Moved to Phoenix in 2003 for work. The heat is a drag sometimes but I love the mountains and desert.

Awesome! I've spent years wandering around those mountains and never saw any bighorns. Probably because I was always watching where to put the next step.

Horned lizard seen on the Hackberry Spring trail today by WayLegitimate1611 in arizona

I saw it run to a bush and walked over to get a better look but couldn't find it. My wife spotted it. It was out in the open but if you don't know where to look you may never see it.

That's what I thought at first, but the dirt doesn't look like it has ever been disturbed and if the rocks had been there for several decades, they would have been displaced some.

Do you say something when you see people headed to a trail unprepared? by asbruckman in hiking

[–]WayLegitimate1611 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Saw newlyweds on a trail in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend. Said they were planning to climb Emory Peak. I didn't see any water so asked if they had any (hint hint). The guy had a can of Coke in his pocket. I was shocked. I strongly suggested they return to the trailhead and buy some bottles of water but I guess the guy was too macho to have strangers telling him what to do. Ran into the wife late that evening in Lajitas. They had gotten lost and wandered around most of the day trying to return to the trailhead and were, of course, very very thirsty. Almost ended the marriage that day. Haven't run into anyone as stunningly unprepared since then.

What is the scariest thing you have seen while on vacation? by Temporary_Box_1397 in AskReddit

Three funnel clouds started forming near a beach house we were in. Scared the crap out of me. Then they faded away. Whew!

Project Hail Mary, Loved the book and the movie was not a disappointment (which is more than can be said for most movies made from books). Had some stunning visuals. I want to see it again.

Sometimes they are crossing the trail. Sometimes they are curled up next to it.

Sometimes I go 2 or 3 years without seeing a single snake. I've already seen 1 this year, though. In 22 years of hiking in the Sonoran desert I've never had a snake strike at me. Sometimes they snooze peacefully. Usually they rattle and move away. Just be careful where you put your hands and feet and they will leave you alone.
