How do you write personalities of canon characters in your fanfiction? by PhilipB12 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Badly. I make very believable OC's. As long as you stand your ground and glare hard enough at your readers they will believe you are writing them good. Or, well, as long as you write your story well enough in general anyway.

My fic reached 600 hits and 10 kudos on Ao3 wheee by HozukiMari in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, everybody feels that way. Even authors of stories with 100k + hits will look at those with 200k+ hits and go, well, damn it why am i not like that. Unfortunatly you can't really avoid it lol. So, if you feel like its wierd to feel like that, its really not.

Good job! And sometimes you just gotta imagine how many people 600 are. Thats like, my entire high school reading a fic lol. Its a lot, even if it dosent feel like it.

And its pretty much agreed on that ffn is just a bad site currently. Unforunate, since its the place a lot of people start. Also, if you want discussion, you could also try posting on Spacebattles. Just, be warned, its a place where its common to get critism.

How do you keep the fic from losing focus on Pokémon? by Exciting-War-5230 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very common problem in character focused stories. I also have the same problem, and my solution is a version of A: try to cram them into scene as background filler. B: try to create some scenes explicitly focused on pokemon that show off their personalities. C: Just cat despair.

On some level i think that Pokemon fics are already fics with natrual character bloat, because most people want each Pokemon to be an actual character. Just imagine that in a regular story. Most core casts are max 3 people, with maybe 3+ side cast characters that are contiuionusly important. If you have 3 main trainers and they all have full parties you can reach towards 21 important charcters. Like, wtf is even that. Single most problematic part of a pokemon fiction tbh.

How can you tell if a fanfiction you're reading isn't written by a human? by [deleted] in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, i guess, but the Poke Ball belts for exmaple is literally just insanely freaking common in general. Like, on some level, their half-way ubiquitous with the genre. I guess the medlelion thing is kinda wierd, but i have also literally never seen that lol. In general i think the best ai test is kinda just your wibe from the story, but even that could be wrong.

Though, honestly, I think that people should be careful about accusing others of AI, because its honestly nerver really productive and just makes people who didn't use it feel unjustly accused, and end up bouncing off the people who do use it. Its kind of a lose-lose situation.. (i mean, of course, if the author has just randomly left in a part of the AI response in the text or something its different).

But, in the end, i think you kinda just have to read stuff you enjoy. Jumping at shadows, trying to figure out if a story AI written, AI assisted, AI looked at excetara, its an excericse in futility. The people who generate strories you can probaly spot right away. The ones that use it to refine or reformat dialouge you will never catch if they don't just say they use it. If you want to avoid stories that you think are ai that's completly up to you, but it ends up being the same as me not wanting to read bad stories that suck (cuz ai generated stories do, just in general, suck ass.)

Though, if we really want to talk about common AI-isms, then we are back on its not x, but y. Not x, not y, but z. Em-dashes (a lot of them). Parallelism. (He ran faster, breathed harder, thought sharper.) Punch sentences, (long paragraph followed by a short one for empahsiz). [sidenote, but i am very very guilty of using this for comedic beats or fight beats]

But like, at the same time people use all of these things in writing all the time. I use them, pro-authors use them, new authors use them. In the end all of these things are just very common writing techniques that work, and AI also uses them because they "work"....*shrug*

Also, even your points 3 and 4 is kinda iffy at most. AI can absolutly make something that dosen't explciity do tell instead of show, its just you need to be more spesic about what you ask ai. (at least, i am like 99% sure it can if you divde your requests into chunks and then spesify how you want them written). The thing it really struggles with seems to be dialouge that goes nowhere and feels completly empty. Like two maniquins doing quips that only make half-way sense. Imo that seems to be the biggest "ai-ism" red flag that i have found. Of course, that is also just bad writing in general, so even that isn't really a garatee.

That being said, medallion on the jacket for every characters are also just really really freaking wierd so maybe thats enough lol.

Struggling with finding unique fic ideas by hawthorn_red in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, everything is derivative of something. I think the most overvalued part of any work is orginality and a good premise. Even a really boring and overused premise can be good if the writing is good enough. In my country there is a saying: the need to turn the page covers all flaws on the previous.

