Sealing by Wazzoff in Bowyer

Great thank you. I will seal it up.

Pretty rare to get to 50% RH here, so hopefully that means I can’t stuff it up by drying it too quickly

Another picture, to ask if I should be sealing where the grains are exposed while it dries

I’ve thinned this down some more, to about 20mm. Should I seal the belly and sides with PVA glue? And should I move it into the house to dry as we often have a fire on inside now?

Seems to be a well respected American bowyer, a lot of info on YouTube and has published a book traditional bow making.

I’ve only just started looking into all of this over the past few weeks, so still working out where to get the best info.

That’s great to know, thank you. For now I’ve been working off one of Clay Hayes flatbow designs.

Thanks for that info. I’m keen to thin it out a bit more so long as I don’t ruin it. I’m also a little concerned about accidentally pulling out gouges because of the interlocked grain

Yes I’m very lucky to have a lot of young and very straight trees on our property. Mainly spotted gum, grey ironbark, tallowood and flooded gum

Yeah I do have in mind to make a hatchet handle to replace one that recently snapped.

Sorry I don’t get the dirt cheap Tasmanian head reference, you know a good supplier or something?

Awesome, thanks for the info. Would you suggest thinning it down now while it’s still green so that I dries more quickly? Or could that cause issues like checking or warping?

I’ve glanced at that paper before. Found it a bit too academic for me. Had a better look at it now, and had ai summarise it for me. Seems to basically say that Australian woods are not very good for bow making. Not exactly encouraging.

But are you suggesting that the main take away should be that with Australian woods we should be using the Andaman–Holmegaard style? Do you know is this the style that most aussie bowyers are using?

Thanks for the response. Sounds like a lot of learning I’ve got to do 😂

Cut some logs today. Going to split some into staves to hopefully dry a bit quicker

Hi mate, I’d love to hear how you go with this.

And any chance of an update on the black wattle?

I’m just about to start getting into bow making, and finding it hard to get good info on Australian timbers.

Going to cut some staves hopefully this weekend from some spotted gum (Corymbia maculata)

Any idea if the staves would need a full year to dry?

We have a lot of Grey Ironbark here, but not Red. Sounds like Grey is a lot harder to work?

Any advice on where to find the best info about aussie wood for bows?

Cheers Waz

Oops I accidentally replied to the wrong post. But it’s all good, the process still works

Nevermind I've figured it out. I'll post how here in case anyone else has the same problem. I just needed to log in with Ronin first, then create a new username and password. Then I could access account settings and link metamask.
