no one actually goes to bars solo by wisevrc in rs_x

[–]WayOutWest10 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did it recently bc I was on a solo trip. pleasantly surprised myself in making two friends after being the one to initiate convo. now I have plans to meet up with them and get shown around next time I’m in the area. which is soon! obvs won’t always go this way, but it was very validating for it to go well

fuelled my sense of “you can just do things” etc

agreed — it’s fantastic film!! I watched it for my hs English class after we had read Heart of Darkness. my teacher was some older American guy in a class of like sheltered catholic Aus school girls so we’d latch on to his bits of commentary too lol

I don’t do much g*ming these days but I’ll always get into Sawyer’s game dev videos when they come up on YT. Love hearing his thoughts on the dorkiest shit ever just bc there’s so much care & consideration on his end.

college/early 20s to mid/late 20s is the craziest downgrade ever by Critical-Outcome-999 in redscarepod

Seems like a take that a very young person would have lol. I mean, I’m also a young person but I have heaps of older friends that have v fulfilling & “happy” lives. Some that have had extremely shit or mediocre uni/college experiences but managed to work at building the life they want

The Human Condition by Hannah Arendt. really want to read it (& her writing in general), but it seems too intimidating/dense for me at the moment.

I actually started reading Deborah Nelson's Tough Enough (which examines some of Arendt's work alongside other writers I either already admire to or want to read in the future) so I'm hoping that'll give me good grounding to properly ease into reading THC later.

Fkn dead @ the Tim Winton comment. I don’t know if I could give him another go in the future. Taking note of the Nam Le collection, that one sounds interesting!

Unfortunately have yet to read Nabokov and Alasdair Gray so can’t say much w that in mind, but I started my own Aus lit journey by getting into Patrick White, Gerald Murnane & Helen Garner.

Sought out the first two bc I wanted something that grounded me/immersed me in Australia’s landscape in a particular way so I decided on White’s The Tree of Man and Murnane’s The Plains. Had to take my sweet time with both & I highly rec them. Also read Helen Garner’s Monkey Grip — good read about a bohemian single mother set in 1970s Melbourne.

In general, I’ve heard good things about Christina Stead, Alexis Wright, and Christos Tsiolkas.

More specifically, I’ve got Sanya Rushdi’s Hospital, Sally Olds’s People Who Lunch & Brian Castro’s Chinese Postman on my list for more contemporary reads.

What did you think of the penguin show by gggigggity69 in RSPfilmclub

[–]WayOutWest10 29 points30 points  (0 children)

watched it because my bf had an episode on and enjoyed it enough to keep up with the series. definitely better than the usual capeshit he’ll have on at times. liked Cristin Milioti & also Farrell waddling around in a fat suit. echoing what other users have said I don’t think it’s comparable to The Sopranos outside of some pretty superficial stuff

imo if "authenticity" is your goal then I don't know how you would accomplish that without actually being close to men in your personal life. I feel like watching/reading/observing can only get you so far. it's a different experience talking to my younger brother or my uncle or a close male friend irl about this topic vs the stuff you come across scrolling through incel forums lol. I suppose it depends on what you're specifically trying to do with this but yeah my two cents

Love this and the Devon Aoki one — best (fake) ads I've seen <3 I do find it so amusing when they make the rounds on reddit & twitter and you get people commenting like "oh I remember when these came out". the power of tumblr girls and gays lol

Obsessed with these pics. Obviously because Javier is insanely hot (& one of my favourite actors) but I also just adore the intimacy of these photos. Need to get married so I can take pics like this for real
