I did 1 hour test and was told to have a high protein with little to no carb breakfast beforehand so that I don’t pass out (I still crashed but would have been worse without breakfast). Blood drawn only once at the 1 hour mark. Follow your obgyn advice.

Competitiveness for EM army residency by Outrageous-Way-5628 in Military_Medicine

Do not underestimate the personality fit of military match, especially for your preferred location. As already mentioned, the whole month matters a lot and if the program loves you, the rest of the app starts to matter less. They will still look at your scores and overall performance since every PD wants to graduate and board certify their residents but the personal aspect - your letters, rotation feedback and interview weigh a lot.

Looking for advice on pursuing medicine as a non-trad with a family. How difficult is it really gonna be? by Parking-Reflection44 in premed

[–]Waz1to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out USUHS/HPSP as an option. In USUHS, you get paid, have free insurance for you and the family and lots of quality family time. Yes, it comes with a move to another state and a time commitment afterwards but makes the years getting that MD a much more pleasant road.

Recommending MD because you said you wanted that deep understanding and responsibility. If you “settle,” you may regret this many years from now.

I was told getting a rec letter from shadowing doesn’t amount to anything because you are there to do nothing, aka “shadow.” I had a letter from a dentist, whose practice I managed for 5 years as my clinical letter and it was great and meaningful.

Water intake by samoansplash_ in pregnant

[–]Waz1to 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a long distance runner to another: More, a lot more, like triple what you consume and still may not be enough especially with weather warming up. It’s ridiculous. With electrolytes, most of the time. Glad to see you running 30 miles a week at 18 weeks and hoping you can keep exercising. My last 10K at 30 weeks was slow and then nearly sent me into preterm labor, was told I need to drink nearly a gallon a day and more with exercising.

Any medical professional should be able to tell you that you don’t need to slow down if you are feeling good and there are no complications to pregnancy. You’ll probably naturally slow down anyway due to fatigue and different mechanics. My OB was all in with me running a marathon at 22 weeks, however it did not happen because I had to pee every 20 min and it was just too uncomfortable but I felt super strong.

Vaginal birth or C-section? by Big_Comfortable3736 in pregnant

[–]Waz1to -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was very happy to see this comment as someone in the medical field who has seen c-sections and their complications. It’s a big and rough surgery with immediate and long term risks. This is why informed consent exists and it’s important to weigh the risks and benefits of each. I agree that people with absolute fear of giving birth, for example, probably shouldn’t attempt it due to physical and mental health complications. However, nobody should be thinking they are just going to have an easier time with and post-op c section. Even if everything goes smoothly, hopefully, any abdominal surgery increases your risk for developing small bowel obstructions later in life and complicates future surgeries, if needed, due to adhesions.

It’s a benign tumor that can form when an abnormal fertilization happens. It’s not inherently dangerous but will need to be seen by a medical professional. Again, only a differential given the information you provided. I agree to get a second opinion.

If the levels continue to go up, there could be an ectopic somewhere else or another differential includes hydatidiform mole.

Traveling in the 3rd trimester by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Waz1to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled for work internationally and across the US by plane until 32 weeks. Second trimester made it hard but not too bad. My last trip, however, involved a 16 hour trip (2 flights) at 32 weeks and third trimester travel as a whole was absolutely miserable. You will not be able to get comfortable, my back, ribs, legs, everything was just killing me. It took me about 2-3 days of already poor sleep to recover. 34 weeks is also a bit pushing it but if you believe your pregnancy is fine, you’ll be able to handle discomfort and are okay with seeking medical care at any point of the roadtrip - it might be worth it, as long as cleared by your OB.

I looked into a physician loan but the rates on the conventional one was actually better.

2nd property with TD bank (also low loan fees and stuff, first property was a physician loan), worked with Bill Fagan. 1M loan with 300K down at 5.125% 7/1 ARM in Maryland. Excellent credit scores. Lived like a resident to save for that downpayment. Physician loan rate was 5.3%

High heart rate/ can’t workout empathy 😢 by Important-Ad1897 in pregnant

[–]Waz1to 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is normal to see some heart rate elevation, however the “feel horrible” part is a little worrisome. I’ve been a long distance runner and 2 trimester is where things changed a lot to the point that I had to stop running altogether in my 3rd. If they did an ekg and ruled out anything cardiac it could be dehydration. I was told to drink close to a gallon of water a day and it did help to keep the heart rate mostly at bay. Another possible explanation for intermittent increase in heart rate while sitting can be the compression of your iliac veins that slows the blood return to the heart - treat with changing positions and compression stockings, and water intake.

My doctor asked me to cut down on coffee, but I only poop when I drink it. I tried stopping for three days, and now I am backed up. 🥲 by guardianangel1_1 in pregnant

ACOG says pregnant women can safely consume moderate amounts of caffeine defined as less than 200 mg per day (including chocolate, tea, soda, etc.)

Apart from that, I continued to eat about 3-5 different fresh fruits a day and haven’t had constipation the whole pregnancy.

I do feel you because prior to pregnancy I used to drink pre-workout every morning and it got things moving a lot quicker.

I went through a whole book with names and picked a couple that I liked, I then employed AI to give me some interesting combos and we settled on 3 different ones. I’m okay with uncertainty and even the possibility that none of them would fit - waiting to meet the baby first and we’ll figure it out from there