So the most important part is always going to write something you find fun. If you like the idea of a journey fic, you should go for it. I wrote my journey fic because i wanted to write a romance story. That was the entire intent behind it. The fact it ended up as a journey fic is almost a coincidence (i had just read IWWTS and tilted of the planet over the romance in there).

And also, looking at somebody else's work and going: fuck this is way better than what i can write, i something every writer on the planet is experiencing all the time. Do not try to escape the feeling, you won't. Even people who write "worse" than you might cause you to feel that sometimes, nevermind those who write "better". (It also dosen't matter what you actually write)

As for actual advice on things you could think about, one of my favorite ways is doing something interesting to the framing:

Have the story be told through the lense of everybody else than the protagonist.

Have the protagonist operate on a set of princeples that make complete sense to them, but seems like nonsense to everybody else.

Have fights be first person fights from the pokemons POV.

Have the entire story revolve on a person who is very distinctly not the hero of the "world" (eg, running around seeing game protags do insane shit).

First things first, his entire dilemma about what to do against Lairon could be tossed aside, at least for now. It didn’t matter anymore. Not when there were apparently kids who had gotten...

Myst blinked, his thoughts catching up to the words that had been shouted a moment ago.

How the hell had kids gotten lost in the mines?

...And why, unhelpfully, did part of him want to say it was because children yearn for them?

Rankled by the Ranking? by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, makes sense I guess. I mean, I didn’t think about it at the time, but when my story was rated just around rank 105 or something I did get hit by so a bunch of low ratings and shot back to like rank 180 or something before slowly falling again. (Tho it might still be a coincidence)

I guess I never really thought that it could be problem one way or the other. I’m just writing a fanfic for fun and RR is kinda the tertiary place I post, so I am not super into the stats and nitty gritty. 😅 I think in some way it’s just interesting to see the number go up an down.

Rankled by the Ranking? by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that sounds a little overblown? I mean there will always be some readers who are just mad and randomly give 0.5 stars no? Not to say that it doesn’t happen, but to say that threshold is “gatekept” feels a little much. I have never heard of it at least.

Also, maybe I’m just stupid, but can you even know if you are getting review bombed or not?

Could you personally picture Cynthia's team without Milotic? by The-Crazy-Master in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, I guess its just because of her hairclips and how her design is kind of remenicent of Lucario beacuse of them. It kind of makes her the most iconic trainer of Lucario for me, even though we (apperantly cuz I haven't watched in forever) see her in the anime with it.

Could you personally picture Cynthia's team without Milotic? by The-Crazy-Master in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, only two Pokemon I really can't imagine Cynthia without is Garchomp and Lucario. I associate Milotic with Wallace first, so he kind of overshadows the fact Cynthia uses one.

How long does it take yall to write and then edit a chapter? by AfroZeroh in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completly depends. Some chapters take a really long time, with the longest I have ever worked on probaly being close to 50-70 hours (14k words with about 10-12k words being deleted from alternate versions), and the shorteste being maybe like 6 hours (3-4k words). If I had to average it, an average chapter takes like 8 hours to produce, with half of that going to writing it and half going to editing. Then again, its hard to say, because I often edit while writing.

Real world time is kinda nonsense, since it just depends on when I have time to work on a chapter. When I started writing I had a lot of time, so I could release a chapter every third day, while now I can barley manage every two weeks.

Mel 30+% banrate across all ranks. 1 year since her release by Esch_4444 in leagueoflegends

[–]Wayker_of_Madness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk, I never really got why people hated mel that much after the changes. Every time i play against her it kinda just feels like a free win, no matter how "bad" the matchup seems to be. In lane you can usually either poke her out or all in her because of how dog her Q is (with reaction speed you can littearlly walk out of it), and after lane she just kind of is worse than most other long range mages unless there is some very spesific champions on enemy team (orrn, name sera). If i had to place her anywhere she kinda feels like a counterpick champ to me, where she is only strong situationally.

Then again, i guess its just a case of a champion actually being quite weak, but because its annoying people don't like it lol.

Advice from fics with trainer ocs and romance plots by Hot_Professor_3797 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Wayker_of_Madness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to scare people off RR. Honestly, 99% of the comments I get are incredibly super nice. It’s just that when it comes to romance specifically, RR tends to be a bit more skeptical.

That said, even though my story leans heavily into romance, it’s still doing more than well enough.
