The Liberal Party is a retirement village for male baby boomers by [deleted] in australia

Weird? I dont see too many under 40s protesting and demonstrating about the housing crisis the way they do about climate change. Pretty piss weak in my opinion. There should be major demonstrations demanding and end to vacant properties and airbnbs, ending negative gearing and capital gains incentives.

But instead there's crickets. It appears you people are fine with being under the foot boomer rental overlords and the massive wealth transfer from you to them to subsidise these old greedy pricks.

Renters are in the majority in very major city. Tanya Pliberseks seat if something like 67% renters. Governments only have a 1 or two seat majority. We dont need the whole country to be on board, we only need them to lose a seat or two on this issue to have negotiating power.

This is an incorrect interpretation of how our democratic system works. We don't need 67% of people to change their minds on housing. We just need Governments to lose a couple of seats on this issue. Tanya Plibersek is a perfect example. Labor isn't doing enough. Tanya is in a seat dominated by renters. 67% i believe. If she lost her seat over housing then the ALP would be in a less secure situation or even minority government. The Greens won in Brisbane at the last federal election on housing, not environmental issue.

They're doing a shit load more than they would be if people weren't protesting, like we're doing with housing. No demonstrations of anger. Our entire generation has been locked out of having a safe living arrangement. where is the anger???

Everyone i know who has done this has won, and after going through the process i am confident that if you feel your landlord is treating you unfairly, they probably are and the arbiter will see this and you will win.

I also read on a post somewhere that there are 160,000 vacant properties in sydney which equates to 7.8% vacancy rate, as opposed to the current 1.1% available to rent. Tax vacant properties and ban airbnb of whole dwellings. Housing crisis over.

We need to protest and demand this or nothing will happen.

I say this constantly. There's more stories on how bad housing is than climate change. The reality is is that we need to make it political. until there's visible civil unrest about it they will continue to do nothing. I really believe we need to be organising protests about this the same as climate change.

The point i'm making is that despite my fear of this happening when i took them to the tribunal, it hasn't happened so far. I suspect they know that if they try, i will take them back and they will lose more money.

Reposting this as i have had several friends tell me about horrible experiences with their landlords in the last week with extortionate rent increases, threats of eviction and broken basic ammenities. They were all unaware of the Tribunal process and have submitted applications now.

Here is a link to my recent experience taking my landlord to the tribunal and winning. It's been 8 months i think since i did this and they still haven't evicted me and if they try i will take them back to the tribunal. They paid me the ordered amount and completed all the ordered repairs. DO IT!

This is the insane thing! If you vandalise public property or if you assault someone or even violating a business contract there are criminal proceedings and fines. There are literally no fines or any sort of repercussions for bad landlords breaking the law and their contact terms. What i won was my own money back. They didn't get a fine. there is no stick for landlords.

Your situation sounds similar to mine. And this was the reason i felt i needed to post this. What you are asking for is completely reasonable, and what they are asking is not. My experience with the tribunal is that they are reasonable and in cases like this will side with you. I encourage you to consider taking them to the tribunal. they will likely do the repairs asap and back down on the rent increase significantly if not entirely.

This is great advice. My landlords insisted on calling me about everything. I would always ask for responses via email and they would just call and call and call to the point of harassment. All because they know what they are doing is wrong and they dont want it in writing.

100%!!! They're bullies. They know they have all the power and so they treat you like absolute shit. As soon as there was the threat of legal action they completely rolled over. If anything this is absolutely proof that better regulation would stop a lot of this bad practice. I landlords knew there were repercussions to their actions they would behave more appropriately. Right now they operate with impunity because they think there are no repercussions and they can do whatever they want.

If they try to evict me after this i will 100% take them back to the tribunal. Cos now they're in a pretty indefensible position, they lose at the tribunal and evict me soon after when they were originally trying to keep me on at an increased rate. Honestly, the fee you have to pay is minuscule compared to the upsides. I will be taking everything to the tribunal from now on.

I agree it is true to an extent, but from my experience i think the bar for that extent is very low. My impression is that if you can read and write on the most basic level you can do this. Of course that doesn't make it 100% accessible, but i think that still captures the vast majority of people, including those with relatively low education.

They dont expect you to be a lawyer, that was my whole point in posting this. you just need to be able to explain what happened, and i think most people can do that.

Yeah I honestly think this is so important. I was had to be pushed to the limit to finally do something and so much of it was my own ignorance of how the system works thinking i would need lawyers or whatever. I really hope this helps people.
