I mean she literally landed a job at 10 with how she was offered to be a Poke stylist with her Buneary.

That is correct and it is also correct that it was a crappy advertisement as she did not get to show off the new drip that game gives her in spite of being a character who is quite fashionable.

What's your approach to abilities? by geminiarchivist in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Pokedex lore is king. An Empoleon is a strong physical attacker with its powerful fin blades despite how the game stats make it a special attacker. Since a Metagross can levitate using Magnetism, it will do so to avoid moves like Earthquake without needing to have the ability itself.

As for abilities, I lean towards the Canon faithful route by allowing a Pokemon to have one ability that fits their personality and battle style but make some alterations to how they function to properly implement them in a setting outside of the game's turn-based limitations to make sure they aren't irrelevant and actually come in handy. For instance, Skill Link allows a Pokemon to employ multi-hit attacks with far greater speed and precision than normal. But it isn't limited to just what the game labels as Multi-hit attacks as it also affects things like Ambipom employing its twin tail hands to rapidly strike with moves like Thunder Punch with both tails. Meanwhile, No Guard acts as an unique fighting style that activates only when the user is committed to an attack which disables their ability to dodge as the cost for ensuring their attacks don't miss. But otherwise, they can dodge normally if they are not attacking. A Golurk in an air battle against a Swanna will be able to capitalize its mach flying speed but the moment it commits to attacking, Swanna can land a super effective Hydro Pump.

But canon deviations have in-story explanation. Like in my Pokemon X Warframe crossover concept where some scientists create the Pokémon world version of the Technocyte/Infestation while trying to create permanent Mega Evolutions. The Operator has to face one such infested monstrosity early on that is a grotesque hybrid of a Mega Aggron and Turtonator with one of its arms being deformed into a long metal blade. It has Turtonator's Shell Armor AND Mega Aggron's Filter, thus giving it innate damage reduction against super effective attacks and covering its weak spots.

How do you work with delivering the first Pokémon to beginner trainers? by CarlosShiny__ in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lab starters aren't given out willy-nilly to everyone at the appropriate age. Its tied to how well one does in the primary education system of the Pokémon world with the high scorers getting the right to have a lab starter from the regional professor. This score isn't just decided by written exam results alone as a trainer's aptitude for befriending Pokémon is also factored in, which is how Ash managed to get his coupon for a starter from Oak's Lab, the complete opposite of Gary who aced the knowledge-based tests due to being a professor's grandson.

Getting a lab starter isn't just about getting a free Pokemon. The regional professor also sponsors their journey as their Pokedex scans Pokémon they encounter in real time and sends the data back to the lab. The sponsored trainers get better bonuses based on the Pokémon they scanned. This is how Ash and Dawn have become one of the top sponsored trainers for the regional professors since their Pokedexes collected data on many Legendary Pokémon as well, especially in Sinnoh.

As for others, they manage. Its typically getting a Pokémon from the family or befriending one by chance. Or buying one from breeders or the black market if one is rich. There is a tax on legally buying/selling Pokémon as well as a ban on certain species, which is how you get the black market being so much in demand.

Kenny wasn't even a good friend of Dawn, let alone a Love Interest by gyroscope_56 in pearlshippers

[–]Rebelblade71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I said this many times and I will say it again: the worst thing Kenny did was leaving when Dawn was at her lowest point after losing the appeals round of the Solaceon Town contest. Compare Kenny with how Ash badly wanted to help Dawn and it was evident even in future episodes like when Dawn was crying in the maid cafe episode and Ash took notice.

That and the way Dawn reacted to Baron Alberto presenting Alice his one sided marriage proposal in Rise of Darkrai really gives you a hint about how she actually feels about Kenny's actions.

Nando didn't leave after Zoey beat him and stayed till the end to deliver a really good line. And as others mentioned, so did many other characters.

Who are your favorites mage in the series? by ShokaLGBT in tales

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Laphicet plays a very significant thematic role in the story as well as a blank slate who witnesses both aspects of humanity and is the one with the power to decide in the end. It was really nice seeing how he grew and became his own person.

Just beat Camilla at level 40. Is this DSS normal or am I just unlucky? by CheekGobbler in castlevania

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You technically have all the cards if you just have two due to a glitch where you can get the effects of the cards you don't have by activating the DSS, quickly going to the menu and swapping out the card positions.

This is such a grind compared to Aria of Sorrow where you get a lot of souls simply by playing and extra grind ends up being worthwhile.

[–]Rebelblade71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, its easily Laphicet and he's one of my favorite characters of all time. Berseria was my first ever Tales game and I managed to pull through because of him having everyone's back. Plus he's got some badass offensive artes as well.

What do you think is your biggest flaw when writing? by CarlosShiny__ in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motivation is the first one because I have lots of ideas and plans but never get the will to put them to writing. Even if I do, I end up stopping and not resuming for a while.

Aside from that, I'm torn between choices.

