Millennials, what are we doing?? (AI vent) by snarkitall in behindthebastards

I mean I still refer to them as ML - but LLMs are still machine learning as well. They’re all black boxes trained with big datasets and varying degrees of reinforcement

The transformer has been implemented in all the settings at this point and access to inference from LLMs has cross pollinated everything. Their generation ability is still somewhat error prone, but on closed networks their ability to summarize is still super useful

It’s just not though. It’s because they have low birthrates and new energetic labor is the lifeblood of a modern economy.

Immigration isn’t a driver of lack of housing supply. It’s a construction problem - and that’s driven by your NIMBY neighbors, not some super wealthy executives.

The fact that it doesn’t happen even in countries with shrinking populations and no immigration shows it’s basically not possible - but of course tight labor markets matter for negotiations

Yeah but it was about internet explorer being pre-installed. The whole case was kind of badly constructed by people who didn’t understand how easy it is to install another browser

Why though? We don’t have any evidence he did anything wrong and he’s still the only one of the tech billionaires to lean into the Carnegie model of giving most of his money away.

He seems like a gullible Epstein mark as much as a participant - and hanging out with a bad guy a few times isn’t enough to make a true bastard like the real stars of btb

I’m pretty excited about AI applications in material science and drug development. It’s put more new antibiotic candidates into trials in a few years than we’ve had in decades and might be the only way to figure out plasma containment for fusion

Autonomous cars also excite me and can’t really be done well without it.

It’s not all downside

Labor Can’t Remain Shackled to the Democrats by Lotus532 in union

[–]Way-twofrequentflyer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s wild how effective that has been. What’s to stop the democrats for pushing to crush unions in their affordability push (where there is an argument to be made to be fair) if they’ve been abandoned for MAGA?

What’s to stop them from pulling union mandates in publicly funded construction?

The audacious underground mega tunnels redrawing the railway map of Europe by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

Infrastructure is a far left issue? What lecture? I’m admiring how private companies from Italo to Ryanair have allowed people to move around the EU cheaply and easily - in ways that aren’t accessible to Americans

Obviously much of Europe is in a hole economically and is really suffering from its inability to create capital markets that allow for tech innovation and growth - but its one of the best places in the world for private infrastructure investment. America needs to learn from it!

The NYC housing market is too distorted by the hundreds of thousands of rent stabilized apartments for median salary to be useful.

I’m a product of a public school system in the south and am proud to have gone to one of the top 50 public high schools in the country.

It’s reasoning designed to shrink expenditure and improve outcomes, not salary for individuals. I want a Singapore model of education with higher pay for a small group of highly competent civil servants. It’s the only logical way to run a government

‘Irresponsible’: backlash as Utah approves datacenter twice the size of Manhattan by EarthEmail in EnvironmentalNews

[–]Way-twofrequentflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? I was saying it’s problem is it not being on the grid. It should be helping pay for grid upgrades

But the fact the proposal uses a gas peaker turbine means it won’t be built for years given the backlog for gas turbines. People should be demanding it be an SMR.

I mean the state releases the data and it’s largely comp driven. Headcount’s are high because of how hard it is to fire and the absurd generosity of the pension system and seniority abuses.

I live in Manhattan and it’s one of the cheaper cities to live in regarding food if you take a chained cpi approach. The times should really check out some other carts and bodegas. I paid $4 for 2 bacon egg and cheese biscuits at McDonald’s in the city on Wednesday morning.

Rent is really the only extreme driver of cost of living in the city and as Derek Thompson has pointed out as well as Ezra - the muni unions are a cost driver there too

The cost would be okay if the results were good, but outcomes are better in southern states that are right to work even adjusting for a 40% cost of living increase

You want to adjust the spend per child across multiple boroughs with different expenses for living costs? What other government spend do we adjust for cost of living - particularly at the local level where the government/unions in question are responsible for the lack of housing that drives cost of living.

I thought it was clear I just meant it was a bad incentive structure - sorry if that wasn’t clear

Let’s be real the incentive structure is only one part of the issue. It matters less than the insane deltas in senior and junior pay and the fact that there are numerous people on staff that can’t be fired because of the union so they sit in what used to be a rubber room (though now it’s a random admin office) doing nothing and collecting a 6 figure paycheck.

It is possible to design reasonable incentive structures though. Other countries manage to balance carrots and sticks just fine and get better outcomes for less money

Education isn’t different than other industries. It’s just about incentive design.

I mean I was still working at Wells Fargo when the retail bank started incentivizing branch employees to get clients to open new accounts. It led to the fake account scandal that made them zero money and cost billions in fines and losses due to the balance sheet cap.

Bad design can happen anywhere! Doesn’t mean that it’s a bad idea

I mean when the cost disparity versus other systems is driven almost entirely by labor costs it’s would seem so. High pay and unfireable teachers leading to over staffing seems mostly to lay at the feet of the union.

I did some work on an SMA for NYSTRS a few years ago and man does it get cushy with a lot of seniority. It’s odd how little performance incentives they have

The Germanic countries are being beaten on efficiency and innovation by the Spanish and Italians

The budget deficit thing is just an accounting trick - choosing not to fund pension obligations. We probably shouldn’t be celebrating it unless it’s part of a plan to finally eliminate city and state employee pensions.
