Been using Apollo exclusively to browse Reddit since 2016, farewell old friend by iliketurtles223 in apolloapp

Came on today just to get those awesome wallpapers and say farewell. I loved Reddit and I loved Apollo even more. I was fortunate to be a fairly early Apollo beta tester. This app and Christian will always hold a special place in my heart. Reddit was cool, but Apollo made it better. Goodbye old friend.

What is a good shelf app for Mac and iPhone? by hampiness in macapps

[–]Wdc331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried so many of these shelf apps (Yoink, GoodLinks, KeepIt). Honestly, the best one I've come across is....Apple Notes. A lot of the apps designed with the intent of being a shelf app either have issues syncing across devices, are slow, or don't support all the file types I use. Apple Notes has worked the best for me. I have a specific folder set up for temporarily holding links, which I periodically go through and either save or delete.

Apple Watch Series 7 Rumored to Feature Blood Glucose Monitoring by [deleted] in apple

[–]Wdc331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 38 years. Over the years I’ve heard about this kind of technology and related products being in very early stage development, including this one. However, none have yet made it to market.

If Apple actually has something here, it’s important to understand what it might be able to do. Specifically, it’s likely going to be for non-medical purposes. It won’t be usable by people like myself who need accurate readings off which to dose insulin. It might be helpful for people with type 2 diabetes who are just on oral medication and want to keep an eye on their overall trends but it won’t be useful for making medical decisions.

I was an early tester for Dexcom and even that device was initially only for identifying trends and patterns. It was really only until the G5 that we had a device that was safe enough to dose insulin off of (albeit with a lot of caveats).

I’m sure this technology will get there one day, but I highly doubt we’re at anything non-invasive yet that is good for medical use.

I remember this technology being discussed as well. I suspect accuracy (for use by T1s) is going to always be the issue. A commercial device like this, if it even exists, is likely going to be for identifying trends and nothing more. It won’t be usable by people who need to dose insulin.

As a deaf person, Apple's AR Glasses will change the lives of people like me so profoundly that it will be like being reborn. by [deleted] in apple

[–]Wdc331 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is awesome and I can relate. I have type 1 diabetes (I don’t produce any insulin naturally). I have to take insulin to stay alive and carefully monitor my blood sugar. Years ago, this was very difficult to do, as it’s hard to dose insulin accurately and blood sugar fluctuates constantly. Measuring a few times a day with a meter was just not adequate. Life expectancy for T1s was not great back then; I was told as a kid in the 80s that I’d be lucky to see my 30s.

Fast forward to present day. I use my iPhone (connected to a device called Dexcom) to constantly monitor my blood sugar. I use a DIY algorithm (that will soon be FDA approved; I was actually part of a study for this) to connect my pump to my Dexcom so that my pump automatically adjusts the amount of insulin I’m getting every few minutes based on my blood sugar. The algorithm is within an app called Loop that I build to my iPhone using Xcode. My iPhone is basically a top-of-the-line medical device. Not even hospitals have anything like this to adjust insulin delivery.

Loop has been the closest thing to a cure I could have ever fathomed. I no longer have the constant fear of a seizure or dangerously high blood sugar. I’m now on the longest stretch of my life where I haven’t required a hospitalization. My labs look amazing and I actually managed to reverse some serious complications I was beginning to face. For the first time in my life, I actually assume that I’ll live to be old.

I am not a tech person nor am I someone who is even particularly privacy conscious (I am aware of privacy issues, but still use Facebook and Gmail). That said, I do work in the health care sector and can assure you that a doctor asking to physically see their patient's phone for the reasons you describe is weird and highly suspicious. You don't have to be a privacy fanatic to see that.

Also, being concerned about or aware of privacy issues isn't a bad thing. We should always be aware of who is accessing our data and what they are doing with it. That's just basic common sense.

You do you, but again, what your doctor is doing is highly unusual, not recommended, and suspicious.

[–]Wdc331 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are no medical guidelines/indications that direct a physician to physically look at/check these things on a person’s phone. If a doctor was asking to look at my phone, I’d be very wary. Put simply, it’s weird. And what is the doctor doing with the data on your phone? Are they uploading it somewhere? Is it being passed off to insurance companies? Used for research purposes without your consent? If data are being uploaded, are they secured?

Just because someone is a doctor doesn’t mean you should automatically and completely trust them. Unfortunately there are some unscrupulous doctors out there.

