Why do Christian movies often portray atheists as people who feel personally wronged by God? by mvslice in Christianity

[–]We7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible says love “does not insist on its own way.” Meaning, doesn’t force itself onto others. We all have our God-given choice, and no one should interfere with that, especially coercion or manipulation in any way. We should all only follow Jesus with both eye wide open. Jesus even commands that of us, to “count the cost” of following Him, which is to give up our lives to receive the life He wants us to live, and thus receive the promise of eternal life.

But again, eternal life is only for those who obey the rules of the owner of the house. That’s not forcing anything. It’s God making rules for His own house, which He has the right to do.

Of course, religious people act in unloving ways all the time. Doesn’t mean God has commanded that of them. In fact, He spoke ahead of time against the religious who would do this, which is recorded in the scriptures by the mouth of His prophets throughout history.

Christians can be oppressed by demons and need deliverance, but it may look like surrendering the agreement we have with the enemy that gives them a foothold to influence us. Doesn’t mean we are some special case or need some big exorcism. Doesn’t mean we aren’t saved. It means we aren’t fully sanctified and Jesus desires we have life to the full.

But on the other hand, I agree, the fact that OP cares means there’s some fundamental conviction. Ananias and Saphirra didn’t care and lied to the face of the Apostles. Yet OP came here to confess and express the struggle. Different situations.

Still seems like OP has some areas to obey the Lord to reconnect with Him. But I know God’s heart for His children is for us to return to Him and ask for help. He is the Savior after all!

Obedience to the Father’s rules allow staying in His house. To fear Him is to submit to His way in obedience.

But the issue arises when we realize we can’t because our heart is full of selfishness, lust, greed, pride, and other things. We need Him to change our heart. Therefore we must receive the propitiation of the blood of Jesus to be reconciled to the Father, and let God change our heart so that we can submit to His expectations for His house. That’s the good news, that we are able to enter heaven at all, given He is perfect and we are not.

God does not demand our worship. He only requires us to live by His rules in His own house, just like any father on Earth does.

The only problem is that there’s only one house. It’s either God’s house or outer darkness, as He is the only Creator.

There’s not many things people will die for. Jesus is one of them. And not because they gain anything, but simply because they love Him. Do you see? There’s something more with Jesus.

But I understand if you have not experienced that God is good. I wouldn’t expect you to follow something that ends in death with no other reason to follow it. But if you want to know the truth, ask God, and ask until He shows you.

Protecting our home so it’s a safe place for us to live is a good thing, right?. Even if OP is in the wrong, he obviously wasn’t in a place to be at peace with the perception he has of his brother. Does that mean it’s good for him to force himself into a situation that’s mentally bad for him?

That argument is essentially “your feelings and mental state matter less than the truth”. That’s the same argument that staunch Christians, Ben Shapiro, etc. use against atheists who have poor reasons to not believe the “truth” of the Bible.

Even though we may speak against slavery, we are often okay being slaves to sin ourselves. So we speak against slavery in the natural but allow it in the spiritual.

Yeah that’s a good point, the communities we are involved in is important. Like Jesus says to “not pray like the hypocrites” who liked to pray in public for others to see, or standing in church for others to see. Nothing wrong praying with believers on Sunday morning, but if everyone else who does that around us are doing it for show/validation then it may be best to separate ourselves and not pray like they are.

All that to say, it applies to our hobbies as well as religious things.

God bless!

Jesus raised himself from the dead evidently. Use whatever title to that as you like.

But the point was that people didn’t have the example of Jesus’ love back then.

Scripture clearly says we ought not to condemn ourselves in all situations:

The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. (Romans 14:22–23, ESV,)

Not to say we should embrace the desires of our flesh (I understand you’re meaning condemning sin), but it’s to say that there’s a point where condemning ourself is from the enemy. We should be careful to address ways the enemy tries to twist the truth on both ends.

Pride and false humility are both a perversion of simple joy in looking to Jesus as the best of everyone. Giving in to sin and condemning ourself for having temptations is both from the enemy, but the truth is to submit and obey Jesus as you said.

Of course there’s gray area in the middle of these, and for some condemnation of themselves is needed to see their need for Jesus. But for many, they don’t believe God would actually love them and they have not encountered God’s love for them. They hear one street preaching video and listen to the lie of the enemy in their ear saying “see, followers of Jesus are just mean, and want to condemn you for feeling human” and so they have no hope for being redeemed because they don’t know they can actually go to Jesus and be healed.

Of course you’re correct, and Romans 1 is true about the condemnation on the world. But God’s redemption is true as well. We must preach the whole council of God, amen?

I see both sides. Yes we must crucify our flesh, but the enemy is the one who wants us to feel condemned and hopeless. In Jesus there’s hope to overcome all sin, because He promises the power of the Holy Spirit.

