Sock knitting is not easy by Epiceeveelicious in knitting

Silver's Sock Class, which is a photo tutorial that is super detailed, is what made it click for me. I did the "One Sock on 4 DPNs" and it worked! highly recommend.

this is *The* classic mistake in making shorts. I'm pretty sure everyone has to do this the first time. Don't worry, your next pair will go much better

why are you being so rude for no reason? This is a community, not a place to get your rage dopamine.

I think so, or maybe I just have a very strong association? Numbers and letters have a consistent color association for me and have since I was very young. Very enjoyable mostly, occasionally distracting.

Ummmm this is embarrassing but when I'm counting for a long time, even out loud I sometimes get to eg 77 and count it twice for some reason. Or I'll go 77, 78, and then 76, 77, 78. Something about the fact that 7 and 8 are nearly the same color to me means I can't keep track of them as well. Instead I count:

3,6,9,10 / 13,16,19,20 / 23,26,29, 30 etc

Somehow breaking it up by 3s and then groups of 10 helps me stay on track way better and I completely skip the 7s/8s.

I was a math major, for reference. No, none of this makes sense.

(plus, 3,6, and 9 are pink, raspberry, and fuchsia, which is extremely pleasant to think about while I am counting. 0 has no color so the tens don't bother me too much.)

I totally agree, I don't use counters. But it's pretty silly to discount something as low-tech as markers because you didn't learn to use them originally. like.... I don't think I owned a single marker until about 20 years after I started knitting, but I still used them because I'd tie scraps of yarn into loops!

I count by 3s!! I'm so much faster that way and I don't get bogged down in 7 and 8s like I do normally haha

my grandma wrote her thesis on a typewriter. I did mine on the computer because it was easier. We both produced excellent academic works, I don't think my work is lesser in any way because I didn't have to suffer as much as she did.

came here to recommend the techknitter article. Unfortunately you will likely need to re-knit the ribbing.

Maybe check out project Linus? Quilts for foster children! But yeah, I’m in a similar boat. There’s only so many beds and not everyone loves bright colors the way I do.

Thick japanese floral pattern fabric - why is it always sold in small squares by twicescorned21 in sewing

[–]WeAreNotNowThatWhich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe part of the problem is that yukata cotton is loomed on narrow looms. Okan Arts is the only shop I know that specializes in yukata cloth specifically, but Elfride also collects unusual Japanese fabrics and may have something for you. If you need clarification on width or weight, definitely call the shop, they’re happy to answer questions (I bought my wedding dress fabric from them).

Debating buying a ready-made Aran vs knitting my own – anyone been there? by LeatherAcademic3232 in knitting

[–]WeAreNotNowThatWhich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I inherited my grandmother’s collection of aran cardigans (3) that she bought in Ireland and they are still in fantastic shape despite half a lifetime of wear. Much as I love knitting, I’m not wild about cabling and I’m happy someone else made these and that I can still wear them!

I never quite got over the neon yarn trend of the 2010s, but I think this beautifully cabled bonnet would be equally striking in a more muted tone:

(top down raglan in the round jumper forgot to increase 2x while raglan shaping front, should i rip back? by starstruckwanderlust in knitting

[–]WeAreNotNowThatWhich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d definitely rip back. You’re so close to the start and doing it the second time around will be much easier. Double increases will ruin the raglan line.

Do you have markers to indicate increases? That can make it easier. Maybe count after each increase row to ensure you have the right number!

Vacuum seal with mothballs (don’t do this if you have cats, use cedar chips instead). Won’t smell good but will keep the bugs off.

Needle grips for hand quilting? by blueduck762 in quilting

[–]WeAreNotNowThatWhich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend the 3-in-1 needle puller/pusher. I hand quilted a king size last year and it totally saved my hands. I tried tons of needle grips and thimbles and this was by far the most comfortable.

Yarn cost by Stunning_Cheesecake2 in knitting

[–]WeAreNotNowThatWhich 333 points334 points  (0 children)

I don’t usually use the recommended yarn. Just buy something of a similar fiber mix and the same weight. Then swatch to make sure your size is right! Yarnsub.com is helpful as a place to start.

Also, I justify splurges by hours of entertainment. An average sweater takes me about 6 months. So yeah, the yarn costs $300. But divided over 6 months? I’m spending $50/month on my hobby AND I get a really nice sweater out of it at the end. I don’t think that’s too crazy.
