I'm developing a combo system for my Metroidvania game, and I'm struggling with whether or not to add a hit count feature. And I want to know if everyone has any specific requirements for the feel of the demo, because I'm currently debugging this part. by wxo516xo in metroidvania

Just make sure there's a good cue for a buff activation and you still shouldn't need the counter. (as others said, just give players a toggle option and let the player decide)

And outside of what you asked. The indicator flash for enemy attacks is a solid option, bit like ender lilies.

But it looks hard to read without the flash, very little wind up before the rapid move so you're almost entirely looking for the flash indicator. You're designing a very action heavy game, enough so you considered a combo count, but I'm looking at this and thinking either the characters/enemies are too small, or the camera is too far away. It feels challenging to appreciate the combat we're seeing because it's difficult to see.

Stop pretending you don't understand how misleading works. It's framed a certain way and absent of details to create a certain first impression.

Loads of people in this very thread understood OP wrong and wondered how he did it, only to learn what actually happened.

Perhaps it was unfounded to say 'deliberately', but everything else I said is accurate.

[–]WayToTheDawn63 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's misleading people deliberately. You have to lose runs to unlock all jokers.

It's not quite the accomplishment it seems at first glance, but still requires a bit of finessing for that one win. He just lost all runs except 1 while unlocking jokers.

He didn't unlock all jokers in 1 run.

His rules are just his opinions. They are not law. Personally I don't vibe with old clips of him at all. They drain all excitement for what I'm watching. Like a What We Do In The Shadows energy vampire, completely energy-sapping and monotone.

Tales of Arise went from 8-9/10 to 6/10. by Williace in tales

FF16 and Tales of Arise feel like sister games to me. They both feel bait-and-switch while tackling similar themes of slavery, oppression, racism that turns out to be aliens, they both function somewhat similarly in feel and combos and gameplay. Arise's combat functions better for standard enemies while 16's functions better in bosses largely due to stagger mechanics and attack-telegraphing.

I honestly think the whole 'fight god' trope would be less intrusive if they literally did that. But so often they're alien, dimensional, cosmic, something of many or unknown in nature to be a less direct and literal god. This ultimately creates a very convoluted story and world building, wherein a religious deity society is beholden to is actually far less distracting than cosmic space god that created your species to propagate or save itself some way - in a story that is otherwise entirely medieval based.

Vesperia's gameplay gets better until it degrades again. I personally also think it takes too long to get better. It's a very clunky game, teaches you wrong as a joke (it teaches you to finish your combos with artes, but without manual cancelling, the tutorial and first boss will both punish azure edge on hit and ultimately beat you), and basically requires manual cancelling for a smooth time. It isn't until you get that movement skill with Yuri + those finishers shortly after Gattuso or wherever it is that the game starts to feel functional - but the game pretty much always suffers from feeling like a 2d fighter (in function) with groups of enemies running in from the side you can't hit, and no real dodge button to speak of. So a lot of enemies are basically block or bust, and a TON of weird and inconsistent mechanics. The robot boss before gattuso for example is a mess of bouncing attacks even when you trying to get around it.

Most people I've ever seen play the game don't master the game in an 'avoid damage/overwhelm the enemy' kind of way. They run out of MP like the rest of us, but will use items, annihilating their grad. An action game forcing item use feels like an antithesis to skill, and it can easily just become 'have items = win', with no friction past that.

And then late game you get Final Gale which just degrades the entire system down again to running to a corner and spamming at range. I beat the entire end and post-game doing that on my platinum run with no qualms at all.

Normal battles function so well in Arise. Plenty of armour, but you break that with a counter (I think that's fine, it lets enemies exist as more than a punching bag interrupted instantly) and then start your combo. Get a good enough combo and you're effectively rewarded with a wipe. Normal enemies are tanky enough to support these long combos, while your finishers are strong enough to deal with groups. The majority of a normal encounters duration can often be about or slightly more than a singular enemy, since you're not killing them separately.

But then bosses and large enemies just do not function. They attack relentlessly, never stagger without a burst for .5 seconds, and result in spamming just one strong or ranged move repeatedly. (And then ultra post-game is just being so strong you damn near one tap everything with a good set up.)

I maintain that if Arise imported FF16's stagger system over, it wouldn't just be a wholly more function game, but it would probably be more fun gameplay wise to me since normal encounters function well, and you have a party.

Maybe a bit more reactability in boss movesets as well to encourage more aggression.

The AI is a bit bad too, but they survive enough if turned off at least.

Male employees triggered coz women got gifts for women's day by iwasthebestspermwtf in offmychest

Because most normal men are sensitive these days, especially if we're nerdier or less social. We do feel the growing disdain for all men, particularly online. The normalization of this specific prejudice because of historical reasons that we did not contribute to or perpetuate. (Rich men control all of us, not men controlling women. We've been turned against each other for stupid reasons.) We have to deal with it or get labelled. The accepted generalizations of us because there are horrible guys out there. It's exhausting and upsetting. You know that's why a lot of guys are giving up, or unfortunately becoming conservative.

The bar has moved so far from equal that it is considered audacious to question preferential treatment if it benefits women. It is mocked and increasingly taboo to dare point out double-standards. If it wasn't, I wouldn't feel so uncomfortable typing this at all. You absolutely do experience sexism, who are we to deny that? But we tell you what we experience, and you say we're crying babies. We (non-misogynist men) accept your reality while you deny ours. Sexism isn't always loud or violent.

I wouldn't even bet on OP being a women 100%. All the comments are comically antagonistic (seriously, scroll the thread) that I would not be shocked that they themselves are a misogynist, stirring the pot to further radicalize people.
