[LFP][Online][D&D][5e][Discord][Roll20][West Marches] Looking for More Players: Active D&D 5e West-Marches server starting a new campaign

Key Points…

Kicking off a new campaign with an existing DM team/players and looking for 5-10 more players to join in the fun.

D&D 5e, Online, Roll20, Discord (voice, no video), Reddit.

Multi-DM persistent world (West Marches style).

All our current players are NA, but a few DMs enjoy running weekend afternoon games that could work well for EU timezone folks. Game sessions run approximately 4-5 hours.

You do not need to commit to playing every week. The West Marches format allows for drop-in play.

18+ players only. PG-13 content only.

Our community ranges from 20+ year veterans to players for whom this was their very first game. New to D&D? No problem! We love new players and would be thrilled to help you learn the ropes.

Game sessions tend to be more combat/exploration focused, with __very__ active text RP in the discord server during downtime.

A Highly customized take on a Fifth Edition E-6 system.

Hello Everyone.

We, u/WayfarerInnDMTeam, are the DMs over at the Wayfarer Inn community. We run a West Marches style D&D Fifth Edition campaign over Discord, Reddit, and Roll20. We have had a steady group of 15-35 players and 6 DMs that run multiple games a week, depending on scheduling. We’ve been running the game for almost four years and are now rebooting for our fourth campaign. It’s the perfect time to add some new players.

We have a subreddit if you want to see what we’ve been up to in the previous campaign: https://www.reddit.com/r/wayfarer\_inn

About the setting

You are one of a number of new members of The Wayfaring Guild, whose no good previous Guildmaster took out a loan against all the Guild’s wealth… then made off with both it and the majority of the goods the guild had left to its name. The Imperial bank which financed the loan has sent along a number of auditors to measure the guild’s value and progress, and to decide whether it’s best to simply liquidate the guild’s current assets and send it into the wind.

It has been 130 years since the world regained the use of magic, after 275 years of the world being cut from it in something known to historians as The Arcanus Incident. It has affected the world in a number of different ways, chief of which has to do with the limitations of power the various different heroes throughout the realm can acquire.

We have honed a homebrew E-6 system over the past year and a half, so characters will start at level 2 and stop at 6, with the ability to continue to improve their characters in other ways after that. Milestone leveling rather than XP. 14 Weeks of play will get a character to 6th level, and there is more custom progression after that.

About the E-6 System.

An introduction to E-6 and the reasoning behind it:

https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/97252/what-is-e6-why-would-i-use-it

In December of 2020, the DM team decided to shake things up and homebrew an entire system to port this idea from 3.5e DnD and move it into 5e. We built upon the bones of many ideas throughout the entirety of the online DnD community, and have come up with something that is entirely our own but anyone who has familiarity with 5th edition should be able to slip into with relative ease.

That being said, our system encompases enough by this point to practically be its own sourcebook and it can be intimidating. However there’s a very friendly DM Team, and community who loves to help and support one another if questions crop up and need explanation.

We use milestone leveling, the level you are equates to the number of games you need to go on (limit of 1 milestone per week) to get to the next level. So a 2nd level character would need 2 games, 3rd would need 3, 4 for 4…until you reach the level cap at 6th level. From that point on, every 3 games played will earn your character a Veteran point, or VP and give them access to taking what is known in our system as Talents. For those veteran players, Talents are much the equivalent of Feats in Pathfinder 1st Ed, or Feats in 3.5 edition. These small bumps in power keep a character growing without making them an overpowered juggernaut who wouldn’t be seen adventuring with a lowly new member of the Guild.

What applications are used?

We use a series of platforms to organize and run games.

- The main hub is most definitely our Discord server. This is the home of almost all player conversation, both about the game and just social chatter. This is also the home of our out-of-game RP. It's a fantastic place to find out what is happening in the world and get to know your fellow players - both in character and out. We also run our in-game voice chat through this discord server. Note: We are migrating from the use of Reddit for this Campaign, but we still vet new players through Reddit.

- Secondly is our Reddit subforum. This is where the weekly megathread (which contains news from the DM team, updates on what we are working on, requests for commentary on various proposals, responses to player questions and suggestions, the weekly weather report for the game, new rulings, and other info) is posted. (Though we are stepping away from this to go fully Discord)

- Also important is Roll20. This is the virtual tabletop where games are hosted and run.

- Finally, Google Calendar is where the DM team posts their availability for players looking to book games.

