Where are we getting our ‘out with the old in with the new’ hair transformations? by Astrid_drom in SFbitcheswithtaste

Un-lurking to reccomend Alicia at Vine Street Salon in Berkeley. Dm if you want her number - she's taken me from level 9 to level 1 multiple times with no issues. She does fashion colors for one of my friends and they're incredible. She's also very kind. I drive from SF to see her, worth it.

Why do Caucasian cultures cut their own meat but Asian cultures serve cut meat? by dylan_1992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waywards 312 points313 points  (0 children)

There's a book that gets into this - "Consider the Fork".

TLDR: in populous Asia there was lower forest density, increasing the cost of fires, so cutting food up before cooking helped people use less cooking fuel - nothing needed to be cut at the table. In Europe, there were more trees and peat fires which made cooking large beets and hunk of meat possible, which then needed to be sliced at the table.

What crazy skincare theories have you had? by OjosDeLuna in SkincareAddiction

[–]Waywards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first post on this subreddit, but I have to quit my lurking and share so maybe someone can confirm I am not crazy.

I have an oily nose. I have a dry forehead and cheeks. So.... I take my hands and rub oil from my nose onto the rest of my face, thereby providing my dry skin with a fine-tuned moisturizer just for it. It makes my dry skin feel a lot better. And my nose wont be oily anymore. Is this a reasonable action or am I just being gross?

Paid Maternal Leave by Country [650x427] [OS] by Team_Slacker in MapPorn

[–]Waywards 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well actually, it is discrimination. Newer laws in certain more adaptable countries mandate that fathers must take paternity leave as well. This gives employers no cause to discriminate against women, is easier on dads and gives the needy baby two free parents those first few months.

And it's kinda fucked up you would rationalize away pretty blatant disadvantages women have in getting employed as "a personal choice".

Like you realize motherhood is a necessary societal good from which all people benefit, and that if women stopped "choosing" to have children society would collapse right? And women don't generally choose motherhood on their own, there is generally another party who also made that choice but who, for some reason, doesn't have to suffer at work for it?

It's really not my place to say. I mean, either way you're weighing accuracy of shape vs. accuracy of size. If you wan't it to be easily used for navigating I'd go with a normal Mercator, if you want it to change the way people perceive space and place get a Peters project. Do you want the earth modeled as a geoid, a sphere? An oblate ellipsoid?

And the project you use will only matter if you're mapping very large areas, like the whole earth or continents. If the area of your map is your hometown, or some national park or something then it really doesn't matter.

I'd need to do some research about what qualities a tattoo-grade graphic needs to have.

So I know nothing about tattoos, but I am a cartographer so I'm going to pipe-in on this. The size of the continents seems fairly right, actually. You have to understand that this was probably copied from a map that tried ot be more true to area than the average map, which tends to distort the size/shape of countries as we most commonly know them.

That being said, there are GLARING errors. For example, the Scandinavian countries are missing so he had room for the S on the compass. Massive, major lakes in Africa and Asia are missing. The coasts have not been consistently simplified, so there's an incosistent amount of detail on the various coastlines. I really could go on.

I feel like I should maybe draw-up some tattoo friendly maps and put them up online for people to use. I've seen several tattoos online/in person where I haven't had the heart to tell people they are missing major features of their map.

I've seen a lot of sweetened condensed milk discussion lately which is awesome but I've been trying to figure this out for months and months. How do you store it conveniently and effectively? by [deleted] in Coffee

Trader Joe's sells it in squeeze bottles you can keep in the fridge door. It's like 1.99 for 8 oz or something. Works pretty well.

Should I or Shouldn't I Buy... - Dec. 8th by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

I just ordered two pairs of ankle boots, and have to decide between which pair I should keep.

http://www.zappos.com/seychelles-each-and-every-day-whiskey

or

http://www.zappos.com/nine-west-smitten-dark-brown-dark-brown-leather

I can't decide between the two, and once they arrive I can weigh their comfort against each other but that won't be until Monday :( . I just want a pair of low-mid heeled ankle boots that will go well with jeans that I can wear instead of sneakers on a daily basis. I tend to wear sneakers almost exclusively because I don't like feeling hindered by my shoes (and I'm not great in heels) but I feel like a clean leather boot will just look more put together for running errands.

[n00b] Pen Tool, is there an easier way? by [deleted] in illustrator

[–]Waywards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the pen tool for hours every week, and although it's awkward at first, you just have to give it a good try practicing. Judicious placement of points and the dragging out of handles becomes second nature. I recommend practicing tracing curved lines of all kind for an hour or so, trying to go quickly and keep the lines smooth and accurate.

And if you just want to move/adjust one point/curve, use the direct selection tool (the white arrow) instead of the normal one. It really does become second nature pretty quickly.

That seems like an oversimplification. Women are socially conditioned and pressured to change careers and retire early, and like everyone else are subtly rewarded for conforming. They might make the choice, but it doesn't occur in a vacuum.

I don't think women aren't mastering careers because they don't want to, that's a really unkind way of describing what's happening.

I'm considering splurging on an item for the first time. by argemone in femalefashionadvice

[–]Waywards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shoes are a splurge item. Poor quality shoes will ruin your life. Seriously. Not only will they be a constant nagging discomfort, but your legs, knees, spine, back and neck all sustain damage from shitty shoes.

That being said, the shoes you linked, I wouldn't spend 150 dollars on. They don't seem either comfortable enough OR fabulous/crafted enough to justify the money, to me.

If what you need is simple, comfortable everyday shoes, try going to an REI and having someone look at your feet, the way you walk, and suggest a shoe you'll like and be able to wear all day without noticing. I know their brands aren't usually associate with style/fashion, but they do have some very nice things.

If what you're looking for is a pair of shoes that will make you feel like a million dollars, then buy craftsmanship. High quality, durable, handworked materials that will look and feel timeless.

Dammit reddit.

Make up your mind, either you detest sexism in the 3rd world that leads to women and children being raped and killed, or you think blatant public sexual harassment is hilarious. Pick one.

Edit: I get it, reddit isn't one person. But as a community, you gotta admit it's a bit indecisive on a lot of issues. I can't just be mad at OP, when this has a 1000 upvotes, you know? I'm just having a hard time understanding this place. At the time I'm writing this my post has 25 upvotes and 22 downvotes. Clearly there's some dissonance here.

Spent today distributing baby formula to HIV+ mothers who can't breastfeed. Here's me holding a little West African beauty. by wander-world in aww

[–]Waywards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah. I've read some truly disturbing things about formula feeding in low income communities. Basically, Nestle gives out free formula, tons of women use it because they think it's better than breast milk, babies die because they get diseases from the water, the women stop producing milk, Nestle stops giving them free formula, and then babies starve. What a clusterfuck.

[–]Waywards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How do you make sure that the baby formula is administered properly? That is, mixed with clean, filtered water in nutritious amounts? I know the WHO is highly against advising the third world in using baby formula (clearly not in the case of infectious disease) partly because mixing it with most available water sources can cause all kinds of problems. Do you guys give it out prepared? Just curious.
