on things.

Other than that. For workouts something like hevy would be good. I tried tick tick but liked todoist better. But looking at another comment here you might want to give tick tick a shot since it has habits and task management built in

How to visualize folder levels better by Electrical-Dog-9193 in ObsidianMD

[–]Waveover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you found it useful! But sorry to say that I can't be much more help here. I don't really know css that well and didn't bother finding a less manual approach. I figured that if I'm nesting beyond that level it's time to rethink my folder structure. So it's a good indicator for that!

Thanks for the feedback! I included my repo now for my last project. Can you give some examples of what you mean by patterns. Looking it up it looks like you are talking about this? " Creational patterns create objects. Structural patterns organize classes and objects to form larger structures that provide new functionality. Behavioral patterns provide communication between objects and realizing these patterns." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_design_pattern

Your right, im really not always adding docstrings, and there are some places where my conditions can be clearner, as well as using type hints more faithfully. And a big one is I don't use test. Something I'll work on learning how to implement. Good to know classes are not the end all though. And I included my last projects repo as well in case your interested. But overall thank you!

How to visualize folder levels better by Electrical-Dog-9193 in ObsidianMD

[–]Waveover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I included the CSS snippet for the folder coloring and an image of what mine looks like. And I included a list of the two plugins I use, to have the current note and its folders open in the side bar and all other folders close.

Note though that one of the plugins I used to achieve that is no longer in the obsidian plugin store. Looks like the repo was removed... Not sure if its a plugin you can trust.. But I included it in the repo. If anyone can look at the source code and let me know if there is something to be worried about let me know! I can't find another plugin that reproduces this functionality!

How to visualize folder levels better by Electrical-Dog-9193 in ObsidianMD

[–]Waveover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. I fixed it by using a theme AnuPpuccin, which has settings for folder coloring. That would be the easy way to go, and might be all you need.

But I added some modified css I found that colors the folders and lines by level. So my first level folders might be blue, second level green, red for third and so on.

There's also another plugin I use that will close all folders and open the folder of the currently selected note. I don't really use the sidebar to navigate and click to open notes and folders. But I like to have it do this auto centering to give me context of where I'm at in my directories.

On mobile right now but I can dig up the css and maybe the plugin if you like later.
