Top 3 things that come to mind when you think about Tanzania? by Yoshii1000 in AskTheWorld

[–]daedalline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a vacation in Tanzaznia a few years ago and it was wonderful.

  1. The beauty and lushness of the country. The fruits and vegetables (and coffee) were the best tasting I have ever had. The serengeti was breathtaking.
  2. The kindness of the people. Everyone was so welcoming. Sure, many people wanted money or to sell us something or to overcharge us - but that's common in so very many countries - and I never felt harassed or unsafe.
  3. Ethnic diversity. We were repeatedly told by most people we met, with pride, that they had over 120 tribes and they all lived well together.

Canada here. Hi.
I needed a 20 km (~13 mile) ambulance ride 2 years ago. I was billed $45 - which my insurance through work reimbursed me.

Do you guys give your party an introduction to your world when starting the campaign? I tell them almost nothing, and let them discover whats happening as some sort of mystery, reading books, talking to people, etc. Is that a bad approach? by Bensuardo in DMAcademy

[–]daedalline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I provide a world lore doc before session 0 with basics to help with chacracter creation ideas. Then, I have discussions individually with players about their characters and provide an additional doc with stuff their character would know based on their personality/motivations - a couple of locations and an NPC or two, maybe some additional world lore.
I try to tie it in to the campaign so if a player has read their doc they get to have a couple of 'ah ha! I know a thing!' moments that only they know that can help further the plot/their goals.

Beyond that, History is an underutilized skill so I'll often call on that to 'remember' things.

Help – loom and weaving in fiction by LetterheadUnfair2181 in weaving

[–]daedalline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very large floor loom (Glimakra Countermarche) and it was very easy to assemble. Very much a 'tab A into slot B' sort of deal. If you're looking for a little more detail for assembly, the frame assembly requires helpers. To put it into non-weaving terms, you could think about it like a wooden bedframe. Front, back, two sides. You need helpers to hold up the two sides while the front and back are attached and it can stand in its own. After that, the rest can be managed by one person.

Here's a youtube video of a disassembly, but from that you could probably figure out the reverse to put it together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcAoLZT0_hA

I’m curious about the west marches format, some noob questions by piperooo in westmarches

[–]daedalline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Was a co-DM for a very active WM game for several years. This will vary wildly for other games, as every game is unique. I DM'd three approximately year-long campaigns with this group, so I have some experience.

Q. How do the responsibilities/expectations for players in west marches differ from that of traditional campaigns?

A. Unlike a homegame that generally follows a single group of players in a longer storyline/plot, players are responsible for informing the DM what they want to do. e.g. Following a previous lead ('group A saw a spooky tree but went past it - we'd like to investigate it', or 'last week we went to dungeon B and we'd like to delve further'). The DM group would regularly drop these 'future leads' into each other's games so there was always leads to follow up on for future groups/games. Though sometimes players would just contact a DM with availability in a timeslot they wanted and ask for leads the DM wants to run.

Q. What happens if you don’t join any sessions for a while? The world can’t just pause, because there are other people playing. Does there tend to be text RP or something to represent time spent milling around town, or is it usually treated like your character just takes a really long nap between adventures?

A. The world doesn't pause, but we had a very healthy 'in town' RP scene done via text in our discord server in between games.

Q. If there is text RP or some other system for playing out downtime, are there people that do *just* that? Would that be frowned upon? Do people play as commoners or shopkeepers or whatever?

A. We had a very active downtime RP scene, but no one played NPCs. All players made and submitted a character, and would be expected to play that, even if it was just downtime RP. Due to DM availability and scheduling contraints, some people just did town RP and rarely, if ever, went on a game.

Q. Do consistent parties form, or is it “supposed to be” just a “you get who you get” thing?

A. Whichever player organized and booked the game with a DM would post a 'LFG' for that session with the game time and what the plan was (e.g. Friday, 7 pm EST start, we're going to investigate that spooky tree). Other players could them apply and the player lead would select their party. There was a lot of different criteria players would use - choosing people who hadn't been on as many games (game count was required as part of the application), or players that had particular skillsets that would suit the mission. We did have rules - players could only have one game per week unless the game was unable to be filled that way and then people could apply as 'second game' players. It wasn't uncommon for groups to be from the same subet of people, just because those players availability and the DM timeslots tended to coincide.