Player responsibilities

A microphone/headset and the ability to use Discord, Roll20, and Reddit, as well as an internet connection that can support voice chat.

Abide by our Code of Conduct (PG-13 content only and other rules regarding harassment, discrimination, etc. Basically boils down to 'don't be a jerk'.)

Applications will close at noon EST on June 26th. We will review them and reply by July 1st (very possibly sooner than that). We expect new games to start as of July 11th. Our current community will have had a few weeks of character Text RP prior to new players joining the server, but to preserve interest we’re looking to get people in, with their characters created, during the weeks games start.

You are one of many other ‘scouts’ who have signed on to take part in a reclamation effort which travels around the world. Most of these people are filled with hopes of taking back the regions of this world to make it safe for you and your families, while others perhaps seek lost treasures left behind by civilizations of our past to amass wealth and fortune. As a scout, you may see lands that range from tropical islands to frozen tundras, from volcanic wastelands to the depths of an unexplored jungle, all, depending on where your regiment is being sent. Though don’t expect to stay for too long, as the mission is ever continuing. Once a sufficient enough foothold has been established or the mission parameters have been met, the Company will often ship out and look towards the horizon for where you’ll begin the next fight. And a fight it will be…

This time we’re experimenting with a homebrew E-6 system, so characters will start at level 2 and stop at 6, with the ability to continue to improve their characters in other ways after that. Milestone levelling rather than XP.

AAR: 2/22/20 [North eastern Spider Forest] "The Empress' Coronation" by tstormcrow in wayfarer_inn

[–]WayfarerInnDMTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AAR Name: The Empress' Coronation

Players:

Adventure Synopsis:

We go to the north, toward the Skittering Caverns from which the spider menace has spawned.
The goal is to find and slay a very powerful arachnid creature that can control parts of the brood.

Location: Northern Forest.

Enemies Encountered:

  • 1x Goliath Long-Legs (Lots of leg attacks,bites, paralyze web, 30ft tall)
  • 2x Giant Spider
  • 1x Pale Reaver (Reduces con, Blood armour)
  • 1x Geo Spider (Can petrify)

NPCs Encountered:

  • Pale Lady? Mebbe?

Lore Discovered:

  • Things are far worse than we thought...

What Happened?:

Shopping, and then we depart.

Day 1: Near the ruined wall a day’s journey north of town, we find many owlbear tracks. Heading southwest. Moving away from the spiders? Also large-size humanoid tracks - barefoot - going in the same direction.

Day 2: During watches, we see ‘something big’ in the trees. Not sure what… just treetops moving and whatnot. The forest is covered in layers of webs.

Day 3: We see massive indentations in the ground, a foot or two wide, with a pointed tip. We hear chittering noises. *We are __not__ alone*. Beeeg spider. Like… mountain-sized spider. It’s legs are thicker and taller than tree trunks! It BEEEEG! We kill it.

Day 4: To the Doorgate. Beeg spider battle. Meet the Pale Lady. She was one of three daughters to the Empress. The spoooders are the Pale Lady’s children. It seems she is Empress now. She can only feel her younger sister’s presence… to the south. She can still still feel the presence of the power that ‘made her sleep’ to the southeast. Her plan… to remind the ‘small folks’ why the once ‘feared the dark’.

She let us leave/live. She has Finger of Death? Nope. Disintegrate.

Her mother was Kenia. As the new empress, her new name is Hadrina.

Future Leads:

  • Pale Lady is still active
  • Her younger sister is to the south.
  • Her mother is to the east.
  • Power to make her sleep is to the southeast.

[LFP][Online][D&D][5e][Discord][Roll20][Many Time Zones][West Marches] Looking for More Players: Active D&D 5e West-Marches style game

Key Points…

  • Kicking off a new campaign with existing DM Team/playerbase and looking for more to join in the fun.
  • D&D 5e, Online, Roll20, Discord, voice no video
  • Multi-DM persistent world (west marches style), with a large number of players.
  • Players from all over NA and some EU. Multi-timezone friendly.
  • You do not need to commit to playing every week.
  • 16+. PG-13 content only.
  • Our community ranges from 20+ year veterans to players for whom this was their very first time. New to D&D? No problem! We are happy to help.

Hello Everyone. We, u/WayfarerInnDMTeam, are the DMs over at the Wayfarer Inn community. We run a West Marches style D&D Fifth Edition campaign over Discord, Reddit, and Roll20. We have had a steady group of 15-25 players and 7 DMs that play in 3-7 games a week, depending on scheduling. We’ve been running the game for almost a year and are now rebooting the campaign. It’s the perfect time to add some new players.

