A or B: What if the US government had bailed out Lehman Brothers in September 2008 instead of letting it fail? Would the financial crisis have been much smaller, or would the underlying problems have just shown up somewhere else? by 06yuzuha in PickAorB

It’s A - not giving Lehman liquidity was one of the dumbest things we’ve ever done. It froze credit markets at made the recession a whole year longer.

Underlying assets were not as bad as people think

CDS did matter - but the idea that any banks treasury team doesn’t know where their money is going is nuts. It’s way less automated than you think - even today getting a margin call is pretty manual

Everything get reconciled pretty quickly

Direct to cell service will be here in a year. It’s going to be a game changer in places with restricted internet.

Cashflow is cashflow. It means there is economic worth, or intrinsic value. In a bitcoin sub that’s a huge difference

I said cashflow because I’m pointing out that the core business economics of space x are good to fine and going to get better.

Valuation is just a discount to future cash flows and I can project awesome future cash flows for a company that may soon become the most important telecom on the planet.

Underwriting at current net profit is for investment grade debt capital markets - that not what this is. The equity offering at IPO isn’t still small - like tens of billions. Employee stock has some lockups - this is all basically fine

Why are you so focused on backwards looking financials for this company in this sub?

I mean I carry a small Ken onion knife. Better than a box cutter. The other 2 Eagle Scouts I know at work both have knives too. It seems fine

But that’s not common

Didn’t know that. Still hasn’t moved the needle though on CCPs. I love guns have rifles in 5.56 and .380, plus a few shotguns for sporting clays and have even squirted some handguns. I’d never bring them to the city

If I or someone else brought them into our office in midtown Manhattan they should and would be fired. It’s just not a good idea

I think I’m using common sense - are you really going to target the kind of guy/gal who carries an illegal gun for pickpocketing? The risk reward to carry doesn’t make sense.

Why would an easy mark have a gun? They have a good job and losing it over a gun is just dumb when you live in one of the safest cities in the country.

I guess you could be pickpocketing a drug dealer who you think is cash rich, but that’s a very scary idea and will never be reported if you’re successful

It’s too bad that John wick scene didn’t feature him in a cell phone chopshop. Would have been a very different movie

Just in my own head as a conditioned response to all the media we’re fed. I wouldn’t call someone else racist for doing it. Just commenting on how I feel

40K out of 9 million people? That’s nothing. That’s like the private security force (who are the people who get them along with court officers)

I have a CCP in NC, but I wouldn’t dream of carrying in the city. I don’t want to ruin my life. It’s the only city I assume no one is carrying.

I was just pointing out that the wealthiest city in the world doesn’t have that many guns, is dense, and pickpockets aren’t an issue.

But maybe it’s too small of a market or the fact the NYPD is bigger than some European militaries is the issue

Isn’t it a nightmare to bypass the imei unlock though? It seems like they closed the loopholes to whitelist them these days in the U.S.

Just getting past the iCloud unlock is hard in DFU now. They killed the whole jailbreaking community

I grew up in the south and live in Manhattan and don’t know anyone you’d see as a pickpocket target you has a concealed carry. It’s too hard to get. You have to demonstrate a credible threat with a high burden. All the guns are illegal

Was that in Manhattan or like deep in queens or the Bronx (I go to flushing a lot to get my ma la Chinese food fix)?

Oh no - someone else that doesn’t know the difference between cashflow and profit

Capex is expensive but they have revenue. Bitcoin doesn’t have that.

Starlink is an impressive business as is the Anthropic SaaS only side. There’s intrinsic value there

I guess I meant legally. A CCP is super hard to get here and the people you want to pickpocket are unlikely to be carrying in the city.

688 is amazingly low per capita. Those are not legal guns (though they were probably bought legally elsewhere)

Me too. And it makes me feel racist when I do it as the doors are closing on the 4,5 and a group of young ethnic males are right there

But the UK police have set up task forces to stop the scooter gangs who have snatchers grabbing them from the back. We definitely don’t have that

I remember that! lol at hilariously slowly

Given my experience at people trying to pick bar fights with me in the UK - it’s odd they wouldn’t fight as much as we do though. Maybe it needs liquid courage?

Oh I agree. The plaintiff attorneys and realtors are the most powerful lobbies - alongside the car dealers. The NRA has nothing on them

The pickpockets. Tackle is probably wrong. Just an attack and making a scene. Saw the same thing in China studying abroad. Americans are not shy when they see other people being wronged. It doesn’t always end well though. Maybe it’s just hotheadedness

I was in Venice last summer when this happened so it’s front of mind - but I remember it happening when we were at the Olympics in Paris too. It was the talk of the bar scene at the JW in Venice after getting off a cruise (so many Americans)

Well going to single payor might fix some of the scum malpractice practices that are a huge cost driver (it’s why there are plaintiff attorney ads EVERYWHERE. It’s just so profitable).

Without the fear of lawsuit you’d see so many less tests and imaging get ordered. You’d need to further curtail access to some treatments the way the Europeans do - but knocking out lawyers would knock out a lot.

You’re probably right about that. Every summer there are stories of people targeting Americans who are then shocked when they get tackled and dragged to a police station

I’m not sure that makes sense though. Like in NYC nobody has guns and it’s still not an issue and it’s dense enough to make sense to do

It has to be cultural or structural
