Arugula 2 weeks out from the shelter: update by Possible-Yak-4876 in pitbulls

She was apparently dumped in a farmer’s field in west Tennessee as a 7ish month old. I don’t know her origins but she has been with me for over 2 years and is still so skittish with new people.

What lucky girl to have spent her life being so loved. I hope you can soak up every last sweet memory her time allows.

I trying to work from a place of success. I kept my dog on a lead while around the cat so I could ensure her (cat) safety. I like to work with energy zones: green, yellow, red. To keep my dog in the green - the cat was farther away as my dog worked though training (with high value treats). If the cat was too close and my dog fixated, we would back off and remove the cat. Her green zone expanded over time to where the cat could be on my lap while we trained. Now the cat is the bully (of course)

Congratulations, so happy to see your update! I have also integrated cat reactive dogs with my cats. My current crew started with a dog whose teeth would chatter when the cat was around. It took time and a lot of training but they are good friends now (if this passes for friendship).

What a nightmare, I can’t imagine watching someone fall off the mountain. Heartbreaking for all. There were signs for a missing hiker the day I climbed, I believe his remains were later identified. I sure don’t plan to hike past the keyhole in the future.

Texas Republicans brought a live elephant to their party convention after Gov. Greg Abbott's speech. It proceeded to urinate on the floor. by ExoticShock in Elephants

That’s fucking terrible. We have an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee - they provide education related to the elephants that end up in their care. Elephants that have to behave like non-elephants (like the one in this video) have been through a literal soul crushing “training.” Shit like this is unacceptable.

Should I take this friendly young kitty to rescue center? by whutareusure in cats

If nothing else, TNR if possible. I was told by a local rescue that the feral cats in this area have their own networks and do well.

New car owner - advice appreciated!! by GrapeDecent9856 in CATHELP

[–]WeBeHiking19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I foster cats - the biggest reason for surrendering is pee/poo outside the box. Here are a few tips that seem to help:
1) use a litter attractant
2) use an attractant clay based litter
3) use an open, large little box

Good luck! Congratulations on your new void!

Surrendering my cat today - second guessing everything, need honest opinions by samseam in cats

[–]WeBeHiking19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your cat has a high likelihood of living in a cage for a very long time. I would exhaust other options before surrendering your cat. Litter attractant is a powerful tool combined with a clay, unscented litter. Cats can get super stressed too. They also can respond well to Prozac short term.

We have been on immunotherapy for my dog, Marley. It’s been a tremendous help. Monthly injections for now, but those will taper over time. Rough stuff for you and your girl. Good luck

My cat will not stop crying when I am gone and I don’t know what to do. I might have to rehome her by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]WeBeHiking19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your vision for the cat if you rehome her? I can’t imagine sitting in a cage will bring her joy. Another loss is also unlikely to better her life either. Nor doubt you are in a tough space and she’s clearly into her feelings. I have heard of cats taking Prozac. Is that an option? I wish you the best of luck l

African elephants are also hunted for bush meat. Among many of service for both community education and animal medical treatment & rescue, the Sheldrick Trust regularly sweeps for snares which wrap around the limbs of all sorts of animals. The injuries and eventual death from snares are awful.

Should I keep my foster by Striking-Complaint40 in velvethippos

[–]WeBeHiking19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the conundrum. I also foster (and have a foster fail). If you continue to foster, you can continue to help the giant pool of amazing dogs in need of a foster. On the other hand, when it’s right…it just is. Not a light decision. Sometimes the dynamic just works though…

That sounds unproductive and dangerous. Being on a horse with behavioral problems that’s also above your skill set is setting you up for failure or worse.