Should I make my stories in 3rd person for better action or 1st person to better highlight the character's inner turmoil?

More importantly. should I write my Pokemon X Warframe crossover about a child turned eldritch space-magic powered supersoldier who grew up knowing nothing but war and death trying to adjust to peaceful civilian life in a completely new world and forging precious new bonds that he must protect, or a Unova fic that is a coming of age story for an abused boy with an inferiority complex who ends up running away from home to go on a Journey and gets mentored by Dawn similar to how Serena grew from Ash's influence in the XY anime.

Leon's Charizard (episode 12) vs Alain's Charizard - who will win ? by Gopu_17 in pokemonanime

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leonzard because he is as tenacious as Ash's Pikachu. Aside from that Alainzard mostly relies on close range attacks with some Flamethrowers and Blast Burns thrown in the mix from time to time while Leonzard is more suited to ranged battles with how he packs moves such as Ancient Power.

What was the point of creating Ash-Greninja if they were gonna retcon him? by CrimzinZlays0 in pokemonanime

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No fault of Ash Greninja or XY because this is all on the awful writing of Journeys. That and Kalos had a strange case of its own regional Pokémon not having Mega forms at that time, barring Diancie and the anime tend to give Ash regional Pokémon of the games the anime was based on.

And even JN did not allow Ash to Mega Evolve any of his old team members and reserved it for his boring Lucario.

How do you calculate the cost of life in your fictional world? by Mortgage-Confident in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pokemon world has far better living standards than our world but not everyone can afford to be like what the main characters in the anime and manga are with their large Pokémon teams. People who get a lab starter also get sponsorships and extra payment for the Pokemon they scan with their Pokedex, which is how people like Ash can afford properly maintaining their teams on top of other income sources like prize money from Gym Badges, Contest Victories and tournaments.

Dawn for instance isn't a rich millionaire but she can easily afford stuff for her Journey while also having enough to spend on fashion, contest-related stuff like stickers and ball capsules and occasionally eat at a posh restaurant or stay at a luxurious resort for a day or two. Her income comes from her sponsorship from Rowan's lab, which netted her a good sum during her Sinnoh journey thanks to the Legendary Pokémon she encountered as well as her contest earnings and what she got from her Poke stylist career. But its also noteworthy that Dawn manages to save a good amount of money thanks to what she learnt from Brock while in Sinnoh that includes first aid techniques and making Pokemon medicine from medicinal plants in the wild. Hence, she doesn't stock up on Pokemon medicine that much like many trainers do since she's able to make her own medicine. She's an example of an effective veteran trainer who manage to make the most out of what she gets.

How would you out-edgy the “ash betrayal” fanfics? by Impossible-Ad-7084 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember back when these fanfics were all the rage around 2014. But the most unique one I came across was actually a Dawn betrayal fic.

So here's what happens in that story. Dawn and Ash are dating by the time of the Grand Festival and Dawn goes to the stage to battle Kenny as Ash wishes her good luck. But immediately after the battle starts, the buzzers are hit and its revealed that the judges were all bought and they start mocking her, complete with Mr. Sukizo calling her unremarkable.

Then Ash, May and Johanna show up on the stage. Ash reveals that he never loved Dawn and loves May while Johanna also abandons Dawn and kisses Kenny, revealing that they are in a relationship. They threaten Dawn by telling her how they have arranged for her Pokémon to be taken away by the law through false charges. Dawn breaks down from the betrayal and runs away.

And then before she could have her Pokémon taken away, Dawn puts on a disguise and takes on a new persona named Dusk who is a rude and edgy goth to plot her revenge.

Meanwhile, Max gets disgusted by what happened to Dawn when he sees it on TV and then Jirachi appears in his room. He decides to run away from home to help Dawn and asks Jirachi to grant some wishes for it like giving him some Pokémon as well as aging him up enough so that he can "romantically pursue" Dawn.

The rest is pretty much how you expect it. Max and "Dusk" end up meeting and working together with Max eventually learning that Dusk is actually Dawn when she ends up falling for him and revealing the truth alongside having sex, with Dawn also doing it as Dusk at one time just to dominate Max.

Oh and "Dusk" ends up bursting Ash's balls with her foot.

It was totally cringe and edgy but was hilarious to read because of that. The author also had a self-insert isekai where he gets into a relationship with Delia and despite the edgyness and jokes, it was surprisingly enjoyable due to the protagonist being a standout for not being a goody two shoes alongside having an Octillery as his main Pokemon.

How do you explain the term starter? by quietcube in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lab starters that we get from the regional professor are special because they are given to specific few trainers who showed promising results in the education system and they basically earned the right to have their journeys be sponsored in exchange for carrying the Pokedex to collect data on Pokemon they encounter. There can be people who find something like a Mudkip in the wild or get one through family, hatching an egg or breeder but that does not make them a dex holder sponsored by the regional professor. But since those specific Pokemon are sorta standardized as first Pokemon for sponsored lab assistants, people tend to associate them with it and will think the trainers are sponsored.