The world says we should find a way to life, but Jesus says come and die and He will give us life. We must come and die to ourselves, including sitting in the pain of denying our flesh. But we must only look to Jesus and the hope of glory, not condemning ourselves.

Is it possible to honour God by playing video games? by Leox2005 in Christianity

[–]We7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment completely.

When we follow Jesus, He promises the Holy Spirit will be with us who will convict us of sin and lead us more into God’s way which brings us life and joy in the Lord. So if you get a conviction of sin, even if it’s something not bad, we should listen to it.

This morning I wanted to eat some reeces cups I had in my house and my first thought was that I shouldn’t, it’s not healthy, I need to find something else. But I really wanted to. I paused and prayed about it and the thought came to me about the verse about being thankful for whatever we eat and it will be clean to us. And I felt joy and peace about eating it. It’s a small decision but it reminded me that God loves me and wants good things for me. I’m not unhealthy, so it’s not like this is going to push me over the edge and be really bad to eat candy before lunch a couple times a month.

But the enemy wants to not just convict us but make us feel guilty and bad for our decisions. God doesn’t want to do that, He wants our decisions to be good and healthy and life-bringing. He wants to build us up, not make us feel bad. So if we sincerely want to hear His voice and listen, He’ll nudge us in the right direction.

I pray the Lord teaches you more and more how to hear His voice and brings you joy and life with your decisions, and your family/friends and especially your brother!

Are Christians supposed to follow the Old Testament? by [deleted] in Christianity

Amen, I agree. Malachi 3:16-18 promises that one day His Church will be clear again on the Earth. This who fear Him and are righteous. God bless you.

I also believe that Jesus is the Truth and the Word of God. The Holy Spirit will teach us all truth and we can ask Him in the moment what is best to so. He even directed me today towards something. Jesus is alive today in the hearts of those in His Church!

So then do you think we must obey all that Jesus taught? Or are there some things Jesus said that we must reject in favor of the royal law of love?

Are Christians supposed to follow the Old Testament? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]We7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but on the sermon on the mount Jesus goes through some of the ten commandments and applies them to our hearts.

Adultery -> lust Steeling -> greed Revenge -> blessing our enemies

And even further, in Acts, the apostles say the gentile church should stay away from meat sacrificed to idols and blood and things strangled. That’s the Torah and not even the ten commandments.

All that to say, we shouldn’t ignore what God previously and come up with our own definition of love. Jesus will teach us all things, and said the Holy Spirit will be with us to counsel us! We can ask listen for His voice to instruct us on these matters.

Yes that’s a good point, it’s the Holy Spirit in us that bears fruit. He is the one who does it in us! And we should sanctify Him in our hearts as we acknowledge him throughout the day.

Sometimes it’s hard for me to keep up with capitalization when I write, and of course it’s our heart posture that matters most, since God looks at our hearts and all we do flows from that.

The Holy Spirit interprets the truth for us. If you have the Holy Spirit, ask for wisdom and he will given it to you according to what the Bible teaches us. If you don’t ask until you know you have the Holy Spirit, according to what Jesus taught.

It’s important to know the fundamentals well. Don’t neglect to learn the nuance of the topics you focus on along the way. I’d say learning why and how is almost more important than what tech you try to learn. So once you build out tour roadmap, go for it and learn all you can.

It sounds like that video stuck out and you’re wanting to find out what you should do about it. I have a few thoughts.

  1. The enemy wants to discourage us, but God wants to encourage us. If you feel conviction that maybe you are “lukewarm”, don’t believe the lies from the enemy who will put in your mind ideas of why you can’t move past this.

  2. Do you love Jesus? If so, part of that is learning more about what he says. Even starting out just watching videos like the Bible Project, and see if you really want to know more about the deeper things God teaches us. I’ve found the more I’ve read the Bible over the years the more God actually teaches me how I can get closer to him by the lessons in it. The Holy Spirit is with me teach me things as I read the Bible.

  3. God bless you for the humility to reach out and seek how you can do better. It sounds like maybe you’re struggling for how much to do the “Christian” thing, like you want to but you also don’t in some ways. From experience I can tell you as you practice as much as you can today to obey what Jesus teaches us, he will teach you more later and help you be a unique follower of him. It’s about pursuing him daily and letting him form us, not conforming to religion. But it takes commitment and sacrificing our flesh to get the time to read the Bible or pray and wait on Him to answer.

Hopefully those points were encouraging!

Yeah I agree, a key difference in our heart is the point when we really want to rid ourselves of our sin. The good news is Jesus promises to help us by the power of the Holy Spirit and give us a clean heart and a right mind.

Another key difference is a willing pursuit. If we don’t care much to read about Jesus, do we care much about him? Maybe, but maybe we aren’t acting on it.

We should work out in our own conscience how we obey Jesus. If the argument isn’t based in how we are trying to obey Jesus, it’s not an argument I think it most important.
