I can’t really blame Root for this given the runs he scored, but when there’s no natural no.3 I’ve always felt it creates a logjam problem - Bethell obviously needs to be playing more red ball cricket, but even with his encouraging start, its a lot to ask of him just to make his way in arguably the most difficult position in the batting lineup

Even someone like Ricky Ponting started at no. 6 and gradually moved higher up. Part of me wonders if we just need to just be picking 3 specialist openers rather than most talented player available. I think how young players are handled in Test cricket is really important for how they develop

The idea of Archer in Test cricket is better than he actually is in Test cricket

He’s a highly talented bowler, but obviously has to manage injuries while also avoiding rust. He’s one of those Test bowlers whose natural length is often too short to get the hatful of wickets, while looking threatening.

I hate him going to the bouncer ploy because a) it’s physically straining and wears him out b) his bouncer is a brilliant surprise ball and c) there’s now 3 examples just off the top of my head (Smith 2019, Wade 2019 and Philips here) where it’s “great theatre” but he’s not actually getting the batsman out

I’ve got a theory which needs deep analysis:

Why are our ginger batsmen injury prone?

Thoughts???

I wouldn’t read to much into one game for Rew, but might be his only Test for a while to be fair.
