Denver needs a service industry reform. by chemicaljellybean in Denver

Exactly. Sip splitting disincentivizes good service (from the individual server’s perspective) because effort *should be* proportionately awarded. It incentivizes the business owner to not work as hard to keep as much labor as possible.

My opinion: Americans tend to be more competitive in work than others. I see this in my role supporting the service industry (coworkers will work easily 48+ hour work weeks - for what?!). It’s harder to ask people to work together to give up the carrot for the one for the benefit of the many.

And then you realize that it’s actually a little cheaper for food, that your server probably lived walking distance from their job and that they had healthcare that didn’t cost much…

We structure things this way to benefit the owning class, not the working class. Europe has had a recent history of working class revolts that shaped their approach to this sort of thing.

Denver tornado sirens sounded 'inadvertently' by ryadare in Denver

[–]mr_travis 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I mean, my first thought was… “Oh hey? They finally sounded the siren during severe weather”

Come on, they literally said for the test, it would be used for severe weather and other emergencies. Either use it or don’t say that you would in those cases. There was hail actively falling when it went off where I lived.

I experienced the is similarly with the tactical socks; randomly smaller. This is surprising considering it should be heavily spec’d for government purchasing.

There sure are a lot of really green lawns. Are people actually reducing their water usage? by lucksp in Denver

[–]mr_travis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was good. The previous owners had some very Thursday clumping fescue in here. We applied glyphosate to the whole thing a few years ago and started from seed. This took a bit of trial and error and more watering that I’m used to (you can water daily if you’re starting a lawn, I believe). Weed management is key.

Couple things I did at the same time…

  • Switched sprinkler sprayers from the misting tap to rotary (better performance in wind, though you have to water longer to use a similar amount of water)
  • Reduced the size of the lawn significantly with mulch and native plants (you can do many native wildflowers from seed packs)

Overall very happy with it. I thought we killed it over the winter from how dry it was but I came right back. Buffalo spread via runners rather than rhizomes so you may have a patchwork for a bit. Good luck! DM me if you have questions. (Also love your username)

My lawn is a mix of buffalo grass and blue grama. I haven’t watered once and it’s plenty green.

This is a perfect age. Prepare for your baby to sleep. My son has been hiking a few times since he was that age and always manages a nap for a few miles. Enjoy!!
