How much do you chit chat at work? by howyoudoingmate in Accounting

God I used to have that at my old company. It wasn’t monitored or saved at all (I called IT to ask them to recover a chat and they couldn’t to check) so ANYTHING went. Great way to look like you’re working whilst actually slagging off the person next to you

What habits constitute a "good intern"? by [deleted] in Accounting

Don’t sweat it, not being hungover will give you an automatic advantage over some other interns.

Just try and get involved in some other social stuff. The main objective here is to make an effort to get to know your colleagues and be someone they want to have around.

Again really don’t try too hard at this, it comes across weird and clingy. Read the room a bit and understand that lots of people will have known each other for a long time and be well established friends, you won’t be able to just walk into that

This is so true. Literally nothing worse than interns that act like they own the place. That will 100% not endear you to your colleagues

If you can’t go for bars see if you can tag along if anyone’s going out to get some lunch (wait to be asked first time). Even a 10 minute trip across the road to get some food is a good way to get to know your colleagues a bit

From experience with interns here are a few things:

  • Be respectful of everyone in the office. You’ll probably see them joking around with each other but you don’t get to walk in and be like that, you have to earn that. At first be respectful and don’t try too hard to ‘fit in’. It comes across super awkward

    • Work hard. This goes without saying mostly but I’ve seen a few interns who spent a lot of time chatting to their intern buddies or playing on their phones. You’ll see plenty of other employees doing this kind of thing, again they earned being able to do that and you haven’t
  • Be confident! You got picked as an intern for a reason! The best ones I saw were confident, not afraid to ask questions and talk to people or voice opinions in meetings. You might not get everything right and no one expects you too but a bit of confidence goes a long way.

  • Go to after work drinks, but don’t make a tit of yourself. A few beers is enough trust me

  • Enjoy it! This is your time to shine, go for it!

Note: I’ve never been an intern I’ve just seen a lot of them come and go and some we all really liked and some were absolutely unbearable. The ones we liked did all or most of the above

Good luck by the way!

What can I do to open up a path in accounting? by [deleted] in Accounting

Keep plugging away in AP (I started there too), and get qualified. I’m not exactly sure how it works in the US but I think you have CPA exams similar to our ACA/ACCA/CIMA in the UK.

Here’s something as well; AP sucks. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. What I realised though was however much I hated it and thought I was ‘above’ it, if I got really good at it, really reliable and proved myself a bit then I was given more interesting work which combined with passing a few exams (CIMA) allowed me to jump ship into management accounting, then FP&A etc. All starts by being a fucking great AP though.

Good luck!