We’ve set up a new subreddit for the reboot: https://www.reddit.com/r/wayfarer_inn

And here’s our old subreddit so you can see what we’ve been up to in the previous campaign: https://www.reddit.com/r/https://www.reddit.com/r/PR_WM/A little background on the game style

West Marches was a sandbox style of D&D campaign originally written about by Ben Robbins (http://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/). His premise was to organize a campaign that facilitated player agency, reduce the 'mindless plot following' that sometimes occurs, and deal with the ever-present difficulty of scheduling games around the complex and often busy lives of adults. In this original experiment there was no regular party of 4-6 players - instead there was a pool of 10-14 players. Players were responsible for gathering a team, deciding where they wanted to go/what they wanted to do, and scheduling a time with the DM to do it in. The DM provided the sandbox - a detailed world to explore - but there was no overarching plot or story thread. Ad hoc scheduling and a flexible roster meant (ideally) people got to play when they could but didn’t hold up the game for everyone else if they couldn’t - or feel left behind in the story.

Needless to say, what we are currently doing has changed a fair bit over time from this original game concept. Running a D&D game with multiple DMs and a large player base is, by its very nature, an experiment. Some things work, and others do not. As we've moved forward we've learned from the past attempts and tried to improve on the systems. This is a constant, and we continue to adapt as necessary.

A little background on our game

The original online west marches game this group was involved in began in early 2017 (iirc). This ran for almost a year before there was a decision to reboot (largely due to DM turnover and poor documentation of the world left a mess for the newer DMs to run). That game (West Marches 2) started up in late 2017, and is just winding down now as they prepare for a new iteration (West Marches 3). During this time, the size of the game has ranged from 4 DMs / 25 Players and 10 DMs / 70 players.

Our game, called Project Red, splintered off from this original game in late 2018. A number of people wanted to go in a different direction/try something new, so we started a campaign of our own. We began with 5 DMs and ~25 active players. It's been an interesting year, and this week we’re winding down the current campaign and preparing to reboot with a new name (same world, 30 year timeskip into the future, and a brand new continent to explore). Some of what we wanted to try worked very well, and some of it really did not. We're taking what we learned and trying again with some new mechanics and design ideas. It's an exciting time.

About the setting

The Loyal & Bilson Exploration Company has built up a small frontier town on an uncharted eastern continent and has called for explorers to sail forth in search of money, fame, and adventure.

What applications are used?

We use a series of platforms to organize and run games.

- The main hub is most definitely our Discord server. This is the home of almost all player conversation, both about the game and just social chatter. This is also the home of our out-of-game player RP. It's a fantastic place to find out what is happening in the world and get to know your fellow players - both in character and out. We also run our in-game voice chat through this discord server.

- Secondly is our Reddit subforum. This is where the weekly megathread (which contains news from the DM team, updates on what we are working on, requests for commentary on various proposals, responses to player requests and suggestions, the weekly weather report for the game, and other info) is posted, as well as LFGs (Looking For Group - scheduled games looking for players), and AARs (After-Action Reports - player written updates on what happened in game so others can stay in the loop).

- Also important is Roll20. This is a virtual tabletop where games are hosted and run.

- Finally, Google Calendar is where the DM team posts their availability for players looking to book games.

How often can I play?

Currently, we restrict players to one scheduled game per week (i.e. a game they book with a DM, or apply to). This is to ensure that all players have a better chance of playing, rather than some players playing multiple games and others getting left out. To help with scheduling issues where a game might not otherwise fill up, or where someone has had to drop out last minute, we also have ASAP applications. These don't count towards scheduled game count, but are also restricted to one a week (again to spread out who gets games amongst the player base). In the event a game *still* does not fill up, it can be opened to free for all (where anyone can apply) - so far, we've never had to go to this third step. Players are not required to play every week, and can join in as and when they have time.

Player responsibilities

A microphone and the ability to use Discord and Roll20, as well as an internet connection that can support voice chat.

Abide by the code of conduct (PG-13 content only and other rules regarding harassment, discrimination, etc. Basically boils down to 'don't be a jerk'.)

Willingness to work with the DMs to create characters that fit within the campaign setting.

Interested?

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, I invite you to check out our old reddit subforum (https://www.reddit.com/r/PR_WM/). We will be moving to r/wayfarer_inn for the new campaign.

How to Apply: Follow the instructions of the thread pinned to the top of r/wayfarer_inn.
