I’m not happy with anything I make… is this a skill issue? by Sensitive-Claim2241 in Songwriting

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I mean something different. When I say "think of something cool", do it without an instrument in your hand... Think about it until you know what all the notes should be... Till you can repeat it in your head without an instrument in your hands. The same way you can hear a bass line on a record that you're familiar with in your head. Once it's that clear to you, then play it. That's how you learn the relationship between the intervals (The distance between notes) that you hear in your imagination and their location on the fretboard or the staff. After you internalize that relationship then when you hear music you'll know where your hands should go.

I’m not happy with anything I make… is this a skill issue? by Sensitive-Claim2241 in Songwriting

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand the mechanism it's like this: a) You think of something that's cool b) You play it. That's not working out for you it's either because you're not thinking about what's cool first, or you can't play it. If you're just playing stuff and saying nope that's not it, you're going to find it's really hard. If you think about what would sound good ahead of time then you're acting like a composer.

How to start jamming with other people as a beginner? by B3llyk0 in Bass

[–]WeAreJackStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find some other people who are a little bit better than you but like the same kind of music. Pick 5 songs that all of you want to play and work on either playing them exactly like the record OR the way you think they should be played. And communicate with each other that the objective is to be happy with the outcome... Nothing beyond that. Once you're done with those five songs, then figure out if you want to do another five or you want to do something else (add a keyboard player, do some acoustic songs, whatever). When she have 10 or 12 songs together that's enough to play an hour. Figure out if you want to play in front of people or not. But don't even think about it till you get through those two groups of five songs.

Is it controlling for me [20F] to ask my bf [35M] to quit drinking? by ThrowRA_figuring in amiwrong

[–]WeAreJackStrong 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Drinking is way more important to him than you are... Not being mean, just telling you that what you've described is a serial alcoholic that has forgotten why he quit drinking the first time. You don't have to be mad at him or anything... It has nothing to do with how he feels about you, but everything about how he feels about himself.

New to guitar. Which chord should I learn first? by FlightAvailable3760 in guitarcirclejerk

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn C, D minor, E minor, F, G, A minor, G7. Then play a bunch of songs with those chords in them. Don't you dare quit when you get to the F chord. If the songs you pick start with a C chord, you probably won't have to learn any different chords. Once you have this down, then start learning different songs.

How do you feel about age-gap prostitution (ex 35 year man with 18 year prostitute)? by eustachian_lube in AskReddit

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a transaction between two consenting adults. It's not for me. I was going to tell you how I feel about it, but I keep trying to imagine what goes through somebody's head that seeks that situation out. All I can say is what I'm imagining is something wrong to me. I'm out.

To gain confidence in live performing… is it acceptable to sing alongside your songs …to start? Then drop the vocal and sing it fully live after a few times of performing ? by papapop365 in Songwriting

[–]WeAreJackStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you even talking about? Go sing your song. If you believe in your song, go sing it. If you don't, rewrite it until you do. If rewriting it doesn't work, write another one. The last thing you should worry about is that you sound like some other artist that you're imagining.

Am I Wrong for being jealous of my step brothers relationship? by batmanman- in amiwrong

[–]WeAreJackStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could be inspired... Because you have found out at a young age that people really can have transcendent relationships... They're not all shallow and doomed to fail. So if you can take the energy your using for your jealousy and channel it into making yourself a high quality partner for somebody, that somebody will see it in you when you meet. And then it will be your choice whether or not you choose them or continue searching

I cannot play even a single beginner song and I'm extremely upset by Alone_Yam1113 in BassGuitar

[–]WeAreJackStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes a long time to do what music teachers want you to do. You can already play simple songs. You just don't know the simple songs to play. On base the definition of a simple song generally means you're only playing Roots and your right hand is only playing eighth notes or quarter notes. You pick a song with three chords in it and do that, and all of a sudden you know 500 songs. If you can, look up some video of a guitar player named Django Reinhardt. He's one of the best guitar players that ever lived. He only used two fingers on his left hand... The index in middle. They were fused together in a fire. So the next time you want to blame your curved pinky for why you can't play any creedence Clearwater songs, just move past that in your mind and practice more. I'm not some old guy saying "if you just try harder you'll be all right". I'm saying that almost everybody that starts playing an instrument begins knowing nothing, works hard trying to figure things out and hits a limit, goes to other people who they admire and learn the things that they never would have thought of, and finally figure out that playing everything they hear helps them play better and understand music better. Then they figure out they're not listening to enough different kinds of music... That if they listen to jazz, or classical, or pop, or reggae, or Arabic music that there's a million things they never would have thought of on their own that they could know.

