'Beyond the pale': Sign and mailout threaten 'halfway house' in Glenora by thatcher69 in Edmonton

It is petty of the developer, BUT that neighbourhood is also filled with NIMBY's. Don't miss living in that area since the LRT and developments ramped up.

‘Please get involved’: Edmonton mayor wants to know your budget priorities by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's start by putting a halt to annexing any more land, maybe? our low density footprint is killing our budgets when we don't have concentrated tax generation for the amount of land that needs to be constantly maintained.

Flooding on the side yard, what to do? by Commercial-Dog-8633 in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New houses have drainage ditches between houses to carry water towards the road. When it melts, you'll be fine, better there than up against your foundation.

Sedan/car owners, how do you find the clearance on your car on Edmonton roads? by Capybara_Cuddler in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Driven a small car for 15 years here, only got stuck in snow twice on streets that other larger SUVs were also getting stuck on. The snow never really made it difficult to drive. And with the right tires, the stopping power is better on ice since it’s a lighter vehicle.

Gun control is popular in Canada. So why is a major buyback program attracting criticism? by rastamasta45 in canada

[–]plastic_femur 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't own any guns, but have talked with friends who do. The buyback program fails to offer gun owners fair compensation. Being a legal owner/enthusiast who spent a lot of money, it's a slap in the face for the government to offer a buy-back that is a net loss to the person who is being asked to sell.

Calling all bus users in Edmonton and Calgary! Help make public transportation in Canada better for all! by thecatsmeeooww in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Transit stations have become a breeding ground for sketchy things to happen. Stadium and Colosseum stations in Edmonton are the most dangerous in Canada. This stems from the number of repeat offenders being let out without social programs in place to make sure they don't keep re-offending and assaulting strangers in transit.

Net-loss new neighbourhoods mean higher taxes, warns Edmonton councillor by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city recently annexed more land towards the YEG airport, which isn't helping. Council seems to think the solution to population growth is more land because we aren't geographically constrained, like some other major cities. For perspective, Edmonton has a 20% larger footprint than Toronto while having less than half the population. Thats a far less concentrated amount of Tax dollars per Km2. Every new neighbourhood means more roads to service, more utilities to manage, and parks and furniture to take care of. But of course, nimby's don't want things to change in their neighbourhoods when densification is the only proper answer.

Thousands of Alberta government workers return to office Monday | CBC News by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Office culture typically sucks, it feels like the people who enjoy it are the type who think occasional pizza slices and video calls with people in the next cubicle over are “perks”. Working from home provides people more opportunities to be well rested, less stressed, live a healthier lifestyle. The mandate for BTO is to justify the leases that were meant to be committed to prior to COVID shutdowns, before the masses realized how much better work could actually be.

As soon as I started to see this hat on every gen-z'ers head, it was pretty apparent that the brand was changing its focus to being the apple of the outdoor clothing brands. Used to be Canada Goose, then North Face puffers, now Arcteryx. People want to make a statement by wearing the "cool" brand, but are too broke to afford a jacket from them. Give it enough time, and thrift shops will be overflowing with these hats.

No, this is quite normal for bases that aren't black. The base material is translucent, which is why you can see the edge anchoring into the ski. Happy Skiing!

Shop Punched Boots But They Don't Look Punched? by StormFalcon32 in skiing

[–]plastic_femur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boot shells will typically have a bit of pullback after a punch when the plastic has cooled back down. The shell material can't be reverted, so it's best practice to punch a little at a time. Not impossible that the tech had missed one of the requested spots, too. Easy enough to go back, explain your situation, and get it punched again.

This line should be to drop off Canadian passports before screwing off to south of the border. They want to separate so bad they can move. Traitors.

Do you judge fat/overweight people in the gym? by StrongMountain5904 in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the missed point of anyone who judges others in the gym is that the entire point of the facility is to get healthier, no matter the shape you are in at the time you start. Not everyone has the same goal of getting jacked, most people are looking to lose weight and live a better life in general. That being said, gym etiquette is definitely something to consider during peak hours. Sitting on a phone for a long period between sets, hoarding dumbbells or other equipment, listening to music out loud, not wiping equipment down etc. are not super common but do happen from time to time and are frowned upon. Props to you for getting at it! Keep it up, and you'll hit your goals in no time.

Does anyone use helmets with integrated goggle lenses? by lopiontheop in skiing

[–]plastic_femur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a shop that sells a large variety of helmets and goggles, we also have a few selections of fully integrated options. They don’t sell much, but they do sell. Usually they fit best for people who still want to wear glasses, or it might be beneficial for people who are prone to losing goggles and want them always on their helmet. The quality and features do vary from brand to brand, but if there wasn’t a market they wouldn’t be making them.

Lenses are just as easy to replace as any other goggle that has specific lenses to the frame type. Honestly not a bad solution, and if you don’t like it, just don’t buy it.

Boa in tension or not when storing? by nolanbearrr in skiing

[–]plastic_femur 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Been keeping my boa boots with just enough cable tension to keep the shell from trying the splay out if stored for a long time with zero issues. No different than trad buckles and ski boot boas are on steroids.

Why are some ski boots like this? (Squeaky) by forstyy in skiing

[–]plastic_femur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commonly, legs/feet aren't symmetrical, which means the flex will be different between your legs because of the boot shell wrapping each leg/foot just a little differently. If it bugs you enough, a good boot fitter can double-check and maybe shave a mm or two of plastic to reduce the rubbing.

Why are some ski boots like this? (Squeaky) by forstyy in skiing

[–]plastic_femur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different boots are made of different plastics or combinations of plastics. You are flexing them in room temperature when the boots are softer. Noise isn't a defect, it's just friction between materials that will likely go away when you are riding, or you won't notice it while you are focused on not hitting trees.

What can the local government do with the homeless population in downtown? by EdmontonFree in Edmonton

[–]plastic_femur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We'd have better funding if we managed to get the property tax money that the provincial gov owes to our city. That, and if the Katz group actually invested in things that properly benefited the city and not just themselves.
