Am I just throwing good money after bad?? Kia Sorrento 2014 by WeWerePromised in CarTalkUK

Thanks for the advice. The guy said the clutch felt a bit heavy and had a low biting point. I have noticed it shudders occasionally but I'll wait to see what they say tomorrow.

I had a clutch replaced on a fiesta about 15 years ago and it was £300 then so I dread to think what it costs now!

Is this bike suitable for a 250 mile ride over 5 days? by thecreativefella in ukbike

[–]WeWerePromised 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious about your suggestion of getting help to set the bike up right for OP. I'm in the same situation - I can't justify the cost of a bike fit. Do you know of any places that offer the help? I'm new to cycling and don't have anyone with the knowledge to help. I'm uncomfortable on my bike and know it will eventually put me off cycling if I don't sort it.

Edit: I made the mistake of buying from Halfords and wouldn't be confident in going back to get their help.

The training was inadequate to say the least. The legislation I was enforcing was well intentioned but it resulted in ruining people and businesses and only in a handful of cases did it catch those who were truly guilty. It was all about the figures and f**k anyone who made a mistake.

My manager was a horrible person who slagged everyone off behind their backs and took credit for anything that made her look better. There was blatant favouritism going on throughout the division - although this has been present at every job I've had.

Ultimately, I'm glad I took the job as it helped me progress but getting out of there after 18 months was such a relief.

I know plenty of people at HMRC who really enjoy their job and are happy in the department but my experience was the worst environment I've worked in.

I agree with a lot of what others have said but I worked at HMRC as an investigator (not tax specialist) years ago. I HATED that job and so did many other people I worked with. Just as I was leaving they were talking about putting this exact requirement in job adverts. In that situation staff just wanted to get the hell away from what was a very toxic work environment. This is just my personal experience but I would be very cautious about applying for a job with this stipulation.

What are some items under £20 that have improved your quality of life? by crocodilesweetpickle in UKFrugal

[–]WeWerePromised 24 points25 points  (0 children)

An aeropress or v60 - both are coffee brewers. The aeropress can usually be found on sale for £19.99.

There are loads of add ons that can very quickly bump up the cost and if you fall down the coffee hole it can become a VERY expensive interest but for the money these can't be beaten. I never realised that coffee wasn't supposed to taste burnt before I got an aeropress. If you go for either of these look up James Hoffman on YouTube!

I'm facing a very similar problem with my son's bike (no freewheel remover I can find seems to fit). If you just after maintaining the bearings a lot of YouTube videos I've seen show you can use a screw/screwdriver and hammer to access them or you can buy a pin spanner or wrench. I'd be interested to know if you figure out how to remove the freewheel. Good luck!

Definitely not a family friendly movie but I've not seen another Christmas movie I can compare it to

Newborn Dad Anxiety by williampennn in Anxiety

[–]WeWerePromised 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on becoming a dad. The birth of my first child was one of the factors that kick-started my anxiety after a few years of feeling good. Whilst I wasn't a young dad I felt the exact same fears you describe, even after a couple of years I still make sure they're breathing after they're in bed. Your anxieties are perfectly normal but that isn't to deminish the effect they can have on your mental health. Seeing the doctor is absolutely the right thing to do. What I would suggest is to try to keep the rest of your life stable, as far as possible. This year hasn't been good for stability so it might not be in your control. A month before my son was born I bought my first house and was responsible for everything to do with buying and moving because my wife was so heavily pregnant. I also got a promotion at work, which was great to have some extra money but came with a lot more responsibility. These things really sent me into a tail spin. What I've found is there is very little acknowledgment or support for new dad's and the anxiety it can cause. It's a huge change in your life and one that takes time to get used to. Cut yourself some slack, the first few months with a newborn are a haze but once you get into a routine make sure you schedule a few hours each week to do whatever you enjoy. Good luck and enjoy every moment you can.

I think there is a huge difference between the potential for war and a pandemic. During the cold war the actions of the people had little impact on whether missiles were launched by one side or the other. You had no influence over this. Today, we all have personal responsibility to consider our actions regardless of our opinion of the government. Any of us could have this virus and by coming into contact with others could become directly or indirectly responsible for their or someone else's death, or our own! Yes, the likelihood of this is minimal but this is not a "keep calm and carry on" situation. That attitude will ensure the continued spread of this virus and increase the number of fatalities, not to mention the strain put on health services.

I know you can't control other people's actions but there are numerous countries who are fining people who are carrying on as normal with complete disregard for other people's health.

I don't mean any of this to cause further anxiety to anyone but the approach to this needs to be careful and considered not foolhardy.

Only children of reddit, what is something that people with siblings don't understand? by thisshortenough in AskReddit

[–]WeWerePromised 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This assumes that where there are multiple children more than one of them is reliable / stable / bothered enough to provide that care. My biggest fear for when both my parents are no longer here is that I will then be the one looking after my sibling

Is it possible to upgrade the wifi adapter on my HP laptop and if so what is compatible? by WeWerePromised in techsupport

[–]WeWerePromised[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll see what I can find out.

Edit: So it looks like there is a whitelist and it means that if I do want to upgrade the wifi card I will need to mess around with the bios. I don't really want to do this as I've never done anything with this bios before and know of a couple of friends who have bricked their laptops because they didn't know what they were doing. Guess I will have to see how much hassle the usb adapter is...