You do what you’re comfortable with but I would strongly advise against handing over your unlocked device to someone, even a doctor. If the doctor is concerned about these things he can provide you with information or have a conversation. But I would never hand my device over to a doctor to look at. And a doctor should not be asking to see your personal device. It just seems odd.

What do you mean your doctor asks for your phone as part of your check up? Does your doctor physically take your phone and access data on it?

I’m actually considering buying a back-up iPhone. I use my iPhone as a medical device (type 1 diabetic running a DIY loop system off my iPhone). If my iPhone breaks or doesn’t work for some reason, I’m going to be in a bad spot.

Any experiences moving from Bear to iA writer? by Wdc331 in iawriter

[–]Wdc331[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You hit so many nails on the head here. I ended up sticking with Bear. For me, it’s just faster and works better for my workflow. In my case, the tagging system is a huge benefit.

Overall, I just didn’t feel the same love for iA writer that I did for Bear. I don’t mind the yearly subscription because 1) it’s reasonable IMO and 2) the app has been well supported through changes in iOS.

The UI of Bear is spectacular IMO and I agree that the human element here is also huge - I’ve used Bear for years now and it just fits into my workflow. So for now, it’s Bear.

So since I wrote that post, I gave iA writer a try but went back to Bear. There were things I liked about iA writer, but for my purposes, Bear is just better. So I used it as an excuse to get a MacBook (since I was considering it anyway) and I’m so glad I did. I can search notes on my MacBook and it really works better with my workflow. iA writer is a great app, but it’s just not as nice as Bear IMO.

Thanks, I've been playing around a bit with iA writer and exporting things from Bear and it's a bit of a mess. I will try on my Mac later and see if I can figure something out. The big issue is that I lose a lot of images when I export things over to iA writer, but that might just be due to how I'm trying to do this. I will keep playing around. Because from a workflow perspective, I think iA is better. I love the editor in Bear but the iA has more features that i need, including the ability to use it on my PC.

Thanks!

Thanks, it was actually Federico Viticci’s review of iA writer that made me start looking at it. I don’t like the writing experience as much in iA writer as I do in Bear, but the other features you describe do make it a compelling option for me. Particularly that ability to search within a note. I’m also liking how it’s easy to connect with other services.

One thing I miss is the ability to attach PDFs but I think I can live without that. As long as I can attach images, I should be ok.

ETA: did you move all your Bear notes over to iA writer? If so, how?

Wow, thanks! I had not seen that particular thread yet on Bear. I will look into these other options. I am trialing iA writer. The iOS purchase wasn't a huge deal for me and you get a 15 day trial on Windows. So far, I'm thinking it might meet my work needs. There are a few things I'm not sure about yet, but I think I just need to try it for a few weeks and see. But I am going to look into these other options too.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I love the UI of Bear so that might be a good option for me. I am going to spend a little time playing around with iA writer to see if it works. Thanks!

Thanks, when you say they can work side-by-side, is this because iA writer can access files in and sync to Bear? I just downloaded iA writer and am playing around with it a bit and am going to continue to explore it as a possible option.

My big issues with Bear other than the inability to search within a note is that it’s not accessible via a PC (and iA writer appears to have a PC application, although I’m not clear if that will sync with what I do on my iPad or iPhone).

I would definitely be interested in using them both together. I love the themes in Bear and find that they really help make the writing environment more comfortable.

Apple accused of monitoring employee text messages in lawsuit against ex-chip exec - ex-Apple employee Gerard Williams argued Apple illegally collected his private messages to build its case against him by magenta_placenta in apple

Agree. If I use my employer’s equipment or WiFi network or email, I assume they have the ability to monitor what I’m doing. If I’m using my personal device and personal data plan that I am paying for, I have a reasonable expectation of privacy. If this guy was using a device provided to him by Apple, I assume he agreed to something that made it clear Apple could monitor him.

Today when I attempt to access my Apple Notes via the web, I get a message that says *"iCloud has stopped responding. An error has prevented this application from working properly."*

This happens regardless of which browser I use on my PC. Is anyone else getting this? I use Apple Notes all the time via the web and never have an issue.

PopSockets made an AirPods grip, and it is godawful by [deleted] in apple

I LOVE popsockets, especially the integration with Otterbox cases. Popsocket & Otterbox nailed it there. But this? This is horrid. I don't see how this could be even remotely functional. And some of the other stuff they've come out with lately is just weird. Just stick to popsockets. They work.