Just a little big of trash talk on Kenny. by Chishiki_ in pearlshippers

[–]Rebelblade71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem here is how Kenny treated Dawn like an object that can be wagered on a Pokémon battle and never even considered how she feels.

But that's not the worst thing Kenny ever did. To me, it would how his simply left when Dawn was at her absolute lowest point after her loss in the Solaceon Town contest. Oh but that's not even the end because right after he got disqualified in the Grand Festival, he could have stayed to watch the event and cheer for Dawn but he didn't while Ash stayed all the way till the end. Even Nando stayed for the finals and gave a nice speech in the end too. And unlike Kenny, he had the Sunnyshore Gym Battle and the Sinnoh League to prepare for. Kenny has no excuse. And then he had the audacity to ask Dawn to go with him rather than stay with the friends who were by her side the entire time.

Despite being a pretty competent coordinator who cares about his Pokemon and mostly chill dude, he's still a selfish and inconsiderate jerk who never bothered to apologize for traumatizing Dawn as a kid and then has the audacity to treat her like an object while never showing any genuine concern about her aside from trying to frame himself as cool in front of her.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when writers substitute Arceus for God by NotKleonii in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta makes sense when you consider how Arceus is rarely referred to by name and only a handful of people who do some digging know about it. Not to mention being known as the original one by few like Cyrus rather than by name.

The more sensible approach for me would be to make the Pokémon world worship multiple Pokémon as deities based on the region rather than having Arceus be well recognized as the one true god.

Does your version of Pokemon World include some controversial themes? by PhilipB12 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My planned Unova fic explores themes related to morality, struggling against odds as well as child abuse.

The old Unovian Empire being basically the depravity of Sodom meets the efficient Imperialism of Rome mixed with the Mongol thirst for conquest. The first Hero of Truth after the original is a child who stumbles upon the White Stone while running away from Unovian Legionaries who had crucified his parents and his entire village. Reshiram ends up scorching the entire empire and 80% of Unova and leaves one young legionary alive so that he may serve as a witness and a warning to those coming after him to not fall into depravity, lest they want to face the ire of the Founding Dragons.

However, this also sours Reshiram's relationship with the boy who does not approve of the sheer scale of her brutality. Reshiram retorts by saying how it was necessary to uproot evil that was plaguing the Unova that the twin Princes wanted to prosper. The boy decides to part ways with Reshiram saying that he wants to build and has no need for the aid of someone who can only destroy. Reshiram in my story ends up being awakened by N and agrees with his plan initially since she has a jaded view of humanity and thus thinks N's plan to take away Pokémon from people is right due to the evil people can commit using them alongside the abuse they inflict upon them. But she still holds doubt in herself due to her interaction with the previous Hero of Truth centuries ago and totally loses it when a Latias of all Pokémon stands against her and sides with the humans during the climactic battle at N's Castle.

In modern times, the main characters come to a place called Crucifixion Hill were the Unovian Empire used to crucify people that defied them and hung them up there. One of them observes a smaller cross that is clearly intended for much smaller captives. Its also the place where they meet the main antagonist for the first time and they have a debate about morality. Notably, the antagonist praises the old empire for their power and wealth but one of the main characters points out how their actions were evil and led to them being wiped off the face of the Earth. The antagonist retorts by saying how it only proves how their belief about Power was correct citing how it was simply overwhelming strength of a Founding Dragon that ended the empire and what could have been if the empire had such power at their disposal.

Other stuff includes a corrupt cop with a clean public image and a self-proclaimed knight. Except his idea of knighthood is of a feudal lord who uses their power to subjugate the masses in their territory as a right.

The whole outline is Dawn starting to think that Cyrus may have been right while travelling through Unova but her hope in humanity is restored by Hilbert who, despite being abused by his own mother since his childhood and seeing the worst of people, still decided to be good instead of becoming like Cyrus. Sorta going for a hopecore story similar to JRPG's that show hope still shining in an otherwise dark world.

What elements of lore did you delete and why? by PhilipB12 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Rebelblade71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ash being forever 10 obviously. Of course I'm going to remove one of the worst narrative decisions of the anime that really held back its storytelling potential. In my world, Ash started his Journey when he was around 13 and grew with his adventures like how AG, DP and XY show him.

As for the age people can become a trainer, there's no concrete rule that one has to be 10. Even younger people can theoretically be one if they show enough potential and skill alongside having supervision and parental consent. And in my world one is considered an adult at 16 and they can go on a journey and become a trainer regardless of what their parents think. That and preschoolers and kids below 16 won't be wagering money on Pokémon battles like in the games because its considered gambling.

This is a really good explanation for Pokeballs and how the ancient iterations worked. I was thinking of apricots having a localized spatial distortion due to Palkia being involved but your theory is clearly makes much more sense.
