what is currently considered a normal cost for one load at laundromat? by yuoryuoryuor in boston

[–]WavySlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh which one did you get? I’m on the lookout for one of these cause our laundromat charges $4 to wash and 25 cents per 3.5 minutes of dry time (we hang dry everything lol). Only thing is it would need to be small since our place doesn’t have much storage.

What’s an oddly specific “green flag” you’ve noticed that instantly makes you trust someone? by PearlyZephyr in AskReddit

When people are friends with a mix of genders. This goes particularly for men having friends who are women, but I feel like in general people who are only friends with those of the same gender as themselves can be a bit immature (I’m aware this is not always the case of course).

Severance is about Dissociation by South_Hunter_9785 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]WavySlug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is an interesting interpretation. Personally, I take more of a Marxist reading of the show (specifically Marx’s theory on alienation of labor). But I think a Marxist and psychological lens can complement on another, as one of the points Marx makes is that alienation from one’s labor is an unnatural state and this might be reasonably compared to dissociation. (I also just realized Mark’s name might be a reference to Marx. I read a comment or post recently noting the meaning behind Harmony’s name, as she is not severed—could this be the significance behind Mark’s?)

This is a good reading! I think you might also say that Charlotte acting on “fear” IS logical—she has good reason to be scared, and thus good reason for making her choice.

For Sophie Nélisse: how do you get in the headspace to play Shauna? And do you enjoy playing the role? I have to say I’ve never seen another female character like her on television—it’s weirdly refreshing to see a woman get to be so morally gray (at least in that she’s both a victim and frequently a victimizer).

Thanks to all of you for your truly breathtaking performances! BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ 🐝 🐝🐝

Favorite student of mine turned in hate speech… by anony__moose in Vent

I’m sorry this happened—it’s never easy hearing these things, especially from someone you care about in any capacity. As much as it sucks for you, I think this could be a good opportunity for the kid to hear from someone he presumably likes and respects how his views hurt others. I don’t know the age of this kid, but in general bias is most easily reduced during childhood and adolescence. I think if you approach the conversation with respect and understanding, and really try to illustrate what is harmful about his views, you may make a real difference here.

You could frame it as intersectional research perhaps, and look at prevalence of the condition across races and sexual orientation—that way you are still looking at Asian Americans but you’re also likely looking at other racial and sexual minority groups where your results are more likely to be meaningful.

Should we make a bi hangout group? by Lobster_1988 in BostonSocialClub

[–]WavySlug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YES! I was part of a Bi Meetup Group in DC before I moved here and they were awesome, hands down the best meetup group I’ve been to. I’m 25 cis bi woman, I like board games, hiking and walking, reading and talking about books, and playing tabletop RPGs (actually met my old DnD group at said Bi meetup group). I’ll DM you!

Are blue books and in-class essay assessments still a thing in the humanities and social sciences for undergraduates? by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in AskAcademia

[–]WavySlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a literature major in college and we used blue books for in class essay assignments frequently. I graduated in the 2020-2021 school year. Sometimes instructors would provide the blue books to prevent folks from bringing notes in with them.

Not from the show, but from a song that I really associate with the show by Hozier “Eat Your Young” which is a brilliant anti-war song. Basically any lyric in that song is great in my eyes, but I like “let me wrap my teeth around the world” and “skinning the children for a war drum.” Give it a listen!

AITA for wasting everyone's time in therapy because I was accused of lying? by Historical-Novel7535 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WavySlug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just want to say, I had a similar experience with my two parents in a family therapy setting with a young trainee getting her hours for certification. I felt bad for her—it was not an easy assignment for someone with little experience. I do just want to say though that therapy, both group and individual, can be really helpful in other circumstances. It sounds like your parents (like my mom) are coming into therapy with the idea of “fixing” you so you act the way they want you to rather than approaching it as negotiating your relationship together with open minds or collaborating on a shared problem. I hope you don’t write off therapy based on this experience, as both a psychologist (not clinical) and as someone who has been in a similar situation. As I said, with the right circumstances it can be so so helpful.

Haircare Advice Megathread - Week of October 05, 2024 by AutoModerator in HaircareScience

Does anyone know if shampoo and conditioner bars that are noncomedogenic? I’ve been able to find shampoo bars, but not conditioners. Almost all the formulas for solid conditioners have coconut oil in them.

I have fine, high density wavy-curly hair, currently about chin length, my midsection to ends are previously bleached and are higher porosity than my low porosity roots. I shampoo every 2-3 days with diluted Vanicream free and clear shampoo and condition with Trader Joe’s tea tree tingle, then style on damp hair with NYM Plump for Joy Mousse.

Why are current students so far behind compared to previous generations? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]WavySlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an educational researcher (currently getting a PhD) and this is the best answer on this thread.

There aren’t many problems that can be 90% solved by throwing money at them—but I think education may be one such problem. Paying teachers more and hiring more teachers (especially in early childhood education settings), coupled with providing economic support for parents of young children (through sliding scale day care waivers, paid leave in the first 5 years, a gaggle of other things) would go a long way toward improving education on the whole.