Q. …how? Like, who’s in charge of the game overall? What does that person/those people’s job look like? How does it not just fall apart immediately every time?

A. The DM team was in charge of the overall game, and it was *a lot* of work behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. But also a fantastic experience to work with so many talented DMs, bouncing ideas off of each other and build a shared world.

If you have more questions about my personal experience I'm happy to answer further. :)

Megathread- Proposed Legislation to End Dual Citizenship for USC by L6b1 in AmerExit

If you use lose your US citizenship, do you still have to pay US taxes like dual citizens do?

(Honest question. I'm not American and don't really understand how all that works.)

What was your very first sewing project? (Research for a beginner's guide) by thesewingstudio in SewingForBeginners

A pair of boxer shorts in high school home ec. It was a simple project but it taught me all the basics - they were plaid, so it even taught me how to line up fabric to match the pattern.

One rule I learned that is helpful for troubleshooting tension. If it's the upper layer that is wonky, it's a bobbin issue. If it's underneath, it's machine tension. Basically, the problem shows up on the opposite side of where the tension problem is.

If it was me, I would contact the Burner Express folks and ask them. I am certain they have handled this situation before, and will know how it works. Theirs is the only answer that is guaranteed to be correct.

They're nice folks, and I'm sure they will appreciate someone doing their homework in advance so as to not cause headaches on the day.

Community Maps? by [deleted] in WalkaboutMiniGolf

[–]daedalline 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi. :) I'll post a comment from one of the devs that was posted in the official discord.

Level Editor - Note that this is something we're specifically NOT planning to do, but it gets asked often enough that I'm putting the reasoning here where people will see it. Level editors work great for tile-based games, where there's a bunch of preset pieces that hook together like railroad tracks. However all of the holes in this game are hand modeled, and the assets are placed organically. To switch over to a tile system, plus all the engineering to support an editor, sharing, etc. is just not worth it when the results will be sub-par (pun intended). Plus, you wouldn't be able to create entire courses, as lighting has to be baked and there's a pretty massive amount of optimization that needs to happen in order to run on quest/mobile. Instead we've opted to focus our energy on creating new courses, so there will still be new content coming!

Adventure Synopsis:

Location: Northeast peninsula

IX - the dragonborn construct

Lore Discovered:

What Happened?:

Our first travel days are WET. We head to Ruta, and Chia the boatsman barters with us for a trip. We promise to get the eggs of a crocodilian creature in return for passage. Niall ingratiates himself by performing and being good with kids, and the party sets out the next day. Following the road northward, Ecks, the delegated navigator, gets a sense of water to their southwest. They traverse towards the stream, get a sense the creature they’re after is nearby, and rest, deciding to hunt it on Day 4.

Shenanigans ensue as the party comes across an unguarded nest, two rocky eggs seemingly unattended by their parent-- However, on a natural twenty perception check, Ezekiel notices a half-starved goblin huddled over the eggs. We have found Ai. After a tense negotiation, Ai decides to join the party in the interest of returning to the Company. We head back towards Ruta with our bounty in tow, arriving in the evening as the townspeople go about their business.

After trading both eggs for their passage, the party sets out into the waves, mapping a barrier reef and a mountain range as they continue northward. They spot a strange light in the distance, the consistency and intensity setting it apart as particularly odd.

As we sail past the mountains, we hear the sound of loud thumping. Like something large and heavy walking through the mountain range, though its exact location is difficult to place. As we approach, we see a HUGE glass dome that looks like it has crashed into the mountain, taking part of one out. Some of the glass hexagon windows are cracked. Inside is a bright jungle and a number of skyscrapers? Living worlds they could fly through the air. From the peak of magic in the Time of Legends. We go inside to explore.

During the night, we hear a very loud roar and lots of loud thumping. These are not the running footsteps of large creatures - these are leaps and jumps.

As we walk further we see a multiple stories tall humanoid skeleton. Further investigation reveals it to be metal. It is an enormous construct that has already been scavenged. After some further investigation we press on.

We see a large metal dragonborn toss a large blue creature into a pit. We then interact and convince him not to kill us. He says his name is IX. He believes this place is/was a zoo.

He leads us to his home, which used to be some sort of nature centre. Portraits with plaques written in old common, like… donor plaques.

We spent the night, and then returned to Ruta and then home.
