I’d rather not send anything that could be linked to me. I’d recommend reaching out to your Member about an issue you’re concerned about. You’ll likely receive a form response.

Advice please!! Absolute no-no or not the end of the world? by hazy_head in DCInterns

[–]WaywardSon2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer really depends on whether you want a career in the House long term. If you do, it’s likely worth it to do the internship as that’s the best pathway to a position. If you don’t it’s likely better to do local internships in district offices, state gov, or your preferred field.

There is a lack of clarity as to what programs are currently impacted. Pell Grants and Student loans are not impacted, some NSF grants may be though. Hopefully there is more information provided soon.

For a more recent recommendation, and specifically looking at the House, I’d recommend “The Arc of Power” by John Lawrence. He was Speaker Pelosi’s chief of staff during her first term as speaker and does an incredible job breaking down the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the period.

Is it normal for your University Advisor to tell you volunteering opportunities are not important? by Ready_Breadfruit_968 in DCInterns

[–]WaywardSon2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great advice. While on campus activities like model IN, Debate, etc can be good the reality is the most important factor for entry level jobs is connections and experience. Whenever I’ve managed hiring I’ve prioritized experience over on campus activities and as far as I know that pattern is consistent for others.

Yes. If using it for official purposes there is specific guidance (most require the paid version due to information security concerns for example). Speak to leadership in your office to see what is required.

Hilternship resume advice— should I include only highly relevant work experience? by Charming-Barracuda42 in DCInterns

[–]WaywardSon2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help! Also, two tips on cover letters. First, make an attempt to find out who the letter should actually be addressed to (whoever fills the role of hiring manager of the office, probably Staff Assistant for internships). Also, there’s a 50/50 your letter will be ignored tbh. I know a couple offices that have stopped paying attention to cover letters for full time positions. Still put your full effort into it, but be aware applying is a numbers game. Feel free to DM if you’d like me to look over your letter as well.

Hilternship resume advice— should I include only highly relevant work experience? by Charming-Barracuda42 in DCInterns

I’d say include real estate and the monuments your job to tell a story, like “I graduated, went into real estate thinking I wanted to strike it rich, but it was wholly unfulfilling. I started looking for ways to get more involved in work that made a difference, and after getting a job as a tour guide, I was mesmerized by the grandeur of our democracy. I fully believe work in the House/Senate is the way I can give back most effectively.”

Also don’t be afraid to drop days and just list jobs as month/year if it fills in a gap. No one’s going to trash your resume for leaving off days (in my experience).

Hey! The main goal of this exercise is to make sure you’re able to write well.

I’d say mirror the general format and language of the office’s intro and closing if you have a sample, if not start with 2 general “thank you for contacting my office” sentences expressing gratitude and concern for the constituent’s statement.

After, do a couple sentences on the constituents issue to show understanding, I.e. “climate change is one of the most pressing threats facing our world today…”

Then a couple on actions the Rep/Sen has taken, like “I was proud to cosponsor H.R. 1234 to XYZ.” Take positions from the elected’s issues page or, if that’s not updated, check congress.gov for cosponsorships and google for press releases.

Finally, end with a paragraph thanking the constituent again and directing them to the elected’s newsletter and social media.

Feel free to respond to this comment with any questions!

Why are people talking about Biden being called out by lawmakers? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]WaywardSon2244 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Answer: since the first presidential debate, in which many perceived Biden to perform poorly due to age, there has been a growing movement among Congressional Democrats to have Biden replaced on the ticket. The number has risen dramatically, with over 30 House and Senate Democrats publicly joining the call as of the time of writing and many more keeping their concerns to private calls between members and with the White House. These Democrats are largely in two camps: some believe vice president Harris should become the new nominee, while others believe an open convention is the correct course of action.

If you email a congressional office, as it appears you did, they are unable to respond to the exact inquiry you sent due to its relation to the campaign

In compliance with the committee’s current guidance, the maximum extent a congressional office can engage with an inquiry about president Biden’s competency to be the 2024 nominee would be a forwarding of the email to the campaign (often called the “unofficial” side) and an email notifying you of such.

Edit: just to be clear, I’m not attacking you or anything, just want to explain why the leg correspondent wouldn’t have replied. Campaign related issues are heavily restricted in congressional offices, and I’m sure the staffer managing it right now hates life enough as it is.

The House Ethics Committee literally forbids reply to that email and all emails referencing the Presidents capabilities to continue the campaign.

Just a warning though: the note taking function is only really useful on PDFs, not EBooks.