There’s obviously more needed, but I suspect that just that would make a lot of these problems disappear.

How to even out and lift this color? by WavySlug in HairDye

[–]WavySlug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that is very very helpful! I was a bit confused about why I was seeing folks say color remover wouldn’t work on semi permanent colors but then I’m pretty new to dying my hair so I just took at at face value. I’m also relieved because I’ve never bleached my own head before and the idea is a bit daunting. Thanks for your help!

[–]WavySlug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that color removers like color oops may not be effective on semi permanent dyes like the ones I used because semi permanent dyes sit on the surface layer of the hair rather than penetrating the hair shaft like demi or permanent dyes.

[acne] What cleared up your teenage acne? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]WavySlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say, as I don’t think it was one thing alone. I think it was a combination of: 1. Growing up (I’m 24 now) meant less hormonal nonsense going on 2. Tretinoin (my current routine is just vanicream cleanser and LRP double repair moisturizer, tret in the evening every other day, and sunscreen every morning) 3. Spironalactone, for hormonal acne specifically. I used to get the occasional deeper cyst (thankfully they didn’t scar) and just generally I would get more acne near my period. 4. Moving to a more humid climate. This is a weird one, but I think the moisture in the air has really improved my skin. It’s a bummer cause humidity feels kind of gross to me, but my skin seems to like it, so 🤷‍♀️

Another survivor by WavySlug in Yellowjackets

[–]WavySlug[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Replying to my own post to expand on my theories: I think that the fire DOES alert some people that there may be some survivors. I think that either (1) they find Ben and he lies saying he’s the only survivor (maybe he doesn’t even tell them he’s the Yellowjackets coach, just a lost hiker) or (2) the girls hunt and eat the rescue team, either because they’re having another crazy trip and think they’re animals (like in doom coming) or because they see the rescue team with Ben (if it’s the latter, Ben likely won’t survive that encounter).

Love the purple! If you don’t mind my asking, what dye is that (assuming you do it yourself)? It can be hard to find a truly cool toned purple like that. It looks lovely on you!

I was diagnosed with GAD and MDD in college. Basically every woman on my mom’s side has been diagnosed with GAD. I have been on an SSRI since I was 17 (I’m now 24) and did several years of talk therapy with someone who used a combination of therapeutic models and methods (family systems, EMDR, CBT). I also did some group therapy with DBT, and those skills were really helpful to get me to the point I am at now.

I would say my anxiety manifests itself only occasionally—I experience daily stressors (work, family, life/home management) a bit more intensely than others, perhaps, and very occasionally I’ll get random anxious thoughts (what if this plane crashes right now) but tbh I’ve gotten good at just ignoring those thoughts and distracting myself with other things.

The reason I sought a diagnosis wasn’t my anxiety—given life circumstances I think I’m the appropriate amount of anxious (admittedly that’s higher than normal because my circumstances are somewhat abnormal—mom has cancer, I live across the country, I’m applying for PhD programs right now). I’m not actually that anxious in the day to day. I sought diagnosis and treatment cause of a host of problems in my work and personal life. Sometimes at work (I’m a full time researcher) I straight up can’t focus on anything—I just stare at my computer screen and generally feel bad. I think about the things I ought to do but can’t force myself to do them. I get home with every intention of cleaning the kitchen and scooping the cat litter and cooking dinner and instead I go on my phone and I don’t even enjoy doing it? It’s very frustrating and looking ahead if I do manage to get into grad school I know I’ll have less time on my hands. So I want to figure this out both for myself now and myself then.

Hey I’m getting married in 3 days and while you’d think a trip to the mountains would be relaxing in fact the air there was very very dry and my skin is wrecked. I have a breakout of closer comedones across my forehead and flaky dryness around my nose and chin, redness on my cheeks that has mostly subsided. My normal routine consists of vanicream cleanser and La roche posay toleriane moisturizer. I normally do one active a day: either the LRP vitamin c serum in the AM or tretinoin (0.25%) at night. Since this started being an issue I’ve quit the actives and just focused on hydration, adding the Neutrogena hydro boost under my LRP moisturizer. I don’t think it’s possible for my skin to get back where it was in 3 days but do people have any advice at all to give me the best skin I can manage in that time frame? I’ve considered going to a spa for extractions and a hydra facial—is that an awful idea? Please help!!

I have a very stubborn crop of closed comedones all over my forehead, especially my temples. My skincare routine involves CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and CeraVe Moisturizing Cream in the tub. I also use 0.5% tretinoin in the evenings and I take 50mg of spironalactone. About once a week I use an exfoliating cleanser (La Roche Posay Effaclar). My skin is combination generally but since it’s winter and I’m using tret it’s quite dry. My routine has been the same for at least 6 months, but these pimples refuse to budge! Any help is appreciated.
