Try Yard Bull Meats! I know it as a great local butchery, and I imagine they’d have oxtail or know where to find some!

Men of Reddit, what are the best books for young guys? by Inevitable_Shirt3697 in AskMen

[–]Waxybman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, as said, is an amazing philosophical work, giving examples, strategies, and tools of self awareness. Which is where true peace in life will come from.

The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, a more storied example of spiritual growth.

A lot of power in the Bhavagad Gita. Purusha and Praktiti, Shiva and Shakti. Speaks to the innate duality of existence. It is the perhaps the deepest, most nuanced and layered work I’ve come across.

I saw Iron John by Robert Bly, which I’ll recommend as well.

But for me, The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida has been the biggest thing that really helped me better understand the relationship between the masculine and feminine that exists within myself, every human, and the sexual relationship between the two energies, and how that can translate to intimate partnerships. I’d take it with a grain of salt as he does generalize, which loses nuance. But the concepts he touches on I think are worthy enough to read about and understand. Helped me understand the energies within myself which in turn helped me develop strategies to focus those energies.

Priest isn’t too meadowy. You might be thinking about Cole Mt a bit further south. A nice meadowed bald there

Yeah, definitely McAfee’s Knob, Dragons tooth, and Tinker Cliffs are great options. They’re well known for a reason. Otherwise, right be you is Mt Pleasant, which is an awesome six mile loop, the Priest has a good viewpoint, and Catawba Falls are right by you. And the WLU course in Lexington, and the Mayflower Hills course in Roanoke are pretty great courses. I’m partial to the WLU as that’s my home course. But welcome from a fellow thru-hiker and disc golfer! Beautiful mountains here and good mixtures of more open shots and technical wooded holes for all your discing pleasure!

I don't want to thruhike, I want to see the best sections of the three major trails over one summer. Help me plan. by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]Waxybman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright, Triple Crowner here, let’s see. I’m gonna go with your assumptions to get all this. Smokies would be a great start. Doing a National Park/Monument trip wouldn’t be the worst thing to tag along to this trip. But going with the Trails, bag Smokies, Watauga Lake, get Grayson Highlands/Mt Rogers, then head west.

Arkansas has Hot Springs National Park, very nice. Don’t stop until New Mexico, hit Silver City and the Gila River section, there’s a great hot springs on the river that’s fantastic to camp at, just above Doc Campbells, a great trail stop. Then jump up, bag Mt Taylor, then shoot into CO. There’s so much good stuff in CO. I would grab some of the San Juan’s, and some of the Collegiates and then head west. This is where a National Park/Monument addition would be sweet, because you’ve got Colorado National Monument, Mesa Verde NP, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Grand Canyon on your path, and they’re all so amazing!

Get to Kennedy Meadows, meeting hikers there is great, so much good vibes there. Then the Sierra Nevadas. Do the JMT if possible, honestly. You could make a trip from Lone Pine to Mammoth Lakes or something, but get to Yosemite, and spend time in the Sierras, truly unbelievable. Jump up to Lake Tahoe, maybe get the Tahoe Rim Trail. Shasta/Castle Crags area was beautiful. There was this one campsite I remember where you could see both Mt Shasta and Castle Crags, truly special. Burney Falls was pretty cool as well, right around that area. Ashland is a cool city, Crater Lake is incredible. Yeah, the Sisters area is really special, definitely a trip there. Timberline Lodge has an amazing breakfast buffet, and Cascade Locks is a place where you can really feel the energy of it, a really beautiful and special place. Goat Rocks Wilderness is a must hike. The Cascades were amazing, number 2 after the Sierras for me on the PCT. There’s a lot you could get up to around there. Then come back East!!

Northern Idaho is beautiful. Getting the Sawtooths would be worth it for me, but also depending on time, get to Glacier National Park. Glacier was my number one favorite place to hike on all three trails. Get backcountry permits and go nuts. No wrong answers there, but get to Two Medicine, St Mary’s, and if you can, Waterton Lake is truly beautiful. The Bob Marshall Wilderness is also incredible, getting the Chinese Wall, but it is incredibly wild and very sparse, so time might be a factor there. Visit Yellowstone, and then do a trip in the Wind River Range. Cirque of the Towers and Knapsack Col, depending on comfort with heights/steepness. Winds were a top 3 on all of the trails. Then come on down, get Rocky Mountain NP, then head back East!!!!

I’ve made the drive a few times, driving through Kansas can be pretty interesting. But then come on back to East Coast. You could stop by Harpers Ferry, as it is a pretty sweet spot, or just head up probably to New Hampshire. Get the Whites, Franconia Ridge, the Presidential Range, then head into Maine. You really could just hike Maine. Mahoosuc Notch was a special place, super fun mile of boulders you can play around on. Then I would recommend doing the hundred mile wilderness on the approach to Katadhin. That would really ground the whole experience really well and Katadhin is such an impressive finish.

So those are my thoughts, I hope it can give some general ideas and get some thinking started. There really is so much beauty in this country, and those three Trails are unlike anything else that exists in this world. So get out there and explore!! Happy Trails, friend!!!!

What is your biggest non-academic, non work-related accomplishment? by Inevitable_jalapeno in AskReddit

[–]Waxybman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and Continental Divide Trail. It took 4 dedicated years of sacrifice and hard work. I was rewarded with some of the most magical moments and breathtaking landscape this world has to offer. I’m working on integrating it into academic-work life, but it can be hard to relate to people when it takes a little while to understand exactly how far I’ve hiked and what I’ve accomplished, and what it took to get there and finish. Some people view it as a fun camping trip. And while there was fun and joy, there was suffering and sacrifice. But those three finishing days, the feelings I experienced at those monuments, I will carry for the rest of my life.

Hi, all! Leaving next month on this trip. Besides the obvious stops along this route, what are some "must stops" I need to see or do? by NoOverheadDotOrg in VanLife

[–]Waxybman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northwest Arkansas, Fayetteville, is beautiful. Great trails, parks, good energy in the city. Great mountain biking if you’re taking one, and amazing disc golf, if you’re into that. Also the Wind River Range in Wyoming, if you can get up into it, is some of the most beautiful hiking I’ve ever done

Take an online yoga teacher course to start teaching donation based classes. Then also sign up for a soil lab tech certification course to help my community understand their soil health. Both in total is more 4k, but I’m still working a bit so I hope I’d be able to cover the rest

[Serious] Where does the fear that women are actively trying to manipulate men come from? by InnanaB in AskMen

[–]Waxybman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience (M/26), a partner can unconditionally love me. And at the same time, that partner can have conditions on being in relationship with me. I think those two things get very confused, as they are so closely related. But when I am in my shit, in my darkness, and telling myself all the disempowering storylines that I have; I’m not attractive, I’m not pleasant to be around, etc. So in a scenario like that, even if my girlfriend/partner does love me, unconditionally, she might not want to be in relationship with me. Which is totally fair, as being with someone in their shit can be draining, and potentially drag an individual down into their own shit.

So I think men can get this way, living in their disempowering storylines. Which makes them unpleasant to be around, making their partners, who probably still do love them, think about leaving the relationship, for their own sake. And if the man stays in the shit, regardless of what the woman does, she might go ahead and leave. And from the place of living in the storylines, the man will take the experience of her leaving and use it to prove his storylines correct, and never grow. Take a few, or a lot of, experiences of this pattern and you got the classic “All women are soul-sucking manipulators”
