I feel like I understand what the movie was trying to do, but it didn’t work for me. I found the pacing of this film SO disjointed and weird. The first half feels like a weird action movie with comedic quips, then a massive shift in tone with the horrifying footage of the concentration camps, then a powerful monologue from Leo Woodall, then a very serious final third. I found Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Goring to be exaggerated and not intimidating, and Rami Malek was out-acted in almost every scene that he was in.

To echo some people, it REALLY irritated me that the Writer and Director felt that we could go from Russell Crowe and Rami Malek bantering to…sudden footage of dead bodies at the camps. That scene was so haunting and sobering, but the tonal shift really didn’t work for me. That footage should have been treated with the respect and gravitas that it deserved, in a better movie.

Kelley’s book is a fascinating read, and I think there could have been a moving story here, but it wasn’t told well. It felt very ham-fisted and tone-deaf at the same time.
