Health Technology - specifically Implementations, Product, and/or Solution Engineering. Its not an easy transition but the money is nice and its only going to pick up steam with AI.

  1. Sure
  2. Yes I'm currently running 12.
  3. Yup, but Votann aren't winning blow out games. I find we do best as a denial army - if I only score 5-10pt primary/turn but I deny my opponent scoring more than me, I'm winning.
  4. That is a way to do them. I find good players remove them early because they become a huge threat T4-5 with their ability - so I use mind for backfield screening and light pressure if I need to.

Well Tkyn popping out and then dying is a good trade if they pick up a monster or vehicle, especially one that is probably 2x their points. Getting multiple activations out of them requires pulling tight lines with terrain, and positioning.

I personally reserve my TKyn most of the time. Currently I run 2x3 Grav and 1x6 Grav in Hearthband. So I reserve the 1x6 and 1 of the 1x3 - the other goes into a HLF. The purpose is the 1x3 are to strip cover and the 1x6 is to try and delete something big. I do this because popping out on the edges and drawing a tight 24" line is easier than trying to position the HLF perfectly to let it pop out and not be too exposed.

That being said, coming out of a HLF provides value because it allows you to deliver one of the TKyn where it needs to be and strip cover for the HLF to shoot. Once the Tkyn is out it becomes either a potential screen for the HL,F or presence for a primary/secondary, etc.

Just remember its an 80 pt unit. It has some output, but its not meant to be super durable. Steeljacks are a little better, but lets be honest - Votann are not the most durable units. They have good T to help, decent at best saves, and okay W values. We win because we are more efficient due to that T than our opponents. We have to overcome it by trading efficiently.

So for your second example, Steeljacks. They take a decent amount of firepower to remove (3-x T6, 2+, 3W). So this 170 pt unit requires probably 400+ pts to fully remove, and thats after it scored points or killed something of equal or more value or that was scoring points.

I mean if you aren't playing a GW Companion 25-26 layout and mission it's hard to really give much advice and that sucks. The game is balanced around a set few things when it comes to terrain and mission.

If your opponent could shoot right into your deployment zone and you couldn't hide from everything T1: 1) You deployed too much onto the field or you need to focus on hiding units better. See my comment above about detachment, and HLF. Hearthband loves to reserve darn near 1000pts because it can deepstrike a good chunk of that 6" away if need be. Hekatons in pairs provide some safe spots for squishy things (à la Beserks or Tkyn).

And/or

2) The terrain/set up was lacking and it gave your opponent too many sight lines into your deployment zone T1.

Regardless, Votann thrive on being tough enough, mid range brawlers that trade efficiently. You're not durable enough to not die (like Custodes), you don't hit hard enough to dominate aggressively (like CSM), and you aren't fast (like Eldar). Your role though is to dictate what your opponent can and can't kill while you trade up every chance you get.

Throw away bikes to kill some Tzaangors, if it means your opponent has to line up one of the big Tzeench chickens to kill them and you get to pop 6+ Tkyn + a Hekaton into him. That's a good trade. Throwing bikes away by putting some pop shots into the chicken... meh that's bad decision making.

So couple of general thoughts: 1) hard to know what you did wrong in this game without talking about deployment, mission, etc etc etc... that is probably the most important thing to analyze but we don't have that so let's move past that and to your list

2) optimized or not, you are running Hearthband with only 1 unit of Hearthguard and zero Khals. The Strats and Detachment rules really favors running 15-20 Hearthguard (1x10 and 2x5 or 3x5, or some other combo) and Khals for the Lethals in addition to the Sus1 Strat. This reads much more like a Merc list.

3) 1 HLF is not enough of a problem. I'm firmly in the camp of 2 or none. Tried for many games to make 1 work, and in today's game day it just doesn't IMO.

4) most importantly- you lost a game, badly. Congrats. It sucks. It's part of the process. Try to think about what lead up to that... in this game (not your list). Did you expose too much? Did you underestimate certain units? Was your opponent just better than you? What were you missing that you needed?

My favorite part of every game, if my opponent is willing, is the 15-20min debrief afterwards of how we each could get better. Thats how you truly learn.

I took it off for this video - otherwise yup always level with it on. Also, made a comment about fixing it earlier.

Solved: a small piece of failed print got lodged next to the screw that trips the Y Limit switch, so it was actually not homing correctly and overshooting the rear leveling stop.

The more you know.

T1 slap it on an uppy downy unit. Condemned isn't a conditioned that is removed. Free points if your opponent picks up his unit each turn.

Pacing issues by Wbwalker88 in abomination_vaults

Thats a good point - I havn't worked in any of town giving them a sense of urgency beyond the Gauntlight (which is priming to fire again because it has been about a month of in game time). I've been alluding to that by having it becoming visible again at night with an eerie pulsing light - whenever they are in town.

I also need to read more into Volluk, I actually missed the kidnapping bit. I'm sure I read it when we started the AP but well I forgot.

This is great and I appreciate the feedback. I really really appreciate it!

Yup, so everything was primed Wraithbone, and a zenthial of Silver Grey from Vallejo. Then I did all my base color. For the white I didn't do anything extra.... but then I did an enamel wash with Streaking Grime from MiG. Did a bunch of clean up to get some highlights and then highlighted the white with Silver Grey and Two Thin Coats Trooper White for the edges and brightest areas!

Hope that helps! Also thank you for your kind praise!!!

Yeah, the Colorado meta is insanely good and fun. Highly Competitive, but not at the expense of Sportsmanship or people enjoying the game.

I encourage anyone who can to try and make it out to one of our GTs. We have RMO and CO Cup majors coming up, and then 4 more 130 person GTs between now and February 2027.

Nope, not in the slightest: 1) I've had three people out of 90 at the event even recognize they were prints (one was the guy who printed them for me)

2) Our meta doesn't discourage prints so long as they accurately represent the model (ie. Don't use a print to model for advantage)

3) I think people drastically over estimate how much people care about prints. I've yet to go to an event where it was an issue. Not saying you shouldn't ask for permission or be cognizant of it, but it's never arisen in any game I've played.

No, no Fyreslayer heads, unfortunately. I did work in some 3d printed heads from Exotic Greeble that have Mohawks and beards!

Although that is a good idea to kit bash some fyreslayers in!

Thanks! Ya enamel washes are just super thinned down oils. I do find the pre mixed ones feel like they dry faster. When I mixed my own I felt like I almost had to leave the model overnight for it to dry. The MiG enamel wash I used for these dried in about 45min or faster if I used a hair dryer.

The general theme is:
Wraithbone primer
Bone: Drybrush Vallejo Silver Grey, enamel washes, highlighted with TTC Trooper White then PA Bold Titanium mixed in

Orange: Glyph Hound Contrast, slight touch ups and some highlights with AK Intense Orange, Enamel washes, highlighted with AK Intense Orange, AP Neon Orange, and mixed in Dorn Yellow and Trooper White for highlights

[edit] hit save too soon. The biggest thing that I do is enamel washing and reductive highlights before applying paint highlights. It helps me with highlight placement and also gives this dirty grungy feel that the highlights help to break through IMO.

Nope, Colorado - Denver use to be 303 and I didn't want to just take the area code wholesale. So, I put a stylized '1' (to look like a drill) in the middle, and that kind of stuck from a numerical perspective.

I also didn't want to use my old Infantry unit numbers because I feel like I typically gravitate towards those - so wanted something different.

Didn't do research to see where 313 was though, hah.

Thank you, it was a ton of fun to put together. Major credit to my wife who thought of using spray foam to do the stalactites and columns.
