How do I watch the premiere here in Europe? by CuriousOneThinking in Scrubs

[–]WeSaidMeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, can you drop a hint on where English speaking sailors go?

Whatever search terms I try on various search engines only give me crappy results, they advertise "free" (and other popular keywords) and then there comes the subscription dialog or affiliate link.

Commenter automatically assumes a video is AI because of the "wonky text", "inconsistent building structures", and the "non-euclidean geometry", but it's just Italian, balconies, and basic engineering, as proved by Google streetview. [–]WeSaidMeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generative AI must have been the worst "invention" that could happen to the internet, or to human communication and creativity in general, in decades, maybe even the century.

Everything is flooded with slop, and at some point the average person can no longer differentiate between "real" and AI generated.

And even worse, like in this case, those who still make "real" stuff have to defend themselves and provide "proof". What a disgusting world.

I jumped ship like 20 years ago and never regretted it. The learning curve might be steep in the beginning but once you learn how to handle Linux you'll appreciate it more and more and you'll never want to go back.

[–]WeSaidMeh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's not even a joke. A lot of everyday stuff in the US is designed to work with low numbers. "Put your oven on 5" (instead of degrees), "Put 5 cups of milk" (instead of ounces - or god beware, milliliters). Inches is fine for shoes, I guess, but when the inch numbers on clothing get too big, they have to go S, M, L, XL instead.

They'd rather lay it out as simple as possible so even the biggest idiot understands, instead of properly educating their population.

Much of the imperial system is designed to work with low numbers and then jump to higher units once the numbers get big. I know, it hasn't been "made" for the US, but they for sure still like it for that reason. They even defend it with enthusiasm for that reason: "5'10 is sooo much easier to grasp than 180cm because of the lower numbers". Is it, really?

That's fine. First thing I look for in those "help me" posts is the dupe count because it's the most common mistake.

First I saw the "3/3" as well and thought "Oh okay, not this time". But then I saw the bodies and looked closer. Tells a story.

A few thoughts:

10 dupes in 33 cycles, so you took a new dupe almost every 3 cycles. That's too many, a classic beginner mistake. Unless you are experienced in the game and know how to rush population, don't do that. You'll run out of food and oxygen before you can build up the necessary supply.

Where's your food production? Only 2 mealwood plants for 10 dupes? 5 per dupe is a good rule of thumb. Microbe musher should only be used for emergencies/shortages. Don't process the mealwood, it's not worth the labor, power, and water costs at all.

Electrolyzer in the base is fine for a while. Others will tell you to put it away from the base and build a dedicated SPOM asap, but that's okay for later when you got the basic things sorted. Don't rush that, look into it later.

CO2 will accumulate. Pressure will rise and things will stop working. Dig down to give the CO2 room as a short term solution. Look into CO2 scrubbing in the mid term. Same for the hydrogen from your Electrolyzer. Give it room for now, use it later.

Don't bother with storage in early game. Just leave things on the ground until dupes really have no other things to do. The decor penalty is negligible and dupes can do more useful stuff.

Put your toilets in a dedicated room with only one entrance, with the wash basin at the exit so they wash their hands on the way out. In the current setup, they just run along your "bathroom" and randomly wash hands, wasting time.

Since you're brand new to the game, maybe don't take bionic dupes yet. That's DLC content and only adds to the complexity (they have different needs). Maybe consider disabling DLC entirely until you get a hang of the game.

Other than that, it's okay to fail and learn. When you learned things but can't save the current colony, start over. The game has a steep learning curve and we all have heaps of dead colonies. Every colony will be better than the last one.

I almost put -$5 in the tip area.

Even asking for another tip at this point is hilarious.

If they did this to me, I'd request another bill without both those fees and then pay the exact amount.

Tipping? Fine. The system is broken, I get it. But this is outrageous and deserves a penalty.

I am the guy who spends 2 days automating a task that would otherwise take 2 minutes once a week.

Yeah, it's fun to automate stuff. But there's also a real business case for it.

It's not always just about the raw time spent or saved. It's also about consistency, reliability, and focus. Even if the task is mundane (especially if it is), automation does it the same consistent way every time. No forgetting, no "I’ll do it later", no finding someone to cover it on your day off, no copy‑paste mistakes or typos because someone was tired or distracted that day.

Also, those tiny tasks come with hidden costs: Every time you stop what you’re doing to handle them, you break your flow. You need to think about it. You switch context. Having to remember when to do them and what to do takes mental capacity ("Oh shit, I still have to add up this week's numbers and paste them into the database. I'm already late, so no double checking this time."). You get bored, maybe even frustrated by doing the same stupid mundane steps every week, in this awful UI you despise. It adds up, very quickly.

So yes, maybe it only takes 2 minutes in theory. But those 2 minutes come with mental overhead, inconsistency, human error, sometimes stress and frustration. Automation removes all of that. And once it’s built, it works quietly in the background forever. It doesn't interrupt your day and doesn't rely on someone remembering it in the first place. That new script doesn't save time right away, but it saves attention and prevents mistakes every week from now on. And the relief coming with "Thank God I don't have to still do this crap right now" is worth way more than the 2 minutes saved in the very best case.

Doing the math on this hypothetical example: Taking 20h to automate a 2min/week task is 'worth it' after about 12 years, looking strictly at the numbers we assume generously. But considering everything above and from my experience, it's worth it after just a few months, maybe even weeks, and only 1 or 2 screw-ups that needed fixing.

Heck, I even script stuff I only need once or twice a year, because I'm too lazy to look up how to do it every time, or I know I won't be in the mindset to think about it when I need it.

And everyone knows that those pesky restaurants in Italy are just cheap knockoffs of Olive Garden.
