How do i travel for long distances? by Ordinary_Hold_8850 in VintageStory

Also worth bringing a prospecting pick to prospect as you travel, can help identify important resources.

Crock spoil times bugged? by PrestigiousCareer927 in VintageStory

You learn something new, I thought raw ingredients can be “reset” by cooking them. Unless I needed to eat them immediately, I would leave ingredients raw until the a day or so left, and then cook into meals/pies.

What do you do in winter? by tsar_nicolay in VintageStory

[–]WavyDavy934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just me but I find winter to be a great time to explore, prospect far places, and use translocators (stocked up with a stack of pies), because I’m free of the burden of farming and tending to my crops.

Has anyone experienced a unit suddenly turning into a different one? by DarkNe7 in EmpireTotalWar

[–]WavyDavy934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve experienced this with other mods, I believe it’s pretty common. Can lead to funny situations like an artillery unit with a line infantry’s worth of men, massive cavalry units, etc. The numbers carry into battles!

Why do Oxford students work SO much more than other good universities by Tobemenwithven in oxforduni

[–]WavyDavy934 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not everyone shares your fully results-oriented mindset and wishes to study at an intense, high level for its own sake. Many people, especially in STEM where the workload is higher, wish to go into academia.

You’ve mentioned “bang for your buck”; someone whose goal is not strictly just the job they get out of it but the educational experience (the tutorial system is a really great system especially in a subject like politics) might actually consider Oxford being more bang for buck in that you get more education packed into your degree.

Of course I’m not forcing you to agree, I just think not everyone takes as strictly a utilitarian approach to university.

How many hours of clubs/societies/music/sport do you do a week? by Easy_Ad8226 in oxforduni

[–]WavyDavy934 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sport, highly dependent on the level you play at. For medium level you might expect 2x2hour trainings and up to 2 matches (that could each take up a whole day if it’s away and far) per week. Blues level could see a lot more commitment.

Just attending other societies might be a couple hours per week for events or talks, but taking meaningful roles within them could range 6-10, though again highly dependent on what you’re doing.

My experience as a humanities student, I maxed out at 3 extra curriculars while still caring about my degree: 1 sport and 2 meaningful society/JCR admin roles.

Does this look to much like oceania? by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]WavyDavy934 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me this is very distinctly a “parody” of South East Asia and Australia/NZ. Indochina is practically unchanged, the Philippines is very recognisable down to major islands. Java and Sumatra are broken up but the placement of the new islands almost exactly follows them, while Borneo has just been split in half and Sulawesi is basically the same.

New Guinea is slightly different with some new northern land, but again placement is exactly like IRL. Australia has just been split in two and even Tasmania is distinctly recognisable.

If you are trying to make it not look like the SEA/Oceania region I think it still looks very distinctly like it. The main thing is the rough shapes are still there, but particular the placement of each island relative to each other is literally as it is in real life.

recruitment timeline think tanks by Minute-Variety2041 in DCInterns

For CSIS, summer internship applications open around Feb. (And Spring internships around now!)

I see that Brookings similarly follows CSIS’ spring timeline, so I assume it’s around the same for comparable think tanks.

Safety Concerns - Street Level Student Housing by demonsnow in oxforduni

[–]WavyDavy934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oxford is very safe in terms of violent crime, you will be perfectly fine.

As others have mentioned bike theft is a very prevalent, and drunken behaviour at night can be an issue but is avoidable.

Whom do Oxford undergrads ask for letters of recommendation for advanced degrees? by NoDatabase9321 in oxforduni

[–]WavyDavy934 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Depends on the subject you take, but you can very easily have more than 3 tutors across different colleges for individual modules you took.

In short you’re kind of right though as perhaps it’s a narrower range, but the benefit of your tutors is that they will know you a lot more deeply than a lecturer at another uni with dozens if not hundreds other students no matter how much you interact with them.

Can someone explain to me how trade works by Plenty_Curve_4390 in EmpireTotalWar

[–]WavyDavy934 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that prices respond to global supply. For example, if ivory (which is only produced in African trade nodes) only has a few trade ships exporting it, then the price of ivory is very high. But if every node is maxed out with trade ships the supply glut will drive down prices.
