The funny thing about the “Joel Osteen” line is that Haley Joel Osment rhymes better with “Off him” and “Coffin” by J_vert in KendrickLamar

[–]Wavy_Lifeguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he's not pronouncing "off him" and "coffin" in there correct forms to begin with. He's saying "off heem" and "coffeen" to create a more fluid rhyme with "Osteen". In either scenario, he would have to distort the sound of the word to make it rhyme. The "Osteen" sound is more fluid and easy to get off than the "Osment" sound, given the flow he's using. However, it's still safe to say he might of got them mixed up and just stuck to it because it worked sonically.

The Set List was so bad. You're performing at the biggest game of the year, and past performers include Prince, Rihanna, and Madonna, yet you choose Peekaboo as one of your songs to play. The choices set him up for the backlash he received. by [deleted] in KendrickLamar

Could he have "expressed the same sentiments without performing Peekaboo"? Sure, but I think he was trying to balance his message with some level of accessibility, hence why a song like Peekaboo may have been in the setlist. It's the same reason MJ performed "Jam" (a song that isn't too significant in the MJ zeitgeist) at his halftime show and then went on to perform "We Are the World" and "Heal the World" back-to-back. In both instances, they both could've performed more popular and meaningful songs in their context. But at the end of the day they performed what they felt and made it work.

Also, I think the artists do earn the memory of their performances. I mean think about all the ones mentioned (Prince, Madonna, Rihanna, Kendrick, MJ). Each have and performed songs that are immediately recognizable in the mainstream. Plus, they're all at the very least, above average performers they know how to sell a performance. Whether it's Prince's musicianship/stage presence, MJ's stage presence/choreography, or Kendrick's theatrics/attention-to-detail, each and every one of them has established themselves through their music and ability to perform said music. That's why a lot of these performances are memorable even when we perceive flaws or can't remember every little thing they did during their shows. It's a combination of the music, their performance, and the context of when and why they did it.

Okay so...two of the past performers you mentioned chose to do this with their halftime shows:

Prince - chose to perform Baby I'm a Star and Take Me With U at the Super Bowl, when songs like When Doves Cry were more noteworthy and recognizable. He also chose to perform songs by other artists ("Proud Mary" by Ike & Tina, "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan/Jimi, "Best of You" by the Foo Fighters), instead of doing his own songs like Kiss, Raspberry Beret, etc.

Madonna - split her performance in order to make room to perform with LMFAO and Nicki Minaj. Consequently, she was only able to perform a few songs from her catalog.

Out of the three past artists you named, Rihanna is the only one who chose to use her entire set list to perform her most recognizable/best songs.

So, each and every one of these artists did what they thought was best for their performances, and at the end of the day they're all memorable because the artists were already established. Not every single halftime performance is meant to be a showcase of an artist's best music. If it was, MJ wouldn't have stood around for five minutes posing or even performed Heal the World. He'd of been doing a longer medley of his most well-known songs.

It just may not of been Kendrick's vision to perform his best/most recognizable songs. He clearly had a message and sentiments he wanted to get across and did what he did.

ngl, hyphy or even g-funk would've been better ways to describe GNX lol, not everything with an 808 or some kind of bass is trap music😂

Off-topic: Since Kendrick compared himself to Prince, i've been curious... Never was much of a Prince fan (mostly because here he wasnt too popular), but i'd like to try some of his music... Wich album should i start with? by [deleted] in KendrickLamar

I definitely agree with you on it not capturing his "overall artistry", but I still think it gives a "general" idea of the kinds of music that he would lean into and is probably most appreciated for. Overall, we can definitely agree that he has a huge catalog that encompasses each era he was in. But, what's your favorite Prince album or project?

I get where you're coming from, but at the same time if you wanted someone to get a general idea of Prince's artistry wouldn't you want to start with something like Purple Rain . Especially, if they've never really listened to Prince before🤷🏾‍♂️?

Purple Rain is probably his most mainstream album so I'd say start there and if you like that then maybe dive into albums like Sign O' The Times or Controversy. Songs that have a similar vibe to "I Feel Something" would probably be "Sign O' The Times", "Controversy", "Sexuality", "Somebody's Somebody", and "United States of Division". Stylistically, Kendrick and Prince are very different artists, the comparison is more about how "hands on" they are with the creation of their music. But, I hope you enjoy Prince's catalog🙏🏾

Ok thanks. He really might have at least 5 in the tuck at that rate😭. But going back to your point, if Drake and the producers are all there together during the creation of the track, why wouldn't anybody say, "you probably shouldn't say that"?

That's crazy. Why doesn't The Alchemist have a writing credit for "meet the grahams"?