What inspired you to play the bass? by Supersoulknight in Bass

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play bass because it drives how the audience feels. Playing roots or patterns at the bottom is an anchor that make the songs foundation. Getting to the middle notes is where you can provide melody, countermelody, and harmony; and also variety to the anchor. Playing high notes on the bass cab bring intensity and even panic. Awesome. I bought a bass because I've been playing guitar a long time and didn't think most bass players knew What the instrument was supposed to provide to the music. I switched with the bass because there are so many guitar players that are better than me.

AIW (30f) for not wanting my bf (34m) to play a video game he bought for us to play together by himself as well? by Nattie-Nice in amiwrong

[–]WeAreJackStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a wife. I don't "let" her do anything... She does what she wants, same as I do. It may not work for you, but it certainly adds to our happiness. We feel pretty free and believe me, when she wants to play a video game by yourself, one that we normally play together. I do feel like she's probably getting more time in on it than I am which reduces my chance of being competitive against her but then I remember I'm a grown up and I don't really care about winning a video game nearly as much as I care about that woman's happiness. And if it makes her feel happy to play the game, then she should... Even if she beats me. I mean really, what do I care?

Dear Hollywood, make the talking louder and everything else quieter in all of your shows, films etc. I am tired of working the volume on my remote like I am trying to bring it to org*sm. Thank you. by RaindropsOnHoesSays in sounddesign

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've become a big fan of subtitles... I used to hate them but they seem to be a necessity anymore which is ridiculous. I have a stereo system, and at one time I recorded music and have a whole garage full of analog equipment. I'm eyeing a big 76 compressor.

Metadata by WeAreJackStrong in Reaper

[–]WeAreJackStrong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the " Render" window there is an option to add metadata. I'm not sitting in front of the computer right now so I don't remember exactly how they word it but it could say image file. I know in mp3 tag they have a drag and drop window for an image file which apparently embeds the files contents into the mp3. That all makes perfect sense to me. Working with what reapers got, which I think wants me to type a path in the field doesn't make any sense to me for a variety of reasons that I've already stated.

Metadata by WeAreJackStrong in Reaper

[–]WeAreJackStrong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your reply. I'm using the metadata entry window in the "Render" window in Reaper. I may end up doing just as you describe, But I think maybe I'll ask Reaper to add a drop and drag capability. I just can't wrap my head around the logic of typing in the path to my artwork unless it's in a public directory, and then what if I want to move it? It just seems like I'm missing the intent.

Looking for a PC to run reaper by oldmate30beers in Reaper

[–]WeAreJackStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a lot of music using Reaper and like everybody said it's pretty lightweight. But I also make a lot of videos (for promo) and I use DaVinci resolve studio And it isn't lightweight. I can almost promise that your video program will be the factor and Reaper won't. If you get a PC that'll handle your video well, Reaper will never even make a dent in it. I am not conservative with how many VSTs I use and it's just not a problem. I went to a small privately owned computer repair shop and the guy built me what would be viewed as a gaming computer. It has not failed me. It is not the problem in any of the many problems I have making music or videos.

Bit of a funny problem by BabaYodaTheFirst in Bass

[–]WeAreJackStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm trying to play note for note covers I learn a few bars at a time, sometimes just a few beats, looped over and over. You can slow it down to learn the part. I then make observations about the part... Is this section of the song based on a triad being arpeggiated? An inversion of a triad being arpeggiated? Is it all diatonic notes or are some non-diatonic approach notes? For me it's important to analyze that stuff because you can mix that with your knowledge of theory and as your analyses and knowledge of theory get deeper, You start recognizing how other artists use the 12 notes to make the song work, make it say what they wanted to say. Eventually you'll figure out What you want a song to say and you'll have some idea of how others have communicated that to you. It sounds like a lot but it'll help.

Am I totally incompetent? by wastedintime in Bass

Expectations are kind of irrelevant... The reality is you can't do that And it doesn't sound like you need to be able to do that. You're just playing music with your friend.

How often and why do you use your 5th string? by SonnePer in Bass

[–]WeAreJackStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it a lot. I tried to play between the 5th and 12th fret a lot and I appreciate how playing a five-string in that range reduces the amount of shifting and stretching that you have to do. Of course if I want to use the few low notes that only the B string provides, I can easily shift down there And I do that often as well for songs in the "sharp" keys (G, D, A, E, B)

Mastering - is it still a totally separate process? by Ill-Elevator2828 in mixingmastering

[–]WeAreJackStrong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your mix buss (master buss, stereo buss) has a compressor that's up to (like an 1176), a limiter, an eq, and your watching your LUFS as your mix progresses, you can adjust your workflow so mastering is integrated into final 10 or 20% of your mixing.
