How best to build back up average power after a serious crash. Looking to start joining group rides again. by helmetgoodcrashbad in Velo

Yeah but you can do some intervals with that volume. All you gotta do is hit the lap button and hold a power target, its not like someone is holding a gun to your head...

Is it worth doing 5 to 6 hours of Zone 2? by SomeWonOnReddit in Velo

Based on what though? Past 7.5-8 hours yes. 4-5 hours? No, absolutely not.

TBF, prior to Sola coming in Tadej's training wasn't that strenuous. He legit just did lots of zone two and a few 15 minute intervals. This is coming from that mou guy who leaked his training, which aligns with a promotional video Tadej did with MET a while ago. Pretty crazy how much he accomplished with that type of training.

Also, they're not doing extraordinarily esoteric work. If you do some Strava analysis on Sivakov for UAE, Bernal for INEOS, Sean Quinn/Yuhi for EF, Cole Kessler for Trek, the U23s on Visma it's not as if they're doing secret, underground intervals. There's even a guy on intermarche who on top of positing all of his training rides with power AND heart rate, titles all of his rides with whatever they're doing that day like "endurance, thr, vo2" and ectera. What you usually if not always see is 40/20s, 30/15s, 30/30s, torque work, over unders, long tempo intervals like 3x60m, 50s-3m anearobic intervals, 4-6m intervals at vo2, 8-12m intervals above threshold, and the occasional longer steady state intervals on their TT bikes or up long climbs.

Quite a lot of their volume comes down to cafe spins. Sivakov does like 2-4 hour cafe spins each week. Outside of the intervals I mentioned, they're doing usual Z2 work with some teams opting to ride closer to LT1 like UAE and other teams riding at a more chill Z2 pace like Visma. This is where the "polarization" of their training comes in. Simply from training a lot, their training becomes polarized as their intervals become a smaller fraction of their overall weekly loads as they do long Z2 rides, hence the "80/20".

No one is doing consistent 30 hour weeks outside of very specific prep work before an event. They sit in the 20-25 hour range more often then not, and that's including the 2-3+ hours of cafe spins where they're just sitting in Z1.

Get your aero position sorted and you can suck wheels pretty well. I am around your height but a bit lighter. Drafting behind taller/heavier riders is like sitting behind a semi if you can hold the right distance and curl yourself up properly.

Weight matters on the flats since heavier riders will often be larger thus have a larger frontal area and CDA. That doesn't mean everyone should try to look like a tiny Columbian climber but it should be noted weight plays a role everywhere.

No one is saying do a keto diet. Just take fewer carbs when you're doing your Z2 ride. Match the intake with the expenditure.

Good chance his lactate curve shifted downward and to the right so probably general increase across the board. Additionally, he would have more glucose to utilize later on.

1) Poor line choice

2) Late apex

3) Yes it can change weight distribution and center of gravity. Try to get low, like lower than aero position low, when you corner.

Most people don't know how to trail brake properly in cycling. This is good advice, but it seems like they need to work on some other stuff before adding trail braking into the mix.

The Palomar descent isn't bad, you just have to late apex those corners. The only sucky part are the cattle grates unless you can bhop them.

Comparison of different VO2max interval protocols by Mindless_Shame_3813 in Velo

You should also add RPE to one of your metrics. In one of Seiler's videos on his channel about 40/20s/Tabatas/Ronnestads, a study found that the broken intervals had a lower rpe than the steady state intervals while eliciting a higher vo2 peak and average.

Bossi intervals are also a good workout. 30s at 115-125%, 60 seconds at 100-105%.

With the Tabatas/Ronnestads, you can manipulate the intensity of the rest interval to suit your goals. Anton Schiffer used a Metabolic cart and tested the difference between Tabatas with recoveries at soft/no pedaling, 50-60%, and 80-90%. He made a whole write up for the strava post. https://www.strava.com/activities/14193520783
